With the new Apple M3 chips released, is the M2 Macbook Air a capable video editing laptop? The Macbook Air didn't get the M3 upgrade yet and so in this video, we're going to go over how the M2 Macbook Air performs when editing 4K videos. The M3 is just a slight upgrade over the M2, maybe saving the extra few hundred bucks with the Macbook Air can get the job done. I'm comparing the M2 Macbook ...

Is M3 Chip with 16 RAM, 256 Memory is enough for Coding, video editing? Videos with 4K, 5.3K resolution 2-3 minutes video duration for reels and youtube?
Yes it's enough...not sure about 5.3k resolution footage but you can do basic editing with 4K footage fine.
1- Is MacBook Air M2 powerful enough to handle little heavy editing on premier pro? Like multiple clips and texts and graphics 2- 8/512GB Vs 16/256GB?
16gb with 256gb storage. Always opt for more ram than storage because at least with storage you can use external. not sure what you mean with heavier editing. But if you mean graphic intensive tasks like After Effects, or even something like denoising your footage, you'll want something more powerful. Even M Pro series like M2 Pro wouldn't be as powerful for graphic intensive. You'll want something more along the lines of the Max or Ultra series.
Damn you went ham in 2024 💪 can't wait to see the content you're about to pump out in 2025 🔥
@BillyVisuals thanks man! Lets crush 2025 🙌🏻
does touch screen on rs3 mini makes any difference compared to rsc?
Makes a big difference because you can now make settings and adjustments on the gimbal without the app on your phone. It'll also tell you if there's stress on any motor indicating your camera isn't balanced correctly.
@@mattchungz thanks dude this makes my purchase easy, thanks a ton I was so confused
Could I edit a 15 minute 4k TH-cam video on it?
Yes for basic editing...for any graphic intensive things, probably not.
Man I have the Dji RSC2 combo edition in perfect condition and wanting to sell it on online platform but nobody even wanna buy them at all. I am in Singapore, it seems like nobody wanna use gimbal here. It's weird.
Yeah selling a gimbal is tough because the price for a brand new is not bad and there are so many different models. I'd recommend to keep it as a backup gimbal
dont tell me your promoting crap huusk knives?
ha no I am not. I had to do content for a marketer.
@@mattchungz I got scammed by them had to threaten paypal to get my money back.
Sorry to hear that, definitely have to be careful with where you're purchasing online these days. Hope you got it all sorted though
considering getting my first mac (got into the apple ecosystem last month and loving it hence the choice). Primary use case would be amateur video editing using the da vinci resolve, stuck between 13" M3 air (16gigs, 512 gigs) or the base 14" M4 Macbook pro (16/512). which one would you recommend? new subscriber here btw very concise vids
Thanks for the sub! If you have the budget for the M4 MBP then would 100% go for that over the M3 Air with the same memory and storage. You're getting a better chip, a better screen, better cooling, extra thunderbolt port, and an SD card slot.
The trend of 4k being pushed by high profile TH-cam content creators is ruining the growth of work flow efficiency of beginner content creators on a budget. A lot of people are struggling to edit 4k clips and don’t even really understand pixel density vs camera quality. People need to know that the quality of a shot, and by extension the entire video, is more of a result of the creator’s ingenuity and the camera lenses capabilities rather than the maximum pixel density that the video format will allow. The fact is, most viewers will benefit from content being uploaded at 1080 or even 720p because they probably have sub par WiFi and don’t even have 4k displays. It’s a very very small handful of viewers that actually go through the trouble to watch TH-cam videos in actual 4k resolution. A solid camera can make a shot look amazing even if viewed at a lower resolution. And a shitty camera will still look like shit when recording in 4k, which means your storage is going to max faster and your videos will still look terrible, and editing them will be a nightmare . Shelling out thousands of dollars for a laptop won’t change the quality of your shots if your camera lens is of subpar quality, and I recommend that those on a budget use their money to get a decent camera or even a new phone with a good camera, and as long as you shoot in 1080p 30fps, any computer past 2015 should render your clips together just fine. If you get an iPhone, you can download iMovie for free and you get the entire package. A solid camera that looks good and shoots up to 4k, and software to render your clips together. Even the 4k ones. all in your pocket.
