We're The Beginner Drummer Experts
Neil Peart chose me as one of the winners of Modern Drummer's 1st drum solo contest (that's my most "impressive" credential). I've studied with John Riley, Dave DiCenso, Shawn Pelton and others. I've played with Will Lee, Oz Noy, Alison Krauss, Marshall Crenshaw and others.
Why I'm doing this: Drumming has given me so much happiness and joy that I've made it my mission to help as many people as I can learn to play. My hope is that the people who I help will experience that same kind of joy that I have because of this wonderful instrument.

Another Colaiuta (ish) Drum Solo and Fill Drum Chop
This is a follow up the video, "A Colaiuta Inspired Sextuplet Drum Chop." It's a lick that I use often and in this video, I'll demonstrate the idea in a live setting and then I'll break all the details down for you so that you can use it yourself. If you're looking for something different to put into your vocabulary, here you go!
By the way, here is a link to the PDF I mention in the video:

EVER GET STUCK WHEN IT'S TIME TO PLAY A FILL?
Problem: You’re playing a song-perhaps with a band-and when it’s time for you to play a fill, you simply freeze up and don’t know what to play. So, you play some stupid fill that you hate because it’s just something you know.
Solution: Drummers who seem to always have great fills at the ready are not making them up on the spot. They’ve practiced and studied and worked on a set of fills that they know sound great. They’ve put these fills in their toolbox so they can use them anytime.
It’s our flagship and best-selling course.

So, a Six-Stroke Roll and a Linear Drumming Idea Walk into a Bar...
มุมมอง 38121 วันที่ผ่านมา
I know this is a weird title. But, that is kind of what this video is about (minus the bar). There is a way of applying the six-stroke roll that I've gotten incredible mileage out of and there is also a linear idea I came up with that I've also milked for a lot of great drumming stuff. And I want to share all of this with you. These ideas were originally published on my blog as Nasty Drum Licks...
Great Artists Steal (and that includes drummers)

I've been doing this for a long time, and It's a real shortcut. Actually, it's more than just a shortcut. It's a massively powerful way to accelerate your progress on the drums. Artists of all kinds have been using this idea to their advantage for years. In this short video I'll explain the shortcut so you can use it too.

Here's how to twirl your sticks. It's a new way of doing it that I learned by watching the master Glen Sobel. There's a slight trick to this method that allows you to use the twirl in your playing more easily than the way I was doing it.
A Steve Gadd Inspired Groove Spice Idea (Slick Drumming Patterns You Can Actually Use 1)
มุมมอง 1455 หลายเดือนก่อน
Let me show you an idea I use to spice up my groove playing. It's a drum lick using 16th note triplets that uses those groove friendly parts of the drum set: the hi-hat, the bass drum and the snare. It fits within your groove, and that makes it a very "useable" idea. It sounds super slick, it's rooted in some great ideas that I first heard people like Steve Gadd use, and it will definitely add ...

I know, I know, a little bit of a click bait-ish title. But it is true. This is a 32nd note idea that I adapted from something that I LOVE that Dave DiCenso has sometimes played. The version I heard him play was as 16th note triplets, but in this version, I work things out as 32nd notes. And I've got a PDF for you, which you can download here: nasty-licks.s3.amazonaws.com/Nasty-Lick-119.pdf It'...

