🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The Tale of the Scottish Thistle 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #folklore #history #scotland
More than two hundred different types of thistles exist, and several different varieties are found in Scotland - anything from the milk thistle to the cotton thistle, but what makes this plant so endearing to Scottish culture and even having an Order around it?
Discover in about 3 minutes how the thistle became a symbol of Scotland, what the Vikings had to do with it, why it was adopted as the national emblem, and how and why the Order of the Thistle originated and evolved over time.

To say james command was questionable at best. From Wikipedia James, like his brother, sought refuge in France, serving in the French army under Turenne against the Fronde, and later against their Spanish allies.[20] In the French army James had his first true experience of battle, in which, according to one observer, he "ventures himself and chargeth gallantly where anything is to be done".[20] Turenne's favour led to James being given command of a captured Irish regiment in December 1652, then appointed Lieutenant-General in 1654.[21] In 1657, France, then engaged in the Franco-Spanish War (1635-1659), agreed an alliance with the Commonwealth of England, and when Charles responded by signing a treaty with Spain, James was expelled from France.[22] James quarrelled with his brother over this choice, but ultimately joined Spanish forces in Flanders led by the French exile Condé. Given command of six regiments of British volunteers, [21] he fought against his former French comrades at the Battle of the Dunes.[23] After France and Spain made peace with the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees, James considered taking a Spanish offer to be an admiral in their navy, but declined the position. Soon after, the 1660 Stuart Restoration returned his brother to the English throne as Charles II.[24]

Did you know, the death of Macbeth is often interpreted as a consequence of both fate and his own actions. The witches’ prophecies set the stage for his downfall, but it is his own choices - his murder of king Duncan, and subsequent rampage - that drive the plot forward. This duality is a key aspect of his tragic flaw: the inability to reconcile fate and free will. 👀💭 And just for those wondering, reconciling fate and free will is a philosophical and existential concept that refers to the tension between predetermined events (fate) and individual agency (free will). It is the struggle to understand how much of our lives are covered by forces outside of our control (such as destiny or fate), and how much we can shape through our own choices and actions (free will). 😮

Douglas was referred to mainly as Sir James of Douglas or Lord of Douglas. The poet John Barbour would refer to him as the "good Sir James' or the "good lord of Douglas" but it was not a title or nickname. Barbour refers to his dark hair. In the Middle Ages devils were often depicted as black (from the fires of Hell). It is likely the supposed nickname "Black Douglas" came from these two elements. No black armour recorded.

Interesting video, although the miss use of miss understanding of the word Catholic is the man disappointing fact in this video. The word Catholic means universal and does not and can not only mean the church of rome members. Any religionor faith made up of different people with different skins colours, different language, from different country's are ALL Catholic. Islam, Judaism, orthodox, church of rome and protestant are in fact Catholic.
