Rain Water Catchment First Flush Diverter Upgrade

This video is showing my DIY upgrade for our Hawaii Homesteads Rain Water Catchment First Flush Diverter System. We are approximately 13 miles as the crow fly's away from the Big Island Volcano Caldara. Homestead maintenance. So as many of you already know having your Homestead fenced is great thing and can be very beneficial. Being in the rainforest / jungle is no different except maybe how labor intense it can be to install a good fence. My neighbor said he was going to start on the one between our properties. I said great what can I do to help. Luckily for me he is the owner of a Fence Comp...

Where do you get your drinking water? Wells or rain?
@@The1313jeff Aloha. For right now we get our drinking water for the most part from what we call the country spigots. There is no real infrastructure, but the country has several areas where they have set up spigots at parks and other areas where they supply spring water or well water for free. Some people take one hundred gallon tanks in there trucks and fill up that way. For me and my family I always have so much to do I let projects go for months and even years before they are completed. I have a seven way $450.00 water purifier with the light still in the box from at one Xmas ago. I'll make a video someday when I hook it up LoL.
@@pelerocks Interesting. I know it rains a lot I thought you could tramp the rain somehow and at least use it for gardens or washing things. I know with a rock ground it had to be tuff. The key to living anywhere comfortably is money. Well, thanks for sharing have a great day!
@@pelerocks Amen I buy stuff and it goes on the back burner until I get a wild hair and do the project!
@@The1313jeff I do catch rain water for washing dishes, showers and the like. We had a 450 gallon tank that was plenty for many years then we upgraded our life and got a clothes washer. At that point we upgraded to a 1500 gallon water tank, all is good here now.

