I was a decent club footballer in my day (on my good days), but every time you ran into players that played professionally for any length of time, you realize the gulf that exists between an amateur and someone who has spent at least a few years of their life training and playing, let alone 40 years. It is their speed of thought and the ability to reliably execute the simpler things in the game, like taking a penalty. I remember I joined a multi-pitch, pick-up session for a season, and there was a 45 year old ex-pro on the group and due to the way they picked the teams, I could usually end up on his side most of the time. I can't remember a time we lost. Once I got the hang of feeding him the ball, it was just too easy. Because the sides and the games mixed every week no one noticed our partnership, and sadly we didn't speak a word of each others language, but we used to shake hands before and after every game, grinning happily, and I like to think he enjoyed our partnership just as much as I did.
