Xero Shoes Ridgeway Chelsea Review/Barefoot Hiking Chelsea Boot/Barefoot Rugged Chelsea Boot
Xero shoes have historically been very ugly, BUT they have finally started to look nice (getting rid of the huarache strap was key, just like I said...) and this is, in our opinion, probably the best looking shoe they have made to date. A classic looking Chelsea with hiking chomps!? What's not to like!? Well we'll tell ya in today's video. Time stamps and affiliate links below.

Best Minimal Hiking Boot Comparison/Vivo Barefoot Tracker AT VS Be Lenka Ranger 2.0
มุมมอง 1.2K16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
We had no idea that when we got both the Be Lenka Ranger 2.0 and the Vivo Barefoot Tracker AT Leather just how similar they would be! We couldn't help but do a toe to toe comparison between them. Both are super minimal, very grippy, leather, waterproof hikers, but they do come with a pretty big price difference. The question is, is that price difference proportional to their difference in perfo...

I'd love to hear your opinion of the new Vtrek insulated for cold weather....sold on the Wildfire barefoot Shoes Site.
Do you wear footbeds with yours?
@@XCaPTainClipzX we are currently playing with the rose anvil boot breakers. But up to now, no insoles or anything for us in our Jim Greens
I like the looks, but just wish they were able to accomodate people with more voluminous footsies.
Damn I've been desperate for a review of them. And finally we have it. NICE!
You really need to try the Vivo ESC line. Especially the Magna. Best hiking shoe of all time in my opinion. Although the slopped low volume Vivo toebox ruins all their shoes. They would be a clear no1 if they fixed that.
Honestly now after a year of barefoot shoes, I think it's largely a scam 'IF' your feet have significant damage like your big toe is pointed inward from bad shoes all your life. Most of the bare footwear makers offer vids for hundreds of $$ to give you exercises to repair your feet PLUS the cost of their shoes. Sure, like who doesn't have the time to watch expensive videos and spend hrs a day repairing your feet? On their websites, they always show a 30-something female sitting with her toe splayed out like a chimp. I guess that's the "ideal" we should all shoot for......maybe she has simian DNA.
Great review once again. The toe box volume is a big no no. I could never figure out why my Jim Green Barefoot felt like my toes are restricted when the width is okay. It turns out the toe box isn't high enough, which in turns restricts your toes from splaying properly and expanding sideways. I hope they will address that issue as it's a major flaw. I was very harsh on the LEMS boulder grip but I grew very found of them and wear them daily at home. Winter is at the door and my LEMS Summits are ready. My toes move more freely in my LEMS than they do in my Jim Greens, which results in me wearing my LEMS way more. I started my barefoot journey with Xero, but they are very hard to recommend, especially now that other barefoot brands are producing very good products. Splay is killing the market with their designs. LEMS rock with their boots. Xero will have to adapt.
My Xero Denvers are very slippery when wet. They slide on the cars floor mats when getting in or out, and they slide on any smooth surface (Their Prio has the same problem). The tongue is also not gusseted. Fortunately, i love my Lem's Boulder Summits and my Primal Zens which have non-slip soles.
@@kerryrwac I have many different Lems as well. So much more width. Chelsea, primal 2, primal zen, 9-5 and more. They all fit much better.
@millone3393 and they are better made.
Xero shoes are very comfortable for me,BUT they have absolutely ZERO lol traction in wet surfaces!!!
I have eaten so much crap out in the woods because of xeros. I gave up on them a couple years ago cause i don't want to slide off a cliff or something!
I thought it was just me but you said EVERYTHING about Xero that is exactly correct. I cannot wear anything comfortably from them. Slippery as well. Shame that they stick with their formula. I won't be buying any Xero shoes anymore. This is after trying 4 or 5 different styles hoping they would have something for me. Thanks for the honest review.😊
One of the most comfortable shies i have is their discontinued Colorado shoe which is basically a minimalist keen closed toe sandal. Had to buy it second hand. Not sure why they discontinued it. I have the basic black prios. The quality could be slightly better, but it is a pretty comfortable and wide shoe. I've met some others that prefer them over vivo since some say vivos are not wide enough.
Looks almost identical to vivo primus lite / asana...and same high price
@@slavasss2189 definitely wider
Sadly, most Lems shoe are not true zero drop shoes though.
With all my Freets I always buy the thicker 6mm comfort insoles. They make all the difference. Try it with your next Freet reviews. You will love it.
After going to barefoot shoes/boots I’ll never go back. Also I have a pair of these had them for about 6 months. I work in pretty rough conditions and they have held up great.
Do you have all ranking of vivobarefoot?
