More people could do it if it wasn't 150km into the ride. Headwind also didn't help this year. But, yeh if you start walking from the bottom, maybe you should have done a bit more training... 😅

Maybe a 4th option of not got their fuelling right and out of gas, it’s a very tough ride and not an easy one to train for. I did it last year and walked the last qtr mile at the top on the steepest section hairpins. That was even having a 36/34. Lot of riders walking from the bottom then too. It’s 25% at the bottom so pretty tough and got to push out a lot of power just to keep going

@@simonworsley8631 36/34 still isn’t particularly low for such a long steep hill and as you say, at the end of a tough day. Folk need a bailout gear IME.

I did that once this summer on an unfamiliar trail and it was sort of like the "Frog not realizing it was boiling" metaphor except the end result was I slowly got too far and too deep and finally had to stop and put my feet in 8 inch deep water and walk the bike back. My shoes and socks were squishy the rest of the ride.

I couldn't do that...I just couldn't walk my bike up hill, to spend super money on a light bike for these occasions to, it would be more painful looking back over the years, but i get it, as it's soo tempting on a mountain stage to get off, especially on a monster climb, i know this climb as have done it on a hot humid day and it was made hard due to road surface and hot sticky weather
