I can absolutely recommend following a @MicarahTewers tutorial. Except I didn't really follow much of it BUT it's the thought that counts, right? ..... right??????

The Peacock Dress is Problematic || don't make it
มุมมอง 111K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Cathy Hay is remaking the peacock dress. Cathy Hay is a white British woman who is remaking the Peacock Dress so she can wear it, in her size. This is why she should stop. I only speak for those who are uncomfortable with or hurt by the recreation of this dress. I do not claim to speak for all POC. It is easier to speak in generalizations in a "snappy" video, but I'm not claiming other voices. ...

beautiful ❤
There's so much vitriol and hatred in this video, she's just making a recreating a dress cause it's pretty, there's no hidden agenda or deeper meaning, there are worse things out there that POC can focus their eyes on instead of "white british woman" making a recreation of a historical dress, the dress didn't hurt your ancestors or the poc, it was the person itself.
Your one brain cell is problematic, people like you should keep quiet.
Getting mad over nothing, you must be proud of yourselves. A part of history could have been reproduced and now will be forgotten, good job!
I'm an immigrant, I left my country less than a year ago, and I don't feel as entitled anymore to speak on behalf of my country men, because right now I'm living a comfortable life and no longer suffering as they are. Your parents left India for the USA, you've lived all of your life in the USA, enjoying all the benefits of a first world country (as I'm sure your parents wanted) and still managed to appropriate the pain of hindu embroiders from 1902. You might be genetically from India but I doubt you can claim to be culturally Indian. The way you speak, your surroundings (those books) tell me you're more a US citizen of olive skin than an Indian woman as you claim to be. The fact of you living in the US means you are profiting from colonialism just like everybody else. Don't bully people at the same time you're trying to pass for a victim. Get off your high horse lady, there are people in actual pain and suffering in your parent's country right now, and I'd like to know what are you doing about it.
I wish you'd spoken more about why the dress is problematic and the history of it and Indian embroiderers, I think this video is perfectly apt but I don't feel that I took a whole lot away from it
Cultural appropriation. You're hurting Italians!
This is bullying that ended up costing Indian women good opportunities to get paid make a stunning piece of art, that could have led to them being hired for haute couture. She was remaking it by using Indian labor, not Chinese sweat-shops. Are you proud of yourself? I'm so sorry for Cathy she had to deal with this self-righteous garbage but more sorry for the women in India who really lost an opportunity. Dior and Chanel reach out more and more to hire women in developing countries, like Morocco, paying them very well and making their goods world famous. The same should happen to India. The peacock dress is stunning. I hope someone remakes it.
Now I really want to see this dress. It has to be the definition of snatched to be this controversial over a century after it's debut. By the way your entire argument is lost on the face your sweater looks oddly like it was made in a sweatshop.
hmmm... there are good points in this video, and I think your criticism of Cathy isn't totally misaimed. On the other hand... all historical garments are problematic. Not equally problematic, of course, but all of them are in fact problematic. As has been pointed out before, the demand for cotton muslin created by the chemise á la reine literally caused the resurgence of slavery in the US. Should we go cancel every cottagecore youtuber? I don't know that not remaking the garments is the right way to deal with the fact that they are problematic, if that makes sense. What something meant in the past doesn't have to determine what it means in the present, although past meanings obviously inform present ones. If the robe de style can be remade from a colonialist example of cultural appropriation (it derives from Tang dynasty court dress) into a statement about body image and sexual objectification then someone could redefine the Peacock dress. Though I would not argue that's what Cathy is doing, since you very astutely pointed out that she's outsourcing the most difficult part. It's a little uncomfortable that she seems to be engaging in a form of modern imperialism unintentionally, rather than really grapple with her disability and the legacy of the garment. As a person with disabilities, I don't love the "you can do your dream thing!" narrative because like... no, if I don't have clout or talented friends (I'd argue that this is more "I can make my dream dress because I'm a youtuber" the amount of money she's spending isn't totally inaccessible but not just anyone can call up a workshop in India and get some cloth custom embroidered even if they are rich), I cannot just work harder to make my dream thing. I'd rather see someone actually grapple with not being able to do something. I don't like that you made a somewhat ableist criticism of what she was doing, instead of really talking about the disability issue. It is not fair to say Indians living in India don't experience racism. That's also a problematic attitude. I talk to people in Asia on a daily basis. The racism they experience is obviously different: less of the direct vitriol perhaps, and more systemic pressure. That doesn't necessarily make it less painful. The Indian people on Cathy's video were not naively thanking her for making "something from our country", they had good reasons for wanting the dress recreated. Not because they didn't feel how problematic it was, but because they were hoping she could do something good with it's legacy. I don't think she lived up to that, but since I did read their comments I felt like I needed to say what I saw. It might help you grapple with your own pain, to talk to some people living in Asia about the legacy of colonialism there. When you're still dealing with a lot of bullying, anyone who isn't as angry as you are can seem like the enemy: but this is ultimately self-sabotaging. You need to be in community with Indians in India, for your own benefit. They can help you deal with the situation you find yourself in, and you can help them with their struggles. Don't confuse a lack of passion for a lack of empathy. I am saying this because I understand what it's like to carry anger like what you demonstrated here. It is exhausting. I can see why you are carrying it, but I also understand it will help you if you can find a way to rise above it. I know that isn't always easy, particularly in the face of ongoing bullying. It's not something you can do alone, so it's important not to push the people who could most help you away. I am not saying don't stand up to bullies or don't be angry, I'm saying don't let the bastards get you down.
I actually learned a lot more about what happened then I had known before because she decided to remake that dress. I wanted to know more about things and to better understand them. I think alot of ppl also want understand how these things were really created then too.