Great points and very true, you're not wrong. However, it also depends. For people who are doing photo/video for as a hobby, yes I think going with the basics to even start to understand the art is more important than blowing money just because you're spec hungry. I run my own video business full time so I'm doing professional videos for clients. There are so many factors and variables involved when it comes to all the equipment and gear you're using. If you're doing it for art and as a hobby, it's all subjective. You can use an old film camera that costs pennies and create some amazing content. Yes you can absolutely shoot some amazing videos and edit them with just an iPhone. Apple's press releases are all shot on iPhone now to market the phone's camera capabilities. But in a professional setting, these decisions are intentional for very specific reasons. For a TH-cam channel, you can absolutely get by with an iPhone. Now when it comes to 4k, there are many reasons why people would shoot in 4k, not just for resolution. A big reason why I shoot in 4K is because of the higher bitrate. Of course, being a higher resolution that there is more data and therefore a higher bitrate than 1080. Although the difference is minor especially on a small screen, maybe not even noticeable, definitely by the average person, I can still tell the difference. And if I can tell the difference, then that's all that matters to me because I have a level of standard and quality for my branding overall. I recently hired a shooter to cover for me and once I started editing the footage, immediately I knew the resolution was off where he shot in 1080. Although minor and probably not noticeable to most people, the difference is there. Resolution doesn't dictate the quality of the video, bitrate plays a large role. Throw a 4k video shot on an iPhone onto a big screen TV vs a video shot on a Sony FX3. And when you have that type of camera, you need a computer that can handle editing that type of footage. My video is just that. I'm not reviewing and pushing people to get a full spec'd M4 Max MacBook Pro to edit their TH-cam videos. I'm proving that their entry level laptop can handle editing top tier content. So spend less and do more. The high profile creators will always use the best and top of the line. If they're at the top, they're reviewing the top spec'd equipment and therefore need to be using top spec'd stuff. Maybe they're inspiring the beginners that one day they can get to that level. But above all, for a TH-cam video/channel, before even considering resolution and camera, audio and content are higher on the list.
@ totally agree man. Obviously commercial video production studios should always strive for the best equipment to get the best results. Two totally different demographics of course. I’m definitely referring more to home TH-camrs on a budget, Myself included haha. I’m still learning a lot myself.
@ I also think it is undeniable at this point that high profile TH-camrs are paid and sponsored by manufacturers to push content that low key convinces viewers that their hardware is antiquated and that they should upgrade. 4k is definitely a tool/talking point to achieve this. I would hardly call it inspirational. It’s channels like yours that I appreciate for showing real time usage and capabilities of these devices for people like me who just want to get better at creating solid content without breaking the bank. Honestly the m3 MacBook Air on Amazon for $844 on Black Friday is looking like a pretty good deal for anyone on a mid range budget.
Sleep mode is better or shutdown for longevity I am new Mac user
I don't think I ever shut down...maybe only restart from time to time but mostly sleep mode.
Just went with a M3 Air 13 inch, got the 24 GB ram and 512 SSD, I know my friend is using M1 with 16 GB, editing 4k without issues :)
With light editing, you won't have issues! Nice go with the 24gb
Or it can't do 1440p monitors. Scaling looks like shit. It's absolutely crazy.
Indeed to the point video … I have been struggling (4 K vids have become impossible to edit) with my 2014 MacBook Pro i5 although have been able to roll out about 100 videos.. My question is will the M3 Air 16GB be enough for Adobe Premiere Pro or I need to use DVResolve … I am on a budget and would like to see if my work can be done with the MBA … many thanks in advance and I have subbed you bro. ❤ love from Toronto
I have the same question. Should I go for Air M2 16gb for photo editing/light video editing? I am worried about the temperature, will I stress the machine too much? Is 13inch enough for photo editing?
