HOW I MADE A 40 YARD #GOLF DRIVING RANGE THAT GAVE ME A SCRATCH HANDICAP #golftips #backyard
The golf course near my home was sold and turned into a subdivision, and it's over 20 miles to my #golf course, so I decided to create a practice driving range in a small space to work on my #golfswing. I needed a way to practice iron shots, #wedges , #chipping , and even #putting, so I bought some supplies and went to work. Daily practice on my homemade driving range every day when I'm not going to the golf course, has lowered my handicap to scratch from the senior tees, when it used to be close to 10. Total cost was only about $400, and I only needed about 40 yards of open space.

So many gardeners in the USA don't grow TARO and it's one of the easiest plants to grow and you get a very nice yield of edible leaves, stems, and roots. TARO is a very healthful plant, and you get lots of good carbs, vitamins, anti-oxidants, twice the fiber of potatoes, and much more. In this video I show how I harvest and collect the roots (corms) and how I prepare mashed TARO for dinner.

HOW TO PLANT A FALL GARDEN WITH "RAISED BEDS" IN A REGULAR GARDEN
มุมมอง 3282 หลายเดือนก่อน
Mounding your rows into a "raised bed" format works great to grow fall and winter vegetable and greens. It's not as good for spring and summer gardens because the mounds of soil will dry out fast and will need constant watering. The dirt mounds allow the roots of plants with shallow roots such as radishes, lettuce, leafy greens, etc. to easily go down into the soil and produce sturdy plants. In...

Actually from the senior tees, I have a negative handicap. Practice makes perfect.
@@TheBackGardenYard I believe you! I see older guys all the time who can hit it straight - then have a great short game to finish off each hole. Respect :)

Keep it up young man!
Thank you, and thanks for watching.
Nice setup. I'd don't have the room at my place. Currently making do with Golf+ on the Quest 3.
I'm not sure what Golf+ is, but we have to work with whatever we have... Thanks for the comment.

@@TheBackGardenYard oh yes, for sure. Here in the UK, in southern England, a nearby village to me got 18 minutes of sunshine over a two-week period, and it was grey, really grey.
Can I use pure ammonium nitrate from tannerite? Serious question
I don't know why you would do that. It's way more expensive that a bag of ammonium nitrate, and likely you might burn your plants. But good question.
@@TheBackGardenYard I’m experimenting right now with the baby plants growing in my kitchen over the winter. Extremely super hot peppers and a variety of tobacco plants.
@@Jeff1Veron Ok, let me know how this works out. My experience with indoor vegetable plants is that they get very leggy and weak, then go into shock when I finally transplant them outdoors in the spring. Of course good grow lights could help the indoor grow, imo.
@ I have my plants in the kitchen windows and they are also under some full spectrum LED lights that are pretty bright. I put a few granules of tannerite on a few of my plants (only on the soil) before watering them. So far they are still alive!!
Impressive. Be lucky if i could strike golf ball with boat oar
Thank you. After 60 years of playing golf, I can hit it a little, lol
I don’t know anything about golf but that measuring tool is pretty cool.
Yea, the laser distance "shooter" is probably the best invention in golf since the "metal woods". The accuracy is within a yard or two and it takes the guesswork out of distance, especially on a new golf course. I play in a couple of "super senior" competition leagues, and with the garden and the yard, it keeps me totally active in my retirement years... Thanks for the comment and have a blessed and HAPPY THANKSGIVING.
Beautiful and delicious shiitake, great harvest, thank you for sharing!