We just reviewed the new Tracker AT Leather
@sonsofsever I mean list with all of your ranking from 0-10
@@danylo_kosenko we only have the one review from them so far. They don’t send us shoes, so unfortunately we haven’t been able to review as many as we would like to have by now
@@danylo_kosenko also we don't do the ranking thing anymore, sorry! If we did it would vary from shoe to shoe within their lineup though
@@sonsofsever okay thanks 👍
How do these feel for squating? Heels down? Heels up? Does the upper follow your feet or fight with your feet?
Awesome comparison review guys. You are not going to review the Be Lenka Arctic Edge are you? I've been eyeing them for a while now.
@@Smattyy in fact we are! Should be on our feet in a few days
@sonsofsever Oh really. Nice!
Hey friends, great video again! Wondering if y’all will be reviewing the new Runner V1 track? I would like to try them but do not know if they would fit my width. Are these wider than the bahe revive? How do they compare in width to the Altra Escalante racer?
@@hood4thought699 they're on the way now! Splay shoes all feel wider to me than the Revive, but can't say for sure yet with the Run V1 because we don't have them on our feet yet. We'll definitely get a review out on them after some testing though. Find us on Instagram, we'll post the unboxing video and then you should ask this again there after we've gotten to try them out a little
@ thank you so much! Can you share which sizes you guys tried on? I remember one of you have similar foot measurements as me: 26.5cm x 11.1cm (when splaying) and 10.8 at metatarsals
One of the reasons vivobarefoot is so expensive is because they're B Corp. So they pay the people who make them a fair wage. They're not made for 1$ an hour by a child in China. The material on the Esc sole is much more durable in my experience. Although i wear my soles down much more slowly now since I run and walk with Keith Bateman and Heidi Jones way. Older Yet Faster is the best barefoot running method.
Is the ankle as loose as it looks? If the toe box feels tight, i need to go up, but not with a loose ankle. I made that mistake with the Jim Green ankle height shoe.
@@RagnarHoff I don’t find the ankle loose once I lace them up tight enough at the top. Same thing with the Jim green though 🤷🏻♂️
Are the Be Lenkas harsh winterproof? Wet snow/mud or what would be the Lenkas winter option?
@@Jonr.mp4 these can definitely handle snow/mud, but the Ranger isn't insulated super well. So if you want warmth too, the Winter is gonna be the better option.
"No bad weather, only bad gear" is and old Norwegian saying...
@@ole993 fitting for a couple of blue eyed boys, eh? 😂 we are very ancestrally Norwegian and Eric lived there for two years and speaks the language.
@@ole993I enjoyed this exchange... Learned something.
I'd say for people with wider feet, in toe area and midfoot, the ranger would be the better option. Thanks for showcasing this head to head, I liked it, always such great footage showing all kinds of terrain and conditions.
Wish Vivo didn't have so much of a taper. Can't wear them without my outer toes hitting the sides
@@Bluerig-qf2xc same
I much prefer my Be Lenkas over my Vivos but I don't have these two exact models. The reason is that the Be Lenka toe box is wider and also that their tread is more solid. They use a tougher consistency of rubber which actually helps a lot when you're walking on pavement / stone trails. My lass's feet became painful from walking on London's pavement for a couple of weeks in her Vivos - the rubber really is softer, which is nice on grass but Be Lenka still feels as nice there
Hmm. I have tried many of vivos boots and different outsoles and compared to be lenka ranger 2 the vivos are far superior and firmer. The Be Lenkas are super soft in my opinion and not durable at all. They are awesome and grips really well and feel amazing but they are soo soft. My vivos shows almost no signs of wear but the Be Lenkas looked awful already after a few weeks of daily usage on gravel, trails and asphalt.
It might not be worthwhile but I recently got a pair of Vivo Tracker Forest Esc boots (obsidian) and they are my favourite minimalist/barefoot boots I've had. I haven't had many though.
@@blissseeker4719 we'd definitely be interested in them, that would be a cool comparison! It's just tougher for us to review Vivo because the company won't work with us like others do. We're hoping to change that with these last couple videos, fingers crossed!
Seems the ranger could also be a little mlre versatile when walking on side walks, but only if you had to, since the trackers have more aggressive lugs that are more prone to ware down. They definitely would probably shine more for agressive, steep hikes.
Question: Can you use toe spacers like correct toes in the Notorious Lift Radix?
@@robertary1372 if you jump to the comfort section of the video I talk about that, but the short answer is no, it's not quite wide enough for toe spacers
@@sonsofsever I must've missed that. thank you and great video. keep up the good work!
BeLenka Ranger 2.0 has total thickness of the sole 9 mm ( 4mm + 5mm lugs ) and the insole is 2.5 mm thick.👣
Great detailed video guys, thanks very much
Do you think the Bahé boots are qualified for winter (with thick socks)?
@@lightningspike4452 we will have a definitive answer soon, pending snowfall here in Utah lol. I think it will be pretty good though, the lugs are pretty big and it feels like it'll dig in well. It's not insulated, so some really warm socks will definitely be needed, the waterproof lining can only help so much there.