Thanks for the sub! The M3 Air 16g will be enough. My M2 16gb Air has been keeping up with my editing and I run my own video business full time, so I'm doing client work. I've taken it on work trips and edited in flight, hotel, you name it and it's kept up. The editing I do is pretty light work, no fancy transitions or effects. Multi cam setup with even a few audio tracks. Typical testimonials, case studies, etc. So for something like a TH-cam video, it'll handle without problems. I've edited a couple of my YT videos on my Air without issues. Of course if you throw on things like a noise reduction effect, it won't playback but not even my M2 Pro Mac Mini can do it. Think you need the Max or Ultra chips on a Mac Studio or Pro to do that level of heavy lifting. I haven't used Premiere on my Air though as I've switched to DVR but I don't see why there would be any issues if DVR is running smoothly.
Yep it'll be enough for photo and light video editing. I do it with mine and have no issues. Though, my Air is NOT my main editing machine. I only use it to edit on the go but I've never ran into issues with it. It's always kept up with me and my work. I run a video business full time and so I do client work. Taken my Air with me on work trips and edited with no issues. I haven't even felt my machine get warm enough to be worried.
@@mattchungz wow, this was extremely helpful from you!! After hours of reading reviews and watching yt videos, your comment made me buy the 16gb Macbook Air!! Thank you so much!!

does FCP interface similiar woth Premiere ?
Sort of but not really. They function very differently. You should go check out my other video where I compare FCP vs Premiere vs DaVinci Resolve
Just bought a m2 air 16gb for 750 at Best Buy coming from a 2015 MacBook Pro and a m1 iPad Air I am happy
Do you use it for heavy editing?
What a deal. It's a great laptop
Hey matt, i wanted to purchase the APPLE MacBook Air 13'', Chip M2, 8 CPU 8 GPU, 256GB, (2022), midnight for my video editing because I have a TH-cam channel and some of my videos is about 1 hour long while some are 15 minutes long videos . But seeing this review got me more confused.
What made you more confused? Also, opt for minimum 16gb ram if you're video editing.
Yeah the base edit is fast . But what about round tripping ? That’s the problem no program is a one all be all like DR and I’ve used FCP on everything what makes Dr better is you got built in after effects
nice rig over there
Thanks! Outdated so one of these days I'll do an updated setup video soon!
Absolutely amazing setup, I’ll be picking up my M4 Mac Mini tomorrow and I’ll be working on my Review/Desk Setup video over the weekend after getting a bunch of stuff so this is definitely a good inspiration for a setup. Amazing clean setup here
Thanks! This is pretty outdated and I've completely revamped my setup lol. I hope I can find time to do an updated setup video soon. I'm jealous of your new M4 Mini. Please send me the link to your video once it's done!
Will any of these gimbals be able to support the huge ass BMPCC4K perchance? I'm debating getting one that can handle that behemoth but if not I'll probably grab one for use with my sigma fp
Think the BMPCC is 1.5 lbs? In and around the same as something like a FX3. So I don't see why not, especially the RS3. But if you plan to rig it up, go with a Pro. RS3/4 are great for run and gun shoots where you're not rigging up the camera on the gimbal.
The only thing I hate about my new M2 MacBook Air is basically the screen and ram. Only the 8 GB model was on sale :( . Maximum brightness is only 500 nits but MacBook Pro regular brightness is 1000 nits! Also no HDR and no mini LED. I'll will suck it up for 6 months to save my money and get a pro. I want to do video editing sand photo editing for myself as a hobby but on my Air is just not possible.
You're stretched at 8gb of ram, regarding everything else such as screen brightness and all, you're not wrong but also they're not needs. How I know, I run my own video business and do video professionally full time. I've taken my M2 Air on work trips, editing on the plane, in the hotel, you name it. If I can edit professional 4K videos for my corporate clients on this machine, it's more than enough for you to do video and photo editing as a hobby. Would I get the Pro? Absolutely and for all the luxury features you mentioned, but also for more performance. But only if it makes sense for me. If you can save up, go for it, the Pro is 100% better....but you can't say it's not possible on the Air.