Mahalo. For Subscribing
Exactly like my Deere! Love the thing but i only wish it had a blade that adjusted one side up and down. When i need to make a level area for a car, i use my large landscape bucket, dig down several feet against the hill side, pull out level section of dirt, move over repeat, until i have a nice level area against the side of the hill the excavator can drive on to use the blade for a level surface to drive or park on! If i need to get a wider pad, i start on my new level, surface and then dig down 6-10" and push that dirt off to the right side and visa versa. When finishing the leveling, i normally will go to far end, drop the blade and slowly back up,leveling as i go while watching the dirt build up behind the blade, works for me!! I get a ton of things done with it which includes lifting heavy objects, moving old cars around, dogging up smaller tree trunks, trenching for water electrical and much more away from home! BTW, doesn't look very dusty where you are but i kept getting the red light and buzzer when operating in the 95-102 degree weather! Kept the air filter clean and finally it was suggested the radiator could be blocked! Inspecting it looked just fine but when i used my air nozzle, the dust that came out for a good half hour was amazing, after that I used my water hose nozzle and sprayed until there was zero sign of brown water still coming down from above! Used it for several hours in a row the next day in the heat and no red light! I now use the water nozzle before i start working every day!🎉
@@steelman86 my temperature only get to around 80°. I still get the warning occasionally, I think it is from the floral dander. I work away from home a lot so I have to let it cool down for a while then I finish up and use air compressor also. I'll try the water method before taking to job sites and see if it helps me out. Yes it is a great piece of equipment.
What brand hammer is that ?
@@monkey841000 The name printed on the hammer is: Striker Hydraulic Braker, model TMB-4M, Manufacturer Toku America Inc in OH, USA It even came with it's own small tool kit. Thank you for the inquiry
700 hundred hours for the tracks? Damn that's sh!tty.
Aloha. Yes I agree with you that the tracks failed fairly early. There are a few things to consider though, first is that I'm mostly using the excavator on Lava Rock and second that i most likely could have gotten more hours out of them. I chose not to take any chances in regards to losing a track in an area that would be too far in the jungle to get to easily. These tracks are not light by any means. Mahalo (Thank you) for commenting
What size buckets do you have? 12 and a 24?
Currently I have 3 buckets. The bucket that I use mostly is 34" with no teeth. The other 2 buckets have teeth one is a 24" & the other is a 12". The work that is intended should dictate the type & size to use. Personal preference is also a factor to consider when purchasing. Hopefully this will be helpful. Please remember that I work in areas that are mostly undisturbed lava flow. So a bucket with teeth is not always needed. Thank you for the question and for commenting.
I just built a shed and put on metal roofing so I can catch the rain. I plan to use it for my flower garden. I will probably use the square totes that are 250 gallons and link 4 of them up in a row.
Aloha. That sounds like a great idea. 1000 SQ ft of roof 1 inch of rain equals 600 gallons of water captured. The price for a totes here is basically $1.00 per gallon in size and they are hard to come by.. For the first flush for the same roof size as described above is 10 gallons is needed for basic clean. A 3" pipe by 3 feet equals 1 gallon. Best of luck with the math LoL. Thank you for your support.
Are steel tracks available?
I'm unsure but I believe that they are. I just changed out my tracks by myself at 850 hours. My sales rep told me to expect my tracks to need to be changed at 700 hours here in Hawaii due to the lava. I hope to do my video editing for that clip in the morning.
You could tracks way cheaper from track dealers. Pape marks them up so much.
Thank you for the recommendation. I will definitely be looking for a better price next time around.
Damn that Yanmar engine is quiet!
I love that, "kids say no to drugs"!
Car was a '82-85 Honda Accord LX, if I'm not mistaken. Cheers, from New Hampshire.
Thank you for commenting. I only new it was a Honda from the steering wheel emblem.
Looks like a transformer lost the battle. LOL
Saltwater eats everything sooner or later here.
Sausage, bacon, etc
That is a great idea, it has only one flaw right now and that is that my friend that does my butchering is on the mainland for another week. I do already have a partial share in the neighborhood pig trap so that part is covered. Thank you for your comment.
S Love your attitude man you have to go withe the flow.
Thank you for commenting. I am planning to leave a lot of the hedge area alone because the pigs will be back. They have a tendency to return to the sean of the crime lol. Also going to let the Aina do what it wants to repair itself.
What’s a guy to do? Maybe a 223? Sorta like the raccoons to some degree
Lots of freezers in the neighborhood are full now, and lots more bore's, wild pigs still on the hoof right now. Earlier in the month of May I counted groups of 12 or more, two adults three or four juveniles and six or so piglets on more than one access road coming into the homestead. This is the most I have seen in my 6 years here at the homestead.
Hey Norm how deep you think that pond will be 1-2 feet? the city of Belevue wouldnt like your erosion control-lol
Aloha Dave, When it's raining a lot at one time I could be getting as much as 5,000 gallons an hour coming down my Trench. I can divert it directly into the pond. If I get the back wall of the pond sealed it will make the pond close to 3 or 4 feet deep in/at the lowest point.
Where is your fold up wooden ruler to measure- lol
Aloha Most of the time I use a lighter for my measurements but... I am now at almost 12 weeks without tobacco products. So my daily check list doesn't have a lighter anymore. I guess I will have to break out the trustee fold up wooden ruler again just like back in my old inspection days.. LoL
There’s gotta be a concrete slab for the bottom of the pond?
Yes that is correct. I was in four of the five ponds with the excavator. The fifth pond was the one at the end of the video that we were fishing in. I thought it was going to be too deep to try and do any cleaning so fishing instead.
What do you do with the rock now
LoL I try to bury them if the owner wants them gone. This time I ended up leaving a lot on the hillside so the owner can make a planter or two later.
For what I would give to have you and your equipment here on our little 10 acres. You seem to enjoy the work that you're doing and it shows. I sure miss you
Aloha yes I have been enjoying myself lately. I just had the phone company out to fix my connection. I'll be able to start uploading more videos as I get the time. I now have a faster upload speed LoL
I guess u Will seehow long it stays a pond when it quit raining ,But it would be pretty cool if it stayed ,
Thank you Mark. I will be hoping for the best. The base is all smooth lava and I should be able to set block around the edges and then put a light coat of cement slurry over the lava.
