    The first time he mentioned his mother's mother and that he loved her dearly, I assume that she had passed away. He thought that he saw her on a bus while driving by, like a ghost. It's a metaphor for the struggles his grandmother went through on the back of the bus and how that haunted his mother and himself through generational traumas. We feel so far away from the generations before us even though the "apparitions" of them are right in front of our eyes within ourselves

    I think there was a lot of tension and instead of having a real, educated conversation they let anger and projection get the best of them. As soon as real stuff was being said it suddenly turned into sexual tension... giving the illusion that everything's fine again. In reality it's a physiological release of tension, but the underlying issues remain.

    As a queer person I have a double edged opinion on the f bombs being used. I understand he was making a point, that it's bad to use. It's supposed to be cringey to listen to him say it but... I don't know if we're at that point yet? I don't think straight people cringe at the f word like they would if a white person said an ethnic slur or if an able bodied person said R-slur. I think we're at the place where we know it's bad but lots of people still say it like the R word for a while . So, I dunno. Appreciated your thoughts on it. I love the song. it brought me to tears. I'm not black but I come from a lower class background where that "don't ask don't tell" taboo exists too. Kendrick blew the roof off that. Super brave and raw. Also I hear what you're saying about the black community but black straight women have also been some of the biggest supporters and allies so there's also that. Both personally and in activist spaces.

    How does a mothers mistrust of her sons honest answer affect him as a man to trust any other woman in his life?

    • @impeccabletaste1850
      @impeccabletaste1850 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it necessarily stops him from trusting any other women directly. But i think it created some insecurities within him that carried over into adulthood. Probably made him unsure of himself and for a while he may even have questioned if it actually happened since she was so insistent. Could affect confidence, a lot of things potentially. Guilt. He was such a young kid when he experienced that and he is such an introspective person. I think sometimes we can underestimate how trauma or certain things can affect us and present itself later in life. He went through some top notch therapy and I'm sure they were able to find the path and how that experience led to some undesirable traits that he has now.

      I gotchu. I'm a woman and raised Catholic (went to Catholic school from elementary to hs and everything) and even back then the church's stance on women's rights never made sense to me, it just didn't make sense with the teachings of grace and mercy and being humble and non-judgmental, nor tryin to impose these views on errybody (particularly using the government to do so, that's a huge no according to the gospel)...so yeah, I backed away too, but I never lost or questioned my faith since this clearly was (and is) an ol' men in Rome problem that are def disconnected from reality.

    Finally someone who wasn’t scared to touch upon the most heart wrenching part of the song. Seems like everyone wanna skip or not address the part about slavery, sodomy and the black family. Thank you. I was sexually abused within the family too but cousins but I don’t blame them…they was just as young (2-3yrs older than me) and knew no better. This album make me want to seek therapy so bad, I think I will. Great recap, thanks for understanding ❤️❤️❤️ May God heal us from Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome. Anybody looking to learn more Dr. joy DeGruy is the founder of PTSD (still alive and from Cali) she has seminars on TH-cam and another great book that really break down the present effects of slavery in us is Breaking The Chains of Psychological Slavery by Naim Akbar. Just for context, i think you’re confusing the word “sodomy” with “rape” and “abuse” Edit: I’m not saying that in a combative internet commenter way, just sharing that information because communication is important. And historically, people in power who are religious zealots forcing their views on others have used “sodomy” to demonize and make illegal any form of sex that deviates from the accepted standard, who has been homosexual sex by old world standards

    It all ties in to mental slavery and how its all instilled from back then as to ehy we are go through this stuff today. He basically we at some point we have to breaks the chains of bondage. Its all mental. Also i think kendrick is talking about physical abuse his mum went through with her brother and they thought he was going through it with the brothers son, again that never ending cycle.

    Thank you for your insights. This song hit me much in the same way. There’s a brilliant therapist, Resmaa Menakem, he wrote a book called “My Grsndmothers Hands”. He really lays out a lot of what Kendrick was putting down here. He says that individual trauma decontextualized starts to look like personality traits, family trauma decontextualized starts to look like family dynamics and patterns, and collective trauma experienced by a people starts to look like culture. It’s going to take a lot of healing for us to work our way out of this, but starting to learn how to face our pain and talk to each other about it is where we start.

    I think the “mothers mother” line was a double play on both the prior sentence and the following one. His mother’s mother, followed him after she died. The “back of some buses” line could be stating that she experienced that since her generation was during the civil rights movement. It’s also an extension to the next line “I wake up at night”, saying he sometimes falls asleep in the same spot she used to sit in.. on the back of the bus..
