Prof Francois Venter give us his patented annual HIV update. He covers his latest thoughts on the possible ART regimens of the near future and the challenges with getting access in low- and middle-income countries. He also briefly deals with some of the new data on metabolic and weight issues with various antiretrovirals.

Dr Charlotte Sriruttan-Nel, head of the NICD's Parasitology Reference Laboratory, gives us an update on Malaria, concentrating on the hot topics in the field at the moment - what's new and what to look out for.

Dr Sarah Stacey discusses waterborne skin and soft tissue infections. These infections are very frequently mismanaged, since the bacteria responsible can be quite exotic and they frequently don't respond to the sorts of empiric antibiotics given for conventional skin and soft tissue infections. Some of these infections can be life-threatening too, and this is an important topic.

Enterococcal infections can be very difficult to treat, because they are intrinsically resistant to most antibiotics, and can acquire resistance to most of the rest of them. Tyral Ramsamy focuses on local South African epidemiology and resistance mechanisms, as well as the latest therapeutic approaches.

Rae Wake focuses on the rationale behind testing combination anti fungal therapy for invasive fungal infections, and introduces a trial for doing just this in South Africa in 2025.

Dr Judy Rothberg gives a talk with the intriguing title, "The People vs Polio". She covers the peculiarities of polio and how humans are now paradoxically perhaps the biggest obstacle to polio's eradication now.

Nelesh is a Wits professor and the South Africa's top mycologist. He and his team have done some amazing work in unravelling the epidemiology of dimorphic fungal infections in South Africa, and here he covers those related to HIV.

Join us for a deep dive into the challenge of nontyphoidal Salmonella infections tricky bacteria that remain a significant health, particularly in resource limited settings. They also pose unique challenges in immunocompromised patients, particularly those living with HIV. Sharon examines the current state of research, clinical challenges, and best-practice strategies to improve patient outcomes.

Kerrigan McCarthy updates us on the latest changes to the South African national Extended Program on Vaccination.

Dave Spencer puts his extensive experience of HIV to use in this talk which gives a retrospective of 3 decades of HIV therapy, and asks about the way forward.

Dr Lior Chernick gives a talk entitled "The Green-Eyed Monster". As you might guess from the title, Lior talks about Pseudomonas infections, reviewing these incredibly adaptable bacteria and the fascinating syndromes they cause. He touches on some of the contemporary issues like the combination therapy conundrum, and where some of the new (and old) drugs fit in.

Dr Sipambo is a paediatric infectious diseases specialist at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, and she focuses on the South African perspective of antimicrobial resistance. She also includes a practical guide on how to navigate stock-outs, which are unfortunately a frequent reality in clinical practice.

Dr Lyle Murray focuses on the commonly used immunosuppressive drugs, including biologics, and details the infectious complications of immune suppression.

After reviewing the basics of hydatid biology, Dr Jeremy Nel covers the latest on the various therapeutic options, and show how approaches have evolved over time.