Thanks a million for your wonderful videos ❤
So nice of you
Thank you....I don't know how I missed it. 😊😊
Can you tell me when you planted your fall garden. I'm trying to learn and tired of wasted plants and water.
Yes, I released my fall garden video today. Planted on Sept. 1st - and have been harvesting for over a month now. Here's the link th-cam.com/video/5fp1Wv3J4aQ/w-d-xo.html
Last year was my first real attempt at doing a fall/winter garden, outside of planting out garlic. I was pleased with the overall results, and I'm trying it again this year. It's a tiny garden compared to yours, but looks like it's going to be another good year for some fall kale! 🙂
Yes, I have another garden in the back of the fruit trees section of the yard and have kale and more lettuce and a second crop of bok choi planted there. I didn't show that section in the video because I wanted to keep the time down. Glad to hear you are doing the fall garden, as so many folks seem to give up their gardens in August - September it seems.
Wow! Truly amazing, that white butterfly won't let me grow leafy green vegetables
Yea, I'm luckly that with the warm weather, my greens are worm free. However, there are some worms or slugs eating on my cabbage- Hopefully this cold spell we will have this weekend will slow them down.

I've got onions I started from seeds and I'm going to be planting at the end of the month it's not a little bit sooner I have grown two batches of mustard greens and they're really nice and my kohlrabi has turned out great here in North Texas
I really like mustard greens. I like to cook them with some smoked pork, then sop the juice up with freshly made cornbread. Yum. Thanks for watching.
@@TheBackGardenYard oh yes me also
I need to get some Florida Broadleaf mustard's because mine keep bolting in the seedling stage. I'm still going to harvest it and give the stems to my chickens. But I love mustard greens but our hot/cold weather doesn't like it.
I understand because just looking at my mustard greens, I can see they are only about 1 more unusually warm week away from bolting also. Hopefully the cold weather predicted for late this week will slow them down, and next Wednesday, I can harvest most of them for Thanksgiving. I used to grow the curly mustard, but way too much problems with worms hiding in the curly leaves, so I just grow the broadleaf kind now. They are very common, so you should be able to find seeds easily.
My back garden is still alive ,Nov 19th, that a record for me ,central Indiana.
Great to hear. We are going to have a frost Thursday or Friday, so my peppers and tomatoes will finally be gone. I've never had them this late either.
Thank you for your video and showing us how to use the ammonia sulphate. The best thing about your video is that you actually showed how to apply and the results from a applying and the when and when not to apply. Your video is so detailed and full of knowledge . I have learnt so much with this video, watching from New Zealand, Rotorua. As a new beginnerni woukdnof thrown it on everything., But your video has taught me a great lesson. I always wondered why my cucumber plants didn't grow. Cheers. 🍉🥒🥦🥬
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I believe the improper use of fertilizers is probably the #1 cause of folks posting they get plants, but not a harvest of squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. Over the years I have learned from experience mostly when and how much to apply and I want to share this knowledge through the channel. Good luck with your future crops.
Without telling us the ph and EC, that experiment doesn't provide much beyond anecdotal evidence. For example, when I mix 1/3 black kow in a potting mix, it registers well over 4 EC, that's over 2000 ppms. There's no way a seed is going to do well in that much salt. I start my seeds around 200 ppm, 1/10 of what you will get at 33% black kow.
Ok - I know many people who use the manure mixtures in much higher concentrations, and I know very few who are measuring ph and EC, so my video was directed at those that use these compost mixtures in higher concentrations. No problem...
It's good to cover it up to so it doesn't splash on the plant...
You are right, only a few minutes and it will burn holes in the leaves of plant. I try to knock it off the leaves if I see I have splashed it on. Thanks for the tip.
Great harvest! 💚💚I garden in northwest GA and I hear you on how unseasonably warm and dry it’s been…spring again I guess but frost is coming eventually ofcourse
Thank you - I am about to do a video on my fall garden instead of the quick look I gave in the lima bean video. I can't believe people don't plant fall gardens...
