Understanding Glasgow's Local Heat and Energy Strategy - Consultation Webinar
Good run down on an involved subject. The helicopter view of the systems that are reporting by Open Energy Monitoring Systems is that heat pumps are still being ‘oversized’ as evidenced by robust data. This is especially interesting when you consider this is a self selecting group which encompasses performance motivated designers/installers/homeowners (or the geekiest/nerdiest of professionals and consumers) - yet still oversized heat pumps. Of course there are some good reasons for that not least regeneration times for hot water cylinders but also the lack of small heat pumps for low heat loss properties.
A very thorough detailed run down. Why did you not insulate the front and rear of building as you probably could of got away with a 7kW heat pump instead of the oversize one.
Hi Richard, Carmen from Loco Home Retrofit here. I can't speak for Paul, but I suspect it's because internal wall insulation would be too disruptive
Great presentation. Thank you. I am about to embark on a retrofit myself so your experience is invaluable. As far as payback period is concerned, wouldn’t it be nice to have a £ figure for the additional wellbeing felt when living in a more comfortable home. If we had a cost on living in an uncomfortable home, people would be rushing to retrofit and build better in the first place. Cheers
Glad you found it helpful! It would certainly be motivating if we could quantify discomfort and wellbeing impacts from cold, unhealthy homes!
Hi, I'm getting a Samsung R290 heatpump installed next month with the Homely controller and OEM so I'm keen to look at your data. I can't see your heatpump listed on heatpumpmonitor, do you have a link?
Hi Jake, Loco Home speaking here. The best way to get in touch with Kat and Iain is either through the Loco Home members forum www.locohome.coop/join/ or email us info@locohome.coop and we can forward your questions
Thank you so much for this video Kat. We learnt a lot from this. We have exactly the same goal & motivations and priorities as you and hope to install a heat pump in 2025. Our house was also built in 1902, is a similar size, has had a new slate roof (awful roofer!) and we are invested with Ripple. The main difference is that our house is a semi in a conservation area in east London. The side wall is our main heat loss but our local council will not allow external insulation, although having declared a climate emergency we live in hope that they will change their mind one day. Living in a terrace house means that you have two side walls that have no heat loss. We're envious! We also have followed Heat Geeks. They recommend keeping the whole house as one zone and not to control individual radiators. I am doubtful about this, unless the aim is just to achieve the highest possible COP. I noticed that you have TRVs. How do you use these? Are they just to stop rooms getting too hot? One more question. Did you have to have a separate consumer unit just for the heat pump? Fred and Miu Gray
