Yeah that one's pretty good. I really like that one. Someone else mentioned that too that I left out the Russian schools. I think the main reason why I left it out is that I don't know anyone who has personally been there. All the schools I have listed in my video I have had first hand or secondhand experience. I don't personally know any artists in the industry who have studied at St Petersburg art academy. It slipped my mind and that's the only reason why I forgot to mention it. But from what I seen, the artwork is really nice.

Thanks for your comment. I respect your perspective. I understand people are posting AI generated stuff on Art Station or deviant art, and it is being displayed next to digital paintings. I personally don't even like the term "AI Art" - I would much rather use the term "Synthography" because it sounds like the word photography. Synthography - meaning the art of synthetically generated images. I think Synthography is its own thing. Its value isn't just being used as reference images for artists. It is its own art form just like photography or 3D modeling. It's own art form and there are experts at doing it. Yes, I understand that most artists hate AI because the datasets used to train the models contains data scraped from entire internet. But I think the REAL reason artists hate AI is because it threatens their ability to earn income and undermines the value of their work. Artists steal photos and reference images from the internet all the time. There is even a best selling book called "Steal like an ARTIST." I created this video for artists because if you are worried about your ability to earn income and the value of their work, the solution is to embrace and master technology. Not run away from it. Just my personal opinion.

Mechanical engineering is a solid foundation. Graphic design is helpful, but not necessarily a standout skill. Many individuals, including graphic designers, artists, interior designers, and architects, possess some level of graphic design proficiency. You might only need 1-2 classes, not an entire minor. A background in music is a nice addition but may not significantly impact your prospects. With this skill set, you may be well-suited for engineering roles, but potentially not as much for design positions and very far away from creative direction (in my opinion). I have a close friend and co-worker with a background in mechanical engineering who took numerous art and Photoshop classes. While graphic design is useful, it's a common skill. Developing expertise in these specific areas can enhance your competitiveness in both engineering and design opportunities.

Haha preach. I can't say something like that outright, because I have many colleagues who are alumni there or teach there as well. So it would make them look really bad. But that's generally the sentiment I've gotten from SCAD graduates with a few exceptions. Would you like to add what major you were in? When did you graduate? And what career path you ended up going into?

I majored in both Computer Arts (animation), and Illustration for my BFA, and got my MFA in Computer Arts (focusing mainly on 2D Animation and Motion Graphics). The great thing about a school like SCAD, especially now, is the access to the various labs and studios, which is (almost) 24 hours across the board. I think SCAD does have business courses now, but there weren’t any when I was there, and I wish I had the presence-of-mind to have taken business or accounting classes somewhere else, maybe at one of the other local colleges in the area. A lot of the pitfalls from my time in college came mostly from a mix of lack of knowledge, a few bad habits, being disorganized, and other external circumstances. No, I wasn’t into drugs, drinking or partying at all, and was pretty self-motivated for the most part. Again, SCAD and art schools like it are too expensive; yes, students should always be aware of what they’re investing financially, but being preoccupied with that educational investment, to the point where it becomes disruptive is a problem. I can at least say that I completed what I started. I know more than a few students who dropped out, couldn’t afford to continue, and still owe student loans. For me, if I had a ‘magic do-over’ (which I clearly don’t), I’d probably go to a less expensive university with a solid art program (where I get to learn illustration and animation) and study something business related. Basically a double or even triple major of Art/ Media Arts and Business. To young career-minded artists, or anyone, regardless of what college you go to, my main suggestions are: - try to nail-down exactly what you want to do right from the beginning, but give yourself enough space to change your mind, if you have to. - there are lots of options when it comes to schools, so don’t get too dogmatic about your choice. Take the time to make a solid choice for you. - develop personal discipline strategies and routines, with regards to your work. Art requires a lot of time, practice and motivation especially when you don’t feel like doing it. - one solution that works really well is to ALWAYS start things early. Any project, assignment or exercise you’re given, either start it immediately, or within 24 hours. Even if all you start with is a list of ideas, a list of shots on a post-it… that’s enough to get the ball rolling and eventually finish the work. Stay away from all-nighters the day before the work is due; that’s just stupid. - in my opinion, EVERY art student needs to get some level of business education under their belt, whether that’s a major a few elective courses, or a few hours talking to your rich aunt or uncle who owns their own establishment. - while in school, by all means, make full use of your schools counseling services. You will get overwhelmed by many unexpected things, and talking to roommates and classmates won’t cut-it. Talking to a professional cuts through a lot of b.s. real fast. Either do that for free, or at a discount in school, or pay hundreds of $$$ per hour later in life after you e graduated. - Last but not least, and this might sound counterintuitive, but hear me out… stop worrying so much about when you’ll graduate. We all want to avoid excessive college loan debt, and staying longer in college isn’t ideal, I get it. But… while you’re in the college/university bubble, you can truly take advantage of an additional major, extra networking, extra access to (the numerous) college resources, and either work, or start a small business (long) before you graduate. It’s tricky, but it’s doable. Ask anyone, your time in college will be over at some point. Make it count while you’re there. That response was meant to be shorter, but you got me going, so there you have it. In closing, that’s my take on things based on my life experience so far. It’s not for everyone, but I know it will help a handful of people, and I’m okay with that.