@ Yes I think it might be good, also because the sole is relatively thick
@@lightningspike4452 took the Rediscover into the snow today, it was great! It was in the mid thirties, I wore some smart wool socks and my feet were plenty warm, the traction was really good up and down some pretty steep hills
@ bad weather doesn’t exist after all ;)
Going to check out Barebarics' new insulated shoes for winter? There is a "Frost" version of the Zing with Primaloft insulation and a beefier sole, and a more high-top/short boot style one called the Urbanedge with the same sole. I'm torn between the two for my delivery job for the fast approaching winter, need to decide before the black friday sale ends but theres no content on them anywhere :(
@@ImJustStandingHere we have the arctic edge on the way but none of those other ones
@@sonsofsever Oh I haven't seen those, they looks like a good contender too, more boot like which is what I need
Only issue I have had before with the 1.0 (I've owned probably 6 pairs) is durability. How the sole connects to the shoe in the toe box area comes undown for me pretty regularly (and Splay has replaced them for free in the past). Does anyone have this issue and see the 2.0 holding up better?
Do you ever go fully barefoot? If not you should give it a go. If you’re used to barefoot shoes you’ll find the transition easier.
@@ChristopherLynchRunWild not while hiking, but outside of that yes. We’re barefoot as often as possible unless what we’re doing requires shoes. What everyone thinks “requires shoes” is probably a little different though 😂🤷🏻♂️
@ you should give it a go while hiking too.
@ when it’s not 30° out we will likely do that. We did some hikes this summer in very minimal sandals so I think we can hack it haha I’d rather do it in that situation just so I don’t have to put dirty feet back in my socks and hiking boots 😂
@ haha. That’s true. Wouldn’t be very nice. I’m challenging myself to go on a barefoot run every day as it gets colder and colder to see how low I can go.
@ please report back 🫡
I think the Splay 101 is probably better as a skate shoe since it is an all leather and suede upper (plus it's very hefty, feels like it'll last a while), whereas this one is mostly canvas, so it will get shredded by grip tape if you do any tricks. Looks nice as a casual shoe though for sure. Splay's vulcanised sole is a bit rigid though compared to most barefoot shoes, with less ground feel too. I think it's probably best to get these if you value width over ground-feel.
Do you guys know if thwre are any toe socks that are 100% cotton or made of 100% wool?
@@carloscueva7492 we just got one in that’s 90% cotton haha not sure if we’ve ever even heard of a 100% cotton toe sock
Lems = disposable shoes
Chris, the suggestions for the loop and the tongue gussets are genius. I actually like heel loops. I think they look cool.
Nice. I have wondered what you two would think about Vivos. Hope you get to the shoes too
Which socks are non-toxic though? Only natural materials and non-gmo vertified materials are non-toxic, using synthetic fibers may be comfortable and warm, but prevents the natural perspiration process of releasing toxins through our feet so the build up of toxins reabsorbs and then synthetics create toxic environment themselves. Natural fiber socks are best.
Hi guys, since you have both the leather and the canvas versions of this shoe is there a difference in weight between the two? I would think the canvas one would be lighter than the leather but since you have them both thought I'd ask. Thanks!
@@krolikoy just put them on the scale, the Nitro are 1oz lighter than the leather. 🤯 Thought it might be more haha
Just the thing i was looking for, love vans/etnies but they are eo cramped.
Wanted to like these because in the barefoot industry, these are truly premium. But i had the same issue with the heel rubbing causing blisters. Has it gotten any better with time? Think it's the mix of a stiff counter and rough suede texture that gives that resistance once you start to sweat. The perfect blister storm 🤣
Yeah that's the conclusion we've come too as well, the stiffener and the suede. We haven't taken them out on a big hike since the one we show in the video because we've got all these other boots we're testing, but I've worn them around quite a bit and it hasn't been an issue at all, it's just on long sustained inclines that it happens.
cheers
😊 how would they do for running and hiking?
@@CarrlosCastaneda running they’ll be ok. They’re very very minimal. Hiking, obviously as long as it’s not too crazy.
How wide is the Jim green toe box? In cm? Why don’t we measure it?
@@claytonlewis7131 it's hard to give an accurate measurement of what you're going to feel on the inside of a shoe unless you cut it in half, and that's not our schtick haha.
1:15 they have info on web site about sole base and thread depth- if you sum it up- it give you stack height, right?
Theoretically! Sometimes brands list out measurements and an overall stack height and it doesn't add up haha. But yeah, those measurements are probably a good reference
I enjoyed this....Thank you.
I went down a size too and it's the best fit i've ever had in a shoe because no restrictions for the toes whatsoever. Only fivefingers has given me this type of comfort.
Owned a few pairs of vivos. Always find their lasts to be too pointy and not wide enough for my feet