Vinnie Rules
That’s a fact!!
@@MarkFeldman I've been a fan of Vinnie Colaiuta for some time. I'm most blown away by his time with Frank Zappa.
his time w Zappa was incredible!
Good, solid material as always! Plus, all of these tips and ideas tend to lead to other fun stuff!
@@HarryMorgan-j5m thank you Harry!!🙏🏼🙏🏼
Another nice one, Mark.
@@rayboreham2648 thank you Ray!
Very nasty, Mark! Love it. Thank you.
@@rayboreham2648 thank you so much, Ray!!
Cool lick! Thanks for sharing!
you're welcome!!!
Nice one! Thank you.
you're welcome!
You know that WWJD? bracelet? Mine says, "What Would Ringo Do?" Good guide for gigs
yes! What would Ringo do is a good way to think of this.
Simple, and Powerful
@Enzo-M_D thank you!
baloney. (Mark told me to write that -- it's not meant as an insult!) I get very uncomfortable trying to fit 3 or 5 notes across 4x4 16th notes without getting tripped up on the time, and I want to get more comfortable with it. Is there an exercise that you would recommend for woking on this? I see drummers mention it a lot and I don't know where to start getting used to it. This looks like a great one to work on, RLRLF... maybe just set to a slow metronome?
Ha ha ha! Baloney is the secret password. So to answer your question, the way to work on any of this stuff is to write it out first, and then play it very slowly while counting the mnemonics out loud. that will solve all the problems of getting used to a pattern, understanding how it sits within the time and knowing where you are in the phrase and the time while maintaining the “weird” pattern.
baloney😆
ha ha!!! Yes, the inside joke works!!! thank you. hee hey
Amazing 😮
Thank you! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks Mark! This is a cool idea that works really well with the Samba pattern. It's gonna take a me a minute to get it up to speed and make it second nature, but I love a challenge!
I think it was from a tune called Sicily from the leprechaun album, but I could be wrong. Love that groove!
You could very well be right about that, James! That is an album that I've listened to soooooo many times.
Oops Sicily is on Friends, such a wonderful album!
@@jamesreinking7378it is. And another one that I’ve listened to a billion times!
great!
thanks Bobby!!!
Play what feels best for you is what he said in opening statement, 5 piece for me feels good !
Yes! Whatever works for you my friend!!
Very very cool! Thank you Mark, for posting this.
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching, my friend!
Excellent advice as usual, Mark. Thank you for continuing to provide us with these little nuggets of gold. Imitate. Assimilate. Innovate. Brilliant.
Hi Ray -thank you. I can’t take credit for the idea…. The great Clark Terry is where I learned it…. But it is a powerful concept!
Thanks, your background music makes it hard to understand you.
Hi. Sorry about that. Noted. I will watch out for that in the future…..
A Single Drag Tap I believe.
Hey Nick! Thanks. In Wilcoxin's book, Modern Rudimental Swing Solos, he calls it : "Single Drag Version #2"
Brilliant, Mark. Thanks so much. I'm really looking forward to giving these a try. Cheers🍻
Thank you Ray! Enjoy! I'd love to hear about your thoughts once you dig into these!! -MF
Smooth 😎
Thank you!
Exactly, was just making this point last night to someone. For me less things to hit the more i rely on creativity. 4 drums, 4 cymbals n hats perfect for me.
yes. I was playing a little bigger kit recently and when I switched back to just four drums last week, I was happier!! thanks for watching, 🙏
Is there some things you "absolutely can't play" on a 4-piece kit? Is it possible let say, to play for example In the Air Tonight fills with some tricks?
It's always possible to just orchestrate the rhythms of very specific fills in different ways....you can assign the notes to different drums. If I want to replicate the vibe of a fill that has a lot of toms on a four piece kit, I might just work the bass drum in. For a fill like "in the air tonight," I might play : RLF RLF RLF RLF RFLF or something like that and use mostly toms. That being said, if you were going to be in a Phil Colins cover band for example, you'd probably have to add the toms and replicate his set up. Ditto for Rush or Zeppelin or anything else where you have to be "truthful" to original artist's voice.... I hope that helps.
Slick, my man. I'm gonna have to try to work that in. Recording some new (kinda finished) demo songs tomorrow. Ha ha, it'll be fine 🤞
YES!!! Do it. I can't wait to hear it. Thanks for the kind words and for watching my stuff. 🙏🤓🥁
Close...but I picked the jack of spades 😁
You are mistaken. I can't tell you how I know you're mistaken because that might give something away, but I know for a fact that you could not have chosen the jack of spades
Well you asked me to pick a card and that was my choice, how can you guarantee a singular card when there are 5 to choose from?
@@richardworaker8090 I shall not debate with you my friend. But I do appreciate you watching the video 🙏🏼
you just changed all the cards, no clue how but i saw it coming
hmmmmm...... Those are the same cards in the whole video. I didn't switch them out for any other cards... if you watch the video you'll see that the cards are always in view and there are no edits
He somehow switched the cards
If I somehow switched the cards that would be magic! (I didn’t though) 🪄🧞♂️
How..... I guess you figured we'd pick the closest or the furthest card.
I will never tell 😉
Very Interesting Mark. Thank you from Firenze-Italy

