Hey Dan, do you remember Diablo?
It was a hack and slash dungeon crawling RPG developed by Blizzard. Oh, it’s great fun!
But that isn’t really what I want to talk about. Due to some ongoing technical difficulties I’ve decided to put my series of video game tutorials on hold for now. I’m pressing pause to focus on some other projects and things I’ve got going on. But I’ve been having a lot of fun with these, so you can be sure that I’ll be back at some point. I just can’t say when. For now, thanks for watching.

I really don't understand Rudyard Kipling. He produces this banger of a poem and then he has to go and ruin it by also writing the most racist poem in history, the White Man's Burden. this game masters of magic 2 and deadline 2 shrine wars and space bucks were the four games i remember loving but not really knowing how to play as a young kid. i remember just messing around with all of them and being blown away. That was at like 8-10 years old and they were always at the top of my list. It took me until 33 to manage to first remember the names which took a lot of googling and guessing and then to play them again and then lose them (space bucks) or have them for good (the other 3). Do to being a kid i never truly understood what i was doing then and that mostly carried over to 33 but now i'm at that point after a life of gaming to think i can figure it out and now i'm here nervous to learn but so excited to finally understand how to play. Can't wait to unlock this game fully

Masters of Orion 2 is another game to check out. It’s a space colony game. DOS
I've heard a lot about it but never played it back in the day. Definitely want to try it out someime.
I would strongly advise you to try Remnants of the Precursor, or rotp for short. It's a recent indie game that aims to take the best out of Moo1 and Moo2, I've played tons of both games back in the days and RotP is such a godsend <3

I think this was my favourite game by an English country mile when I was a teenager. Fantastic game. Nice to see it again. Too bad I lost the cd a while back!😞. Thanks for showing it!

Yes, a combination of hiring a mercenary band and using the 50 archers you start with in your wooden palisade. That should be enough to conquer any other undefended county. After conquering Taupe I disbanded the army to save on their wages. Mercenaries are an expensive but effective way of grabbing more territory early in the game. Of course you can change the number of troops and crowns you start with in the advanced settings, to adjust the difficulty of your game.
@@matthewinrealtime Can you explain the combat keys. Not sure how to control them myself or is it ok to just let the computer do it?
I go over the combat in more specifics in Part 5 of this guide. Basically everything is done with the mouse with no keyboard shortcuts. Usually the computer's autocalc will result in you losing more troops than necessary if you play the combat yourself.

What does the -t setting indicate?
-t seems to tell DOSBox what type of image file is being mounted. So "-t cdrom" means "the type of image being mounted is a CD Rom". Other valid commands that can follow -t are floppy and hdd for floppy disks and hard drive images, respectively.
so what out there compares to this?
If you're looking for a turn-based strategy game with more emphasis on expanding and advancement there's the Civilization series. The Heroes of Might And Magic series has much more focus on combat and customizing your military forces. And if you like Sci-Fi then I'd recommend Deadlock: Planetary Conquest.
I'd say most of the Total War series has a lot of the same concepts as seen here in Lords2. The battles are more complex but are the same flavor of RTS goodness. The turn based campaigns feel very similar to me between Lords2 and the TW series in general.

were there 2 different exe files for this game? I remember there being a multiplayer version of this. had to be over modem at the time
Yes there was a multiplayer mode available. I'm not sure why it isn't on this copy, since it is mentioned in the readme file. We got it a couple years after release as a discount CD only sale, so maybe Sierra removed it from those copies.

I played this game for the first time about five years ago. It's great how such a simple game could so accurately capture the Star Wars feel. Very enjoyable game, and imo one of the best doom clones out there 😋
The maps, enemies, sounds, music, and the sense of being outnumbered really come together to make it fun. Did you ever play the sequel, Jedi Knight?
@@matthewinrealtime Back then I went on a rampage, playing classic DOS and early windows games, the likes of doom, duke Nukem 3d, the original Comand & Conquer, c&c red alert, and the first Tomb Raider (amongst others); so I never got to it

You're welcome, I'm glad you're enjoying them as much as my brother does. This first game definitely suffers from the very basic controls and simple AI. I had a lot more fun with the sequel.

The in-game dialogue is a lot quieter than your voice over. I wonder if you could normalize it for the chunks where it's just characters talking to each other.

Good work. Now we can start to program some DOS applications for a 32 bit x86 CPU with the assembly programming language. We start from the 16 bit Real Address Mode of DOSBOX and we can use a lot of BIOS and DOS software interrupts to load a file into the memory or to show a picture in the graphic mode in 800x600x32 for example.