Potentially! We would probably need to specify which majors we are talking about. One could potentially do a major in engineering and a minor in art. I know some people who do that. But I think that a degree in architecture or theatrical design, offers a more comprehensive set of skills for the student. On the other hand if you have a major in architecture, and a minor in theater, I think that would be home run. A lot of the skill sets would overlap, and you would have a wide application of how to use those skills in different real world contexts.

I bought the toned paper from a store called Kelly Paper. However, you can get a pre-made one on Amazon as well. I don't know too much about urban planning - so this isn't a definitive answer. I think I had a coworker at the theme park design firm who majored in it, and in his job, he mainly did boring CAD drawings, tracing over existing plans. He didn't find his job very fulfilling or interesting, he wished he could take on more challenging and creative roles. Based on that one example, I don't think urban planning would be the best major. While it's okay, I would recommend architecture as a much more suitable major if you want to design theme parks. It's a more rigorous field and opens up opportunities for a broader range of roles. Architects probably can do a bit of urban planning. But urban planners can't do a lot of the things that architects do.

Hey fantastic questions. I took a look at some of your videos on your TH-cam channel, and your artwork looks pretty good. I'm not exactly sure what you mean about the patchy thing. They look good! But your hunch is correct. When I use markers, I try to have my marker touch the paper as little as possible. I try not to get it too saturated. I flick my wrist and try to be as fast as I possibly can, using as little ink as I can. If your markers are getting patchy, yes it could be a result of blending too many values together. Another suspicion is that it also happens when you blend multiple brands of markers together and the ink isn't compatible. I know that when you use the brush nib you have to go over it a couple times. When I use a chisel nib it's a little bit more like a sniper. You have to be quick. In terms of the paper, I like using the toned paper that I use in the video. It's nice to do the highlights. But if you want white paper, I would recommend getting paper specially formulated for laser printers. The paper has a special coating on it that makes it really good for marker rendering. There is marker paper as well, but that stuff is really expensive. If you want a marker sketchbook, you can buy a ream of laser printer at the office supply store for about 20 bucks. And you can probably bind it into sketchbooks about five of them. Using a coil bind at the binding place like office depot.

And thank you for the compliments 😊 The patchiness is most visible when I try to blend darker color with lighter color, but maybe it's just a normal thing with markers and I'm being too nitpicky. I have a tendency to spot all the imperfections in my artwork. I'm used to drawing with colored pencils or painting with acrylics and with those I can go over and over the same spot until I'm satisfied with the result. With markers, not so much. I need to change my attitude towards making art and aim for broader impression instead of precise details. I haven't used toned paper, it would be fun to try out. The laser print paper didn't even cross my mind but it makes perfect sense, thanks! It will be perfect for quick sketches and experimenting. I'm learning something new everytime I draw and it's been so much fun! 😀

@@BlankieTheGirlInTheBlanketFort Sure no problem! I think a huge difference with markers is that they were never designed for "fine art" in mind. I believe they were created for industrial designers, architects, interior designers and maybe anime/ manga artists. Markers were designed for SPEED and consistency, not for smooth blending.
