What Luffy lacked when he was a kid? Friends. Yes he was very lonely and always looking for friends to hang out with. He wanted to become a pirate and injured himself, just so he can be with Shanks pirates as a friend. He took a very painful beating just to protect his friendship with Ace and Sabo and said "being alone is more painful than being hurt" So he developed this dream when he was a lone kid that craves for adventures with friends. His final dream is to "be friends with everyone" and he can only manage it by being very famous, very rich and very powerful. It's also so silly, childsh and looks imposible.

I honestly believe if Blackbeard really wanted to he could have dealt with Rayleigh fairly easy but he chose to held his cards. There is a ruthless, brutal monster (serial killer mentality?) inside Blackbeard and we only see shades of it. An old Rayleigh would have revealed those cards so he obviously withdrew.

Luffy calls Zoro Onigashima, then feels it's a bit too much, then Nami calls him Green Kaido and Luffy again feels it's too much, then Chopper calls him Green Mom and Luffy again feels it's not fair. Then Sanji calls him Moss Head, Luffy agrees that it's a fair assessment and now can be freely angry towards Zoro.

At first, I didnt get what Blackbeard has to fear from old man Rayleigh. Strong he might be, but Blackbeard is much more powerful. He is a Yonko with the power of two Devil Fruits. However, his fear might be because he is not free to fight as he wants. If he lets go of Hancock he'll be fighting both of them at once (and she might turn him to stone anyway). If he snaps her neck, his men stay statues. And even Blackbeard cant fight Rayleigh while holding Hancock with one hand. However, there might be a deeper, thematic reason. Blackbeard is steadily portrayed as an immensely powerful but ultimately false King. He looks like a King, he has the powers of a King but its implied his character is not that of a King. The old heavyweights like Whitebeard and Rayleigh dismiss him as illegitimate. Same with Sengoku who called him a punk. They all behave with a strange disprespect before a man who can literally shake mountains. He is also shown to behave cowardly when faced with a man in his own weight class, like Akainu or Rayleigh and he begged when cornered by Whitebeard. Of all the serious contenders he is the only one to show cowardice, despite being arguably the smartest and most powerful. These two themes (his dismissal by the old guard and his own cowardice) might be a way for Oda to tell us that he is not "the man Roger waited for" as Whitebeard would have said. In miners parlance he is depicted as pyrite or "fool's gold". It looks even more shiny than real gold but is ultimately worthless. Blackbeard is portrayed the same. All shiny exterior but poor substance within. As a Blackbeard fan, I despise this but it fits with the series' overall theme.

I love how he can take shit for anyone in the straw hat crew except sanji's he singled him out with that fourth place insult 😂