Thank YOU!!! 🙏
Ok, so one of the things that always threw me off was the cymbal hit after the fill. That's on the ONE AFTER the fill? THAT is what was confusing me. It really helped to watch it over and over on the video and count the fill out, then BACK into the grove. Thanks!!!
Yes, the crash is on the following “one.” I’m so glad you found this helpful. How is the “pro sounding drum fills” course coming?
@@MarkFeldman Hey there - well just figuring that ONE thing out has made the WORLD of difference for me. I supposed I should have figured it out already, but it kept on confusing me. It would completely throw the count off for me. I've gone over this video many many times (and embarrassingly number of times), playing along with it, and I think the penny has finally dropped for me!!!! Yeah. I had kind of lost the plot re: the "pro sounding drum fills" course - but I think I'm back in the saddle now. Many thanks!!!!
CB - I’m so glad this is helped you!
@@cindyburnes8226 By the way, if you have questions re the Fills course, feel free to email me.... 🤓
@@MarkFeldman Will do. I just need to log back on and get started again. This short video has really helped me understand some things. So now I'm going to look back over those videos. AND, of course, I did recognize a few of the fills here 🙂
This is one of the best you have.
Thank you Charlie!!!
Got here from your newsletter :) Need to use 6-stroke rolls more often thanks for the lesson!

You continue to amaze me with your generosity and your zeal in promoting percussion education, all free for us and a ton of work for you!
Fantastic Mark ! love the 3-3 and groups of 4s or 5s. I stole the 3-3 thing from Bissonnette from "Brain Dance" / Brandon Fields back in the day & have been goofin around w/ those lately. Even doing 9 groupings as 6 in the hands 3 in feet. Thank you ! GBG
Hey @GeoffGillDrums ... Thank you so much for your kind words. When you say 3/3 are you talking about right hand/left foot/left hand/right foot? Yeah that’s a killer killer lick much overlooked difficult to play clearly the coordination is sort of strange at first. Anyway thanks 🎉man I really appreciate your opinions!
Getting comfy with heel-toe bass drum doubles helped me with this. The single leg lift tricks my brain into thinking its only a single motion.
Interesting… I don’t use that technique but whatever makes those two fast notes comfortable …you use…
Mn um dia eu vou tocar igual vc
thanks Max
Delicious!

Damn!!!!!!...... Sometimes a less intellectual but gut response is required. This is part of why we drummers play the drums. I love this style and you are great at it. CD ove this style

Thanks, I appreciate it. I really can’t do a tutorial because it’s not my effect. But I can direct you to the right place if you email me at markfeldmandrums at gmail dot com
Really great, so smooth. Would love a tutorial if your willing to show. It was so clean and believable
Those RLL and KKRL licks are always slick, but what makes your playing here extra smooth criminal to me is this. The shifted backbeat during the lick, then avoiding a big '1' (even stopping the hihat), and finally ending the phrase with the hihat barking towards the backbeat.. like a precisely engineered tumbling down the stairs 😂🔥
Mike - I can't tell you how happy this made me. Thank you so much, man!
Thanks I think this could be applied to a Ska beat kinda.what the heck is fdsa..fun drum school..a ?

Yoooo grandpa you got some talent! Edit: wait i dont think u are old 😅
Get lost
@@MarkFeldman I'm sorry dude I didn't mean to call you old, u actually do got some good talent
Ok, thanks I think
@@MarkFeldman can u solve it? I actually learned 3 months ago and can do it in 22 seconds!
I can’t do it that fast-- I’m at about 4 minutes! 22 seconds--that’s fast!
Philly Joe Jones used this lick a lot. Also, he would combine the 6 with an extra triplet making it a 9! The 9 blurs the bar and has a nice effect. Try that.
Philly Joe -the quintessential jazz drummer of his era. Definitely hugely influential for me.