@ i look forward to seeing it!! Absolutely, especially this fall, what a great year to grow!!
best video on YT explaining how to harvest taro properly! To make a sweet dish, mash with boiled purple sweet potato and pour sweetened coconut cream over the top! Delish!
Thank you! The sweet potato and Taro combo with coconut cream sounds great. I'll give it a try.
Lovely harvest.
Thank you, I'm still loving this extended fall.
It's crazy, I'm in a different zone than you and my Mustard greens is trying to bolt already. I'm going to harvest them and plant them again.
Yes, I already had some lettuce bolt, and I'm very worried my mustard greens are going to bolt before Thanksgiving. Cooler weather moving in starting tomorrow, so we will see.
What a great late harvest! What variety are those?
Just like my okra, I'm using seeds that were given to my brother from an old timer farmer who has now passed away. I save the seeds every year, so unfortunately I don't know what variety they are, just climbing lima beans...
It’s so frustrating when something like a creature eats. Your vegetables are your hard and work so this summer and late summer I was doing so well with my Kari melons every year. I sell safe seeds so the melons are from my seeds stock and they are prolific I get a lot of melons but this year I’m pretty sure it was a possum. Something was grabbing, the melons and I had them on the trellis and he was eating them and I was trying to beat him or it from getting them and I picked a few but he got about three of my melons (possums)
Yes, it's very frustrating to have animals invade and destroy. I built a 7 ft fence around my back yard because of the deer, but I also see coon and possum tracks in the wet soil at times, and my ripe tomatoes get attacked by many animals - squirrels and chipmunks - but I just try to grow enough to get harvests despite the animals, lol.
Looks Great !!!
Thank you
Yes, you are so correct. I am in Houston Texas and I still have tomatoes coming along. I still have green peppers jalapeño my loofah is still going crazy. I’m getting I saw two more loofahs coming out and they’re growing pretty good. We’ve had a couple of days of rain, things are just popping in the garden. I’m happy. I’m still not successful with any squash cause that I just never have been. I tried. It’s not happening.
And just as I post this, lows are expected the next two days around 40 degrees which will likely end the tomatoes and peppers. But I'll still have the greens and lettuce until we get an ice storm so I love the climate here. Thanks for the comment.
When did you plant the beans?😊😊
They were planted in late April - And didn't start producing until July, but have been steady since.
@@TheBackGardenYard Thank You!
theres nothing as delicious as fresh picked lima beans!!
You bet cha! We cooked all of them and only could eat about half of them for dinner. Loving this extended fall we are having this year. Thanks for watching
Mix it...black cow, countryside, mushroom compost, peat moss OR coconut core AND vermiculite. GREAT mix and more economical.
I'm switching to 100% chicken manure compost this year, as I am now believing those that say the cow manure products may contain herbicide residue from cows grazing treated pastures. I got some terrible results from my green bean and pole beans sprouting the past couple of years, and I believe the herbicide was the culprit.
If you only want boiled, rinse thoroughly with peel and boil, easy to peel off that.
Yes, the smaller corms are very easy to peel after boiling, but the large ones still need to be cut and sized for boiling. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
I wish I could find these in the store. I can't eat potatoes they make my arthritis hurt. I leave to far north to grow them.
Maybe do a google search for some of the online sellers and call them and ask if they ship to your location.
They have them at Asian store, especially Filipino store.
Taro in Georgia??? LOL I like it. Though, I automatically wonder how it integrates into Southern cuisine? (Country fried taro? Taro peach cobbler? Taro and grits? Georgia-style poi??) This is great!
LOL - yea, Georgia poi - that's the ticket... Since we grow cabbage for kimchi, you can imagine my house is not strictly southern cuisine... Thanks for the comment!
Colocasia esculenta (elephant ears) can also be eaten.
Maybe if cooked enough, but I would be very very careful with them after what I have read about people eating them.
my taro leaves have black stems can they be eaten