Disagree I think it can be recreated and at the same time whilst it's being recreated, to honour those who made the dress and to reveal the atrocious history behind it. The dress should not have been made under those circumstances, but you know, you can't turn back time. What you can do is talk about it, how it was made and honour the people who did. Too much social justice warrior flavour in the protest re making the dress,
Thanks for this video.
So she worked on the dress...if you can call it worked for over a decade and researched it and was obsessed with it and considers herself intelligent AND yet she still didn't know that it was problematic? LOL. Come on.
What a bunch of bulls*it.
I love your modifications. I'm going to try to do the same thing, but I've only got one saree and I don't want to chop it up, so mine's going to be boring cotton.
Free them! I loved learning about this. I hope you get around to making more videos on the topic!
starting and then abandoning a Micarah tewtorial is what we call understanding the assignment on a spiritual level
"bold of you to think I'd fix something that's already done" WORD. Forgot to say: it's gorgeous! Love the color on you, and no one would know it was done in a day, if you hadn't spilled the beans to the whole internet.
10/10 homeschoolers! No notes!
God you're insufferable. You should be ashamed of yourself.
I just came across your channel and adore this dress!
micarah nami collab was not on my bingo card but i love this!!! also hi danny!!!!
This is absolutely lovely! Love the fabric choices, especially. ❤
Using the embroidery section for the bodice was a great idea. It looks really good and is a very smart use of fabric.
I also love those wrong sceletons. My favorit is the octupus. Just becouse that one piss so many people off 😂
That pink is so cute!
So airy and lovely! 💖Also, I love the rich color of your robe. 💜 I too live at the intersection of "loves nice clothes" and "ugh, don't wanna wear real clothes". My solution is wearing wide & long lengths of hemmed, opaque, shot silk as dresses which I tie sarong-like and can then tuck in the corners if modesty matters that day. All the joy of silk on my skin and minimal effort!
Was that Dan Banners apartment in the reveal?
🤔This used to be Bernadette Banner's apartment, judging by her video before moving to England
Haha yep it is!
This looks so very lovely.
Gosh, do any artist actually follow directions? Instructions are too hard to follow! lol
That’s probably the biggest difference between artists and crafters
I have also discovered the Regency secret by following Micarah's tutorial! 🎉 Yours turned out so floaty and pretty
Thanks so much!! I definitely think the fabric choice helped me hide many sins lol
lol you did what I do in all my project. Start out with a plan and then get derailed! Go you!
Over plan only to disregard said plan within five minutes is my mode of work XD
You are an envious bully who will never create anything as remotely beautiful as Cathy was trying to do, simply pathetic.
Glad she ignored you if you had even crossed her radar. Listening to people like this hurts my head. This is what the education system is creating. If someone recreating a dress because they think it's beautiful harms anyone, then they must be the most delicate petals on the planet. You can't rewrite history and you shouldn't even try. FAKE history is a thing, however. If you're going to have a rant, be my guest and have a rant about that. You introduced her as a "white British woman". What does her colour have to do with anything? Are you racist, by any chance, or is it only white people who can be racist? I'm surprised you didn't weave in the other defining characteristic she has, but I guess that's "approved" these days (or you thought you'd be pilloried if you did). You clearly didn't mean it as purely descriptive, did you? It was very definitely meant as a slur. Only the fact that she is creating something has allowed you to have this juvenile rant (and possibly make a little cash, albeit that far fewer people want to see what you're doing as opposed to what Cathy Hay's doing, so it must be very little cash), so it would be wise, given the lack of interest, to stop snivelling. We have all, at some point, been the underdogs. I don't go around whinging about "cultural appropriation" when non-Scots wear kilts, even if they're English. I hope when you grow up a bit, if you haven't already figured out in the last two years that there are more important things going on in the world, that you watch this back and realise how bratty you sound.
Fantastic work Nami! I'm very impressed!
Oh, and did I mention.....STUNNING
Stunning stunning stunning stunning
I just made a fitted waistcoaty thing and chucked a zip in instead of lacing - it works fab!
What an achievement!
This video is embarrassing, no wonder nobody can take Muricans seriously.
This swedish person is baffled by the level of detail other cultures put into deciding what is 'work appropriate' clothing. Fun and strange 😊
I was just thinking could alter her design to a phoenix or a special design to the embroiderers for the Edwardian gown of her dreams
Are those FFXIV Dancer weapons hanging on the wall behind you?!
Good eye, yes they are!! ^_^ I made an ffxiv dancer back in … gosh 2019?? Ish???
@@NamiSparrow Haha! Awesome!
I've gotten blood on my projects often enough that I consider it a signature.
Thankfully you only have 4k followers. Your navel gazing is remarkable.
I'm speechless. With such attitude and logic presented in this video we should abandon art and architecture restoration and burry all of the artefacts shown in museums and art galleries. All of the most precious things in this whole wide world were and are created by exploitation, blood, tears and injustice. Lady, before you start to throw stones take a deep look at yourself. At your mobile phone, at your camera, at your furniture and end every other object. Can you testify for moral and ethical sourcing of every part that make those things? Did Cathy herself took the advantage of anyone to create this dress? This was educational pice. Not a vanity project. It was to tell stories of people and arts. People like you are truly disgusting. You think you are changing the world, but you do more harm than good.
Love your videos!! Did you try anything to get the sharpie out? I would have gravitated to rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, but I have no idea if either would work or just wreck the fabric.
I LOVE the material! And kudos to sticking with the pleats - I would have ripped my hair out! LOL!
Great dress and great commentary!!
