      Freshmen or new comers in general are always in the firing line. Any small mistake is a baptism of fire. Working as a coordinator for some weeks was just fire in my belly. I loved to think how best lighting a fire under my staff but...everyday problems at work just added fuel to the fire...so I was fired cause sooner or later, there is no smoke without fire. Life fire lessons are long lasting 😅🔥

    I consider myself ignorant of the English language (which I'm trying to study), to my ears, from what I've heard, Irish, Canadian and American English seem to sound very similar and very distinct from British English; I believe this is because these 3 are rhotic and perhaps Irish immigrants have influenced the English of Americans. These three variations of English are the only ones I consider when studying as I dislike British English and find it more difficult. Also in the world it seems to me that people tend to have an English more similar to American despite (and in my opinion unfortunately) British English is insisted on in schools, this I assume is due to the fact that American English is prevalent in the media . By now I find British English very anomalous, not only for the pronunciation, but also for the words and for the spelling. As a European I think I will come to Ireland to study English 1) Because it is in the European Union. 2) Because Irish English is more similar to American English (at least in pronunciation). 3) Because I find Irish culture more fascinating than the English one.

    • @CCc-sb9oj
      @CCc-sb9oj 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      English English was also rhotic during the time of American settlement. If you look up the work of Trudgill on the r in the dialects of England, you'll see that as late as the 1950s large swathes of England still spoke with rhotic accents, but they were mostly older people as the younger had been picking up the London trend of decreasing rhoticity for generations and today rhotic accents in England are rare, but still existing in some regional dialects. The r in both Irish English and American English was likely brought to both countries by English settlers originally. There is also the fact that young Irish people tend to have a large degree of American influence on their accents due to the influence of the media (as talked about by head of linguistics at Trinity Jeffrey Kallen on the radio a few years back). So those two factors combined, shared rhoticity compared to Southern British Standard English, and American influence in the media, combine to give a clear impression of similarity between American, Canadian and Irish English, especially to the ears of someone for whom English is not their native language.

The best way to learn a language is by travelling to the country though, in that I am gonna have to agree, but other than that, an english exam in the UK is going to be harder than one in Spain.

    Tessa came up to her desk and picked up the phone. "Hello?" - she asked. "Hi, it's Jenny. Listen, I'm really sorry but I don't think I'll make it to the meeting this evening. You see -- I CAME DOWN WITH some nasty bug yesterday." "Oh dear, that sounds awful!" "...But I hope I'll GET OVER it soon - I have a huge backlog of work to do, it can't wait too long." Considering it had only been a few weeks earlier that Jenny had finished her last cycle of chemotherapy, Tessa felt it was important that her colleague rested as much as possible. "Take your time, Jenny! There's no point rushing back to office when you're feeling unwell," she told her friend. ------ "So, what were your symptoms like in the beginning?" "Well - it all seemed quite innoucous at first; runny nose, a bit of a sore throat. And then all of a sudden I BROKE OUT in a rash all over my body! Then, my blood pressure sky-rocketed, and body temperature got very high indeed..." "Dear, oh dear..." "...I made for the kitchen to get some antihistamines, in the hope of SHAKING OFF at least some of the symptoms. But the next thing I knew - I PASSED OUT and fell to the ground. Thank goodness my head wasn't hurt!" ------- The whole Pottery-Back family held out hope that little 'Clunky' would eventually PULL THROUGH, but much to their despair, the beloved kitten PASSED AWAY in its sleep. At first I thought I would try to cover all the phrasal verbs mentioned in the video, but it's not like the end of the world that I didn't, right? 😉 Thank you for the lesson! 👍

    I’ve noticed most people get an interference from French, as “equipe” pronounced with “kip” is commonly heard as a brand, commercials and as a borrowed word to indicate “team”. Italian sport journalists use this term a lot with a French pronunciation which can justify the confusion in English.