If it's real Taro, the answer is yes. There are many varieties of Taro and some have black stems. There are also many varieties of Elephant Ear also, so be careful. Here is an article that shows you how to tell the difference. If your Taro is making nice corms, and the leaves look like the Taro in the picture in this article, then it's probably safe to eat the leaves. NEVER eat any Taro raw though, as there is oxalic acid in the plant that will be neutralized by boiling or baking. Here's the link www.mauijungalow.com/2012/03/taro-vs-elephant-ear-telling-them-apart.html
I have be struggling with sweet potatoes for years. I saw in your first video on how to get slips. I am excited for mine to grow. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Your videos reminds me of my grandma, passing down her wisdom to me. Thank you!
Thank you for that statement. That's the main reason I am making these videos, as I see so many folks these days struggling to make a garden, spending way too much money on supplies, and really, you just need a sunny spot, some fertilizer and a little luck.
I need to find some to taste them.
Check any Asian markets in your area. Costco also had Fuyu persimmons, but not the Kaki.
Will this grow in any climate? Do you need to cure the ones you keep for longer storage? I always learn something new from you as I've never heard of this before! Thanks for the video.
I think you could grow them in zones 5 through 9 in USA, especially if you wait until near the last frost to plant. However, they probably won't produce as big with a shorter growing season, but you could still get a crop, imo.
Wow I need to grow this next year. We add them to soups in the Philippines.
Yes, TARO is a staple on many Pacific islands.
Great video, very informative!!💚
Thanks for watching - I am glad you enjoyed the video.
I`m adding this to my Louisiana garden. I have major problems with potatoes here. Each time I plant them we have a flood that rots them or bugs attack them and I`m trying to find foods I can grow without poisoning everything with pesticides.
You will absolutely love TARO - it thrives in moist to wet soil, is pest resistant, and super easy to grow. Find some edible corms (taro roots) in your local Asian market or order them online. Go ahead and plant them now, at least 4 inches deep if you have a cold winter, and just watch for them to appear next spring.
@@TheBackGardenYard I found some Taro tubers online but nearly everything I order is some sort of bait and switch like my latest fig trees. What kind of fig tree was the one in your yard with the leaves with long fingers? I ordered 4 Celeste fig trees and all of them have long fingered leaves on one branch and spade shaped leaves on others. They haven`t fruited yet but I think they might be Black Mission or Violette de Bordeaux fig trees. I think Magnolia figs have long fingered leaves too.
@@baneverything5580 My wife bought the fig trees at a local nursery and I'm sorry, I don't know the name. They make a medium sized fig. We had a large golden fig tree, but the insects always get inside the bloom ends of the figs as they ripen, so we cut it down.
These are very good sliced thin and fried like potato chips.
Thanks for that tip, I was wondering if I could make some kind of "french fry" from them? I have fried leftover mashed taro for a breakfast addition and it came out very tasty.
Is there a follow on vid to this one to show them running in the greenhouse plz?

Good after sir. I am always sad when I have to pull my tomato plants at end end of season. I still have some indeterminate plants and I'm still pulling tomatoes off of it. I live in Southeast Texas so today it's in the mid '70s and rainy. I can see My tomato plants are about played out. I am looking forward to my winter harvest and planting seeds in February for the summer. I'm a new subscriber and I enjoy listening to you
Yes, It's been in the 80's and 70's here still and it's November! I'm still pulling a few tomatoes off the cloned tomato vines I showed. Yes, I always know when I take my vines down that I'll be eating very few tomatoes again until June, except, I have a lot of frozen tomatoes in the freezer which will keep me in soups and sauces. Every now and then I thaw some frozen ones and eat with just salt and pepper... Not the same, but still delicious.
Thank you for sharing your experiences growing sweet potatoes!
You are welcome, and thank you for watching.
Here in Central Texas we have lots of wild persimmon trees. The fruit is smaller - about the size of a wild plum. They are dark purple and ripen in September. They contain about as many seeds as they do pulp. Wildlife love them.
Yes, we have wild persimmons here in Georgia also. They have to get so soft they fall off the tree in order to eat them, but they actually taste great if you can find them just right. Deer love them and will come clean up the fallen fruit every night.
