    A lot of cast bullet shooters use a piece of fine grain sandpaper mounted on a wood dowel and an electric drill to open those diess up 1 or 2 thousands to get the exact size that they want their bullets to be. You can get your bullets to the 300 diameter with just a little bit of time. Finish it up with a good Polish. You might consider using some Imperial sizing die wax when you size them, too.

    • @AthensArmory303
      @AthensArmory303 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I used Hornady lube, it was very tight, but went smooth. I may try that trick with the sand paper. It should work well for 300 size bullets. It didnt deform at all, no signs of stress except the base where I was pushing, but I chucked it up in a drill and smoothed the base out with a file and sand paper. But it seems to work ok. I really want to make a few and see if they are still accurate, I hope they are

    Nice looking project, you got right there. With a new barrel and a tight chamber, you won't have any of the brass problems that the old military Enfields were known for. There is absolutely no reason that it won't shoot very well. I like that muzzle break, too. if you're dropping it in a provarmint stoc, I'm assuming you're going to scope it. What mount are you going to use?

      Well, as luck would have it, it just fell in my lap. According to the serial number, its an early Michigan Militia rifle. This is all I have for it, but its a good start. The bore is excellent, and bolt is complete except for the extractor. Its unmodified and I plan to keep it that way, but there are some huge challenges. I cant find the baseplate, magazine, mag cut off and ejector. Stocks are entirely unobtanium because the action has no recoil lug and would easily lead to broken stocks. Right now, my plan is to clean up what I have, reblue the action and barrel, and have an extractor made. If I cant find the parts needed, Im thinking about making a target rifle out of it, without permanently modifying anything, allowing me to return it to service condition in the future if possible.

    Very good. It'll be ready to shoot shortly now! I just happen to be working on a Boyds classic pattern stock for a Yugo mauser. I'm converting it to a single shot and installing a red Oak forend tip to contrast with the pepper laminate. I'm removing the sharp edge around the trigger guard area and slimming down the wood around the rear tang of the receiver. Still a lot of metal work to do, but it will eventually be a 220 Swift or maybe a 220 Swift AI. Thanks for sharing, Rat

    Looks good! I use the Devcon a lot, and it's perfect for this application. When I have a loose fit on a naturally finished stock, I use Acra-glass that I can dye to match the wood color. I use Johnsons paste wax for a relaese compound. It's cheap, works good, and cleans up easy. Chet Brown from Brown Precision Stocks showed me that trick when he taught me how to bed fiberglass stocks in the 80s. Thanks for sharing, Rat

    • @AthensArmory303
      @AthensArmory303 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ive never used acraglass. I was shown how to do bedding and the guy used Devcon and thats all I have ever used. The release agent I use is sprayon zinc release agent. Kinda messy, but wipes off easily.

    • @floridagunrat1625
      @floridagunrat1625 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @AthensArmory303 I use the Acra Glass gel rather than the regular Acra Glass. The regular stuff is a little on the runny side. It's virtually the same as Devcon, but it mixes up to a translucent, milky white, which can be dyed to various shades of brown so that it is not too noticeable on a wood stock. I also use it on repairing broken stocks that may have some gaps to fill.

    Also, while you're at it and since you're gonna have to refinish the stock, I suggest rasping a radius for the trigger finger on the side of the action in front of the pistol grip. I like this stock design and have a 1/2 dozen of them. But the sharp edge around the trigger is not comfortable. This is a good time to fix that before you refinish the stock. Rat

    • @AthensArmory303
      @AthensArmory303 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I never thought of that, it is a bit of a harsh edge

  • @floridagunrat1625
    @floridagunrat1625 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

    OK, Since this stock has a painted finish, you can fix the problem with the bottom metal being proud by gluing a piece of wood to the bottom of the stock. No, because the stock has a radius, you can't simply glue it to the existing bottom. But rather you need to mill off a quarter to half inch. And then glue a new piece of wood to the bottom of the stock that you can contour to match the forearm and create a deeper belly in the action area. I have done this about a 1/2 dozen times to various stocks that I have modified to fit actions they were not intended for. You do not need to have a milling machine. I make a simple. U-shaped jig out of pine one by force. That I can mount the stock into and then. Use a use a router to remove the existing radiused area and create a flat plane that you can glue your new wood onto. It takes a little time and attention to detail, but there is little cash outlay. I know i'm having a hard time putting this into words, but trust me, it works! My milling machine is in moth balls and not hooked up at this time. This is a very easy way to get precise cuts with nothing more than a router. I just made a wide heavy target type forum for an Enfield number 4 heavy barrel project that is converted to a single shot. If you want to try it and have questions, let me know. Rat

    • @AthensArmory303
      @AthensArmory303 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am looking at just that, I thought about radiusing the metal so its not a sharp edge, or adding a piece of wood to fill. Its tricky, where the trigger guard is, its flush, but then it steps up at the mag well. I dont have any of those machine tools, but I will do something. Its not terrible, but its not great

    • @AthensArmory303
      @AthensArmory303 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      But first, I have to finish the bedding and make sure the inlet is good to go, before I address the bottom.