I newly purchase a macbook pro m4 pro and use Capcut to export 4k 30 fps video. For a 6 min video , it take 4 to 5 min. Vs your case, 2 min to export 6 min. I wonder why my macbook take that much longer ? software issue?
wtf bro
Could be Capcut...not sure if Capcut is really designed for long videos and on laptop format. It's primarily short form videos mobile first.

Will M2 Air 8GB/256GB be enough to edit 4K/1080 videos on Final Cut Pro?
I would always recommend minimum 16gb
great video
Thanks for stopping by, glad it was helpful
Is MacBook Air M3 8/256gb good enough for video editing on premiere pro?
Depends on what you’re editing and the footage you’re working with. For most cases, it should be enough but with a beefy editing software, I would recommend going minimum 16gb of ram
Why not better sound?
Saving up and researching for my first Macbook. This is definitely helpful! Any video editing software recommendation for beginners that may work perfectly with the M2 chip? Thank you!
Glad it was helpful and hope you get your machine soon. I have a video comparing the big 3 editing softwares, maybe check it out! Thanks for stopping by
You didn’t mention the active tracking through app in sc which is must for solo creators which is not in rs3mini if i am not wrong
Great point. I actually haven’t played around much with the app side of things other than settings and calibration. Thanks for sharing
Excuse my ignorance if this is a silly question, but if your mini had 32gb, would it perhaps run even more smooth?
Not necessarily. More ram just means it’ll run more smoothly if I had more things running in the background. However, more memory will also be helpful if your edit has a ton of different clips. More memory will always be better but there’s a point where it can just be a waste of money. I think 32gb will be more than enough, but can still get by with 16gb
I want to get a MacBook for video editing. Mainly to make content for a business on social media. Also just starting out in the video editing world lol. So would you say MacBook Air 16gb ram & 512 SSD is good?
Yup that should be fine to start out with. I have been creating videos for businesses full time and I’m still using my MacBook Air in this video and it’s holding up fine for me.
The Satechi M2 Hub destroys WiFi performance. Mine went from 250mbps to 25mbps, in the end had to use a network cable and powerline adapters which wasn't the original plan.
Sorry to hear. I haven’t had wifi issues with mine. I’ve been having issues of the hub disconnecting and reconnecting when my Mac is sleeping though. So I’m bombarded with tons of notifications of it not being ejected properly
Thanks for your video! I m looking for budget solution for 4k video editing and colour grading.
Glad it helped! The more modern iPads today with M series chips open up a lot more options now for editing.
3:59 So Final Cut makes decisions instead of you?
Mine has an NVME drive in it. Close to 1 gig read and write.
I’m jealous you have the new version. I’m thinking about updating mine to the NVME version
When A COMPANY takes the route to screw you by selling you products with condemned batteries inside, you have to think twice about buying this paper weight. So don't waste your money on Ronin

Hi Matt! I’m so glad I came across your video. I’ve been looking at the base model MBP but a MBA with upgraded RAM seems to make more sense for my situation. Would you recommend upgrading storage or is working off a SSD a better solution? (I am one of those people who have multiple tabs opened so I’ll be stopping that! 😅) Thanks for being to the point in your videos!
Thanks for stopping by, glad it was helpful. I would always recommend upgrading your ram when purchasing your Mac since you can’t upgrade in the future. Storage, get whatever you can afford after upgrading your ram. Cause yeah you can work off SSDs, which is what I do.
I bought the M2 air yesterday with 8GB/256GB because it was on sale. Would this be sufficient for editing/colorgrading 4k drone videos for social media (less than 15 secs). No plans for longer stuff, just reels. My question is should I just return it and get a pro?
Yeah that should be fine. Short reels that don't need a ton of different clips won't need as much memory. I'd recommend not having anything open when editing though, especially a browser with multiple tabs.
