Given what is known about the use of mind-altering substances in "worship" in the 1st century, Revelation is the spillage of a bad trip.
Thanks for commenting! While an interesting theory, we couldn't find any references to conscience-altering substances used by the early Christians among extra-Biblical literature. The use of the substances you mentioned were well-known and documented among the Greeks, so if Christians embraced them it should have been documented as well - especially in the The Didache, the manual for Christian worship of the underground church that dates to the second century. Fasting was a practiced used by early Christians, and the late stages of starvation can induce hallucinations, but despite the fantastical content, the length and literary style of Revelation doesn't suggest it was written by someone on the birnk of death, but actually quite lucid.
