The routine seen on the video by Mr. Jones is absent of all the fundamental elements of Authentic Kata , because it is lacking Kime, no Zashin, no Koshi-Waza, no Kamae ,no Soto-Uke, no Sukui-Uke, no Nuki-tsuki,,no,Jodan-Uchi, no,Mede-tsuki etc.The purpose of the Rokushaku Bo ( 182cm) approximately 6 feet long and made with Hard Wood and in the Okinawan Fighting Discipline is to engage in combat against another individual with a Bo-staff. When an individual is using a weapon, you allow the weapon to be the focus of the combat. Historical in the Ryukyu kingdom there were no tournaments, Movies, TV shows, just individuals engaging in authentic combat; one person walks away, the other person on the ground incapacitated or dead

Traditional the meaning of the word: existing in or as part of a tradition; long-established, following or conforming to tradition : adhering to past practices or established conventions the meaning of Invented Traditions: Invented traditions are cultural practices that are presented or perceived as traditional, arising from the people starting in the distant past, but which in fact are relatively recent and often even consciously invented by identifiable historical actors

When an individual is using a weapon, you allow the weapon to be the focus of the combat. Historical in the Ryukyu kingdom there were no tournaments, Movies, TV shows, just individuals engaging in authentic combat; one person walks away, the other person on the ground incapacitated or dead Kata is a series of Offense and Defensive movements with precise, “efficient body/bio- mechanics” to teach the individual how to engage in close-quarter “hand to hand combat” with a weapon or without a weapon. The word “Kata” is best translated not as a “Form”, but as “Pattern” of offense and defensive movements. Martial Arts = Military Skills and unfortunately many people are pretentious in themselves believing they are “Martial Artist “without any knowledge of combat. Spinning a light piece of plastic or an elongated Tooth-pick is not indicative of authentic combat skills.

“You may train for a long time, but if you merely move your hands and feet and jump up and down like a puppet, learning karate is not very different from learning a dance. You will never have reached the heart of the matter; you will have failed to grasp the quintessence of karate-do.” - Gichin Funakoshi “Karate is Budo and if Budo is removed from Karate it is nothing more than sport karate, show karate, or even fashion karate-the idea of training merely to be fashionable.” - Mas Oyama Budo, Bugei , Bujutsu should be dignified , not Bastardized “Train the body and develop stamina and endurance. But the spirit of competition and power that presides over them is not good, it reflects a distorted vision of life. The root of the martial arts is not there.” - Taïsen Deshimaru Sports are only amusement ,,,, in the spirt of Zen and Budo everyday life becomes the contest,,,,There must be awareness at every moment-That is the place for mastery of the Self” Taisen Deshimaru “We take refuge in pride because we are afraid to tell the truth to ourselves.” ― Kakuzo Okakura The machinery of competition imposes the monotony of fashion instead of the variety of life. the video clearly demonstrates that it is not Kenjutsu or Kendo or Iaijutsu or Iaido or Battodo. This video has NO Relationship to Authentic Japanese Swordsmanship. There is no Kime, no Zashin, no Koshi-Waza, no Kamae,no Chiburui, no Noto, etc. The sad point is that individuals as seen in this video/videos of just playing with a toy sword will never realize or experience Budo and the intrinsic values of Martial Disciplines. For hundreds of years of men have fought and died on the Battlefield for good or for ill, and now some juvenile mentally of pseudo- Martial Arts is disgracing memory those men, and for what ? simply an amusement for simple minded people. Is it acceptable to you and to others that an individual goes Arlington National Cemetery and then to the “ Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” and starts break dancing ?

this is not in any sense or the correct usage of nomenclature of the word " Tradition" . this routine is pure fantasy , it is evident that this individual has no formal/ authentic training in any type of Japanese Swordsmanship . How many times in a real fight would you be thankful to be able to stop and do a backflip or do a sort of one-hand cartwheel rather than striking, countering, or running away? only in a cartoon, a real life threaten situation of violence is nothing to take lightly , it is very serious , with fatal consequences,, it is very stressful , and the guy doing backflip obviously demonstrates NO ability in the context of: Self-Defense Close Quarter Hand to Hand Combat.

An inconvenient truth is a fact or truth that people may not like because, by accepting or acknowledging it, they might be expected to change behavior or beliefs in order to accommodate the fact, There is an inconvenient truth, in context that something cannot be the truth just because you want it to be true. The salient point is that a person cannot claim to be Quarterback of a baseball team, because no such thing exists. Martial means Military, War, Combat; backflips, summersaults, gymnastics/acrobatic tricks, baton twirling, juggling has no connection to Military Combat , or personal self-defense . It is obvious that you have never trained in Iaido or Nihon Kobudo, or any type of Budo, so for you traditions and correct technical skills have no cognitive reference , therefore you believe that any type of entertainment in the context of lacking in Combative application is acceptable. These videos from ‘ open tournaments’ represent a distorted view of authentic Fighting skills and Disciplines, they ( the open tournaments) are just counterfeits and a mockery of the Spirt of Budo. True Martial Arts is not about entertainment , but of respecting tradition of Combat , if you are not capable of learning the concepts of Budo , then it is no different that a circus performance. Budo: 武道 The noble pursuits of Fighting disciplines to achieve something greater beyond the commonplace mundaneness has been replaced by those who admire the tedium of sycophants and the scorn of time honored traditions to achieve self-discipline and spiritual awareness .

the video clearly demonstrates that it is not Kenjutsu or Kendo or Iaijutsu or Iaido or Battodo. @@seandawdy

Sounds like Sho Nuff from The Last Dragon movie in the 80’s or whenever it was.