Thank you for the this very informative video. This just confirms my decision to buy Air rather than the Pro but I'll be waiting for the M4
Glad it was helpful!
Finally a review of someone now talking up in their ass about a product. Just to the point and real-world stuff. Thanks great video
Glad it was helpful
All recent reviews of the M3 Macbook Air with at least 16gb say it kicks ass with 4k editing. Its only in the output or batch rendering super high-res photos that is shows appx a 20% decrease in performance compared to the Mackboook Pro
Yeah there isn’t much of a performance gain between the base MBP and MBA. That base MBP is really there offering the chassis otherwise you should be getting the Pro/Ultra/Max chips to justify buying MBP
@@mattchungz im editing in adobe, usually videos that are between 1-5 minutes, in a 1080 x 1920 format, do you think the air is going to perform highly over the long term without any overheating issues? if it becomes my daily driver i do a lot of multitasking, typically 10+ tabs in chrome i don't really like to feel restricted, I want to go with the Air over Pro but the slimness of the Chassis is kind of scaring me as I don't see how it can stay cool
@@DrillHistoryspend the money and get more ram especially if you have multiple tabs open and plan to edit at the same time. Heat hasn’t been an issue with me, the Apple Chips are really efficient

Thanks for stopping by. I have a video where I do 4k editing on my iPad Air 4 with the A14 chip lol
Hi! I'm currently using Sony A6600 with Tamron 17-70mm for mainly shooting music videos. And I'm thinking of getting a used gimbal. Let's say if my budget is around 300, which one would you recommend between Rs2, Rs3 and Rs4? Cuz, I don't want to just go for the cheapest one but then end up not powerful enough, so if that's what it takes, I'm willing to raise my budget. And thank you for the wonderful video! It really helped! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful. If you could bump your budget a bit, I’d go with the RS3. Still a solid gimbal and not far off from the RS4. The RS3 Mini would be a good option if you want to stay within budget, but if you zoom to 70mm on that lens, the Mini could be limited.
@@mattchungz I see. But I have heard although Rs3 comes with more features and easy to use, but on the other side Rs2 are more solid on the hardware. Since Rs2 is using carbon fiber so the payload could be heavier and it's technically a pro series gimbal. Then what would you choose between Rs2 and Rs3? Thank you so much!
I actually haven’t tried the RS2 but there must be a reason the RS2’s design didn’t stick and carry over to the RS3 right? I actually haven’t even seen anyone using an RS2, I’ve mostly seen RS3’s out there being used by other videographers. I also used to think their "improved" algorithm each gen was just a marketing stunt but I definitely noticed the difference in stabilization between the RS3 and the RS4.
Also forgot to mention…the auto locking on the RS3 alone can be the only reason to get it over the RS2. It’s game changing.
@@mattchungz Thank you so much for helping me!!! Because I saw some people say that the upgraded version of the Rs2 is the Rs3 Pro, so I'm worried that if the Rs3 is not part of the Pro series, it might not be strong enough. Thank you for the clarify! Much appreciate.
i have it and love it.... but WHY DAMN Satechi ? why it don't support NVME !
They came out with a new version that supports NVME, for the same price! Also has faster usb ports

This helps a lot, thanks!
Is M3 or M2 capable of editing 5.3k videos for a duration of 2-3 minutes? For reels and youtube?
Is it worth to buy a Ronin Sc used but in very very good condition for 100 euro ?
That’s an excellent deal and yes I’d say it’s worth it. Whether you’re starting off and need a gimbal to get started or if you’re getting it as a backup gimbal to have in case your main craps out on you.
hi, so I cut videos for social media in my job (sometimes also 4k). I would only use the MacBook Air on vacation and on the go. However, you said that as soon as you earn money from cutting, you should go straight to the Pro. Should I still take the pro, even if I only use it in the mentioned scenarios?
If you have the budget to spend for the Pro, yes get it. It has features that’ll make life easier especially when you’re using it for work. The Air is good to get by if your budget is tighter.
What application do you use for editing video in that video?
I use DaVinci Resolve
