Yes! So I use a matte fixative spray and do two coats of it. THEN I apply acrylic varnish. I do 2-4 coats of that to make sure gouache doesn’t crack. But yes first isolation coat is VERY important. Or you will ruin the entire painting. I’ve had to experiment a lot with this. Gouache is my favorite medium, and I hate that one of its cons are that it can be easily damaged by water and also cracks on canvas. So I’ve tried countless varnishing techniques to try and negate this and this is the one I found to be the best.

Also keep in mind you’ll be sacrificing that nice Matt gouache finish that we all love so much. You’ll be transforming it into a more acrylic varnished looking style. But to me, that’s a worthy trade-off for being able to work in Gouache.

I would also recommend to still paint with goache on a harder board or paper. I’m trying out canvases right now to see how it goes because I’m trying to avoid using acrylic. But I could see in the future if anyone ever had to take the canvas off and roll it up it would probably crack anyway with four coats of varnish. So I would probably stay clear of giant canvases for gouache as they will flex more than a smaller one and you probably won’t have to roll up smaller ones to ship them.

@@samsgarage3540if it was me I would use fixative spray 2-3 coats to double make sure it’s fixed. Then slather that nice juicy varnish over it. That’s what I would do, but of course, do your own research. I use liquitex and Winsor and newton professional matte varnish spray for isolation coat then I use satin varnish for acrylic mediums by liquitex. The stuff getting poured into tin in this shirt is that stuff
