How to fix a leaking AC coil drain pan and save $6,000
มุมมอง 134K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This is how you can change the drain pan on a vertical AC coil drain pan without disconnecting any of the coolant piping. Two AC repairmen wanted over $6,000 to replace the AC compressor and that wasn’t even the issue. I discovered a cracked drain pan and decided to figure out how to replace it. I found a couple videos on how to replace it, but nothing without disconnecting the coolant. I hope ...

    Mine is in a tight closet but the vent is next to it. I'll see if I can access it. I glued an area in the front but of course it didn't stop leaking. My total estimate is about 7000. I see no tax so I assume there's another 700 on that. Nope!

    This is important, read this whole thread. I too have been scammed to buy new units, but I found one tech that found the problem with my freezing coils and dripping water. Low R-410A refrigerant. I thought finally found someone I can trust. Well not so fast, last 2 visits seemed suspicious and I paid a few hundred each time. So I decided to get certified and I learned a lot. Like it’s obvious and 1st thing you learn is how to fix a freezing coil. And then the other suspicious things are bs too. In your situation if your using R-22 refrigerant and they believed your coils were freezing and dripping water in unwanted places, then well they don’t have it anymore and try to sell a new outside condenser to give you R-410A. So that makes sense. But they totally missed the obvious because of laziness to get down and dirty and open the indoor air handler to the degree you did. Regardless it looked scary but you succeeded. Playing the devils advocate, if and soon you’re going to need more R-22 then you’ll be back to the same situation unfortunately.

    Its simply amazes me technicians or people would try and take advantage of someone when now days people only get youtube and find the content relating to there issue. At this moment and time my furance is leaking because of the AC coil's not draining off correctly.

    You are lucky that nail holding your coil up didn't bend/break or your coil would have fallen twisting those freon lines and you'd lose it all. Recently a guy estimated he would charge me $2K to do a freon recharge with mandatory leak find/fix. Fortunately before paying for a freon recharge, I checked everything else and the problem was a compressor capacitor failed. Wish I had that space between my furnace and coil you have, cause my metal drip pan has rust all over and I'm trying to treat it chemically so it will last another 5 years. Be a lot safer just to replace it, but without the space between the furnace an coil, I can't get a new one in, if I could even buy one for a 42 yo system.

    So sad. Many dishonest people in the HVAC field, and also shoddy work. Finding a good one is hard because it usually depends on which HVAC employee shows up to do the job. Some are lazy and some are dishonest. Good techs are like cold gold but it's always a gamble. So happy you figured it out yourself and saved tons of money.

    I was wondering what that tray looked like, thanks for posting this.

  • @SeattlePioneer
    @SeattlePioneer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I used a piece of semi flexible plastic that I cut to fit the bottom of the plastic tray. then I glued the plastic reinforcement to the plastic tray. Drilled new holes and reinstalled the bolts to hold the tray and the reinforcement in place. The main weakness of plastic trays is their susceptibility to cracking, so I figure the reinforcement will deter that in the future.

    That's really not how it should be done at all. First you have the incorrect cover panel... get a proper 36in x 96in panel and cut to size. Second, you can either back it up with a plywood/osb panel or make a slight box around 3 inches deep to give it some stability and dimension (i.e. approx. 34.75in tall, by NNin deep by 3in wide). Use trim pieces on the 3in wide sides or cut to thickness of plywood/osb panel if you choose that option. Install 1x3 across the top between the 24in space for the dishwasher so the dishwasher clips have something to tie into. Use corner metal brackets on both ends of the interior of the dishwasher space. This will also stabilize the end panel/box. No seams on the outside, stable frame/support for your dishwasher and countertop.

    • @randomjack1
      @randomjack1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      3 years later and no problems. I think you misunderstood the point here. I wanted the seams to match (not have seamless). Additionally, ikea did not offer a cover panel that size at the time (no clue if they do now). Additionally, the dishwasher attached to the counter just fine with no brackets. I think in a situation you have in your mind your idea works, which is awesome! My goal here is to spark a creative mindset for people to find what works best for their situation. I’m glad you have a solution that works for you, this one has worked excellent for me and I wouldn’t change it.

    Today’s date 01/04/2024. I got 2005 camry. Used a wood handle hammer 13 inches overall length. Removed the rubber cover, foam covering the hole inside. I just inserted the hammer a little force couple of trys, it pot out the trunk. In my situation, I’m in my front house, in the street the ground is not level the car is leaning towards the right side which advantage to me on the length of the hammer.. Thanks a lot Bro 👍🙂🤝🍻.Now I need to get spare keys. Happy and Blessed New Year 🎉🎉🙂🙂

    2 AWG Al is rated for 90 amps on the 75 degree column. Also being that this is a sub panel and doesn't carry the load for the house, this should fail inspection.

  • @Californians_go_home
    @Californians_go_home 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    1/0 aluminum. You have so many different brand breakers in that main panel also. that’s a real rats nest. The SER cable entering the main panel looks to small also for 200 amp . It should be 4-4-4-2

    As an Electrician I highly encourage non licensed electricians to attempt these types of projects. The knowledge of electrical is deep and requires a lot of understanding of electrical theory and Ohms law. The Electrical field requires more calculations than all of the other trades combine. Electrical and HVAC which is 90% electrical is not for D.I.Y just saying.

    Not to discourage as you did a great job, but to say this us built from scratch, is flawed and I personally would change the title. Many people, including myself, probably came to watch your video in hopes of getting inspiration on the actual coupler attachment part; only to realize, you purchased the part, thus, logically speaking, this does not qualify as a DIY from scratch project. So yeah, unless your intentions are to mislead people, please consider changing title. Thumbs down for time being.
