D&D Alignment | Dungeons & Dragons | Forbidden Lands Coup De Grace
In discussing options for alignment and morality within Dungeons & Dragons and similar roleplaying games, let's have a look at how The Forbidden Lands from Free League handles the Coup De Grace. How one must struggle with their own morality, their own humanity...mechanically within the game.

Dungeons & Dragons & Alignment : Where it Falls Short
มุมมอง 1921 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
The concept of alignment in Dungeons and Dragons has been around since the beginning. And, narratively, thematically, system-wise, it makes a lot of sense, but it also leaves a lot to be desired. It broadly defines terms and then struggles with trying to adhere to its own definitions and wants to lay it at the players feet to figure out, but the reality is that there is too much room for debate...

High Success Rates & Improving Characters in Dungeons & Dragons and Other TTRPGs

@mavhatterlaboratories made a video not too long ago regarding success rates in TTRPGs and how higher success rates are actually a lot more fun. I don't disagree, but the theory of how that works in conjunction with mechanically improving a character over an extended period of time, in a prolonged campaign, how those two work together.
Prime Stat in Dungeons & Dragons

In tabletop roleplaying games especially those more focused on tactical combat and skirmish rules should allow characters to focus on and shine in different areas. The upcoming TTRPG from @TheDungeonCoach when I last looked had a PRIME STAT which allowed characters who did not excel at combat to....well....excel at combat. At first, I thought it was a really neat idea. Then, I realized why for ...

One of the things I really enjoy is testing out new tabletop roleplaying game systems by creating different characters from different media and genres in those systems. It showcases what the systems do well, but also shows where the systems' limitations are. Here, I took the popular Marvel Comics X-Men character, Wolverine and created a starting character in the Fabula Ultima JTTRPG roleplaying...

I always thought Palladium alignments were done the best. But typically I don't even use alignments in my games, if it's not needed.
I agree on both counts! I also really like how Humanity / Paths were handled in Vampire the Masquerade--that was, for the most part, alignment.
I like the idea of Forbidden Lands CDG. It puts the steering wheel in the character's hand (briefly), instead of the player's. And I think this was why many players (back in the day) chose a Chaotic Neutral alignment. The Fate rpg has a mechanic called "Compels". It's a fun way the GM can have players deal with their character's life choices, basically. It could be morality, faction, relationships, etc.
Oh yes, I love compels and the bargains from PbtA/ Dungeon World. The other thing it reminds me of is something often not referred to as alignment, but the Humanity and Paths from World of Darkness's Vampire the Masquerade.
Well said! New subscriber!
Thanks I appreciate it. Sometimes it takes time. Sometimes YT is just goofy
Good video. Gave it thumbs up and it's not counting.

What is the Palladium alignment system?
for some reason, my comments weren't alerting me, sorry for the delay. This video actually includes examples of the Palladium alignments.
@@geeksgambitgaming I still don't really know what Palladium even is.
@@Blurns Now that is a very different question indeed. Palladium is just another TTRPG system, like GURPS, Savage Worlds, Rolemaster, etc. Dungeons & Dragons may be the most popular roleplaying game in the world, like Google is the most popular search engine, but in both cases, there are other options. Palladium is the publisher and makes use of a universal system for all of their games--games that include Palladium Fantasy, Heroes Unlimited, Ninjas & Superspies, Beyond the Supernatural, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness, Robotech--and, their most popular, RIFTS.
Extremely well said my friend ❤❤ it’s going to be a new world but not for everyone. I’ll always hope people are inheritantly not terrible to their core, just would be nice to see it more often.
Yup. Often seems to be hoping against hope.
I did something like this a few times The wand of .50 AE Or the penance stare all good stuff
They were one-off custom spells? Or just custom spells you created for D&D?
Full blown spells created by yours truly (the math on the penance stare spell is weird)
Yeah, this here is specifically about coming up with them (typically more as a player) on the fly, quickly from turn to turn. True spontaneous casting.
Love this game. I have never seen a more beautiful book.
Yeah I definitely gotta pick up Vol. 2
Thanks for helping me straighten it out and get the right onw uploaded @deancasett1083
I do a thing where I throw the players into a nightmare, and pull out a completely different game, mostly to keep my veteran players on their toes. This year I'm doing a Morkborg nightmare
sounds like something i would do, but my buddy...not so much
@@geeksgambitgaming aNother thing I did was to have a "Call of Duty" style endless wave system, (it wasn't endless) but the idea was let the players were in an area like a town, with hordes of enemies approaching, if they succeeded I gave them a reward when we return to our normal session, they all started at a preset level, and experience they got for killing enemies was used directly to purchase either weapons or buffs or open up new areas.
This is actually a pretty neat idea I should consider for something else I have in mind.
This game defenitely needs more exposure! It's an absolute blast to play, never had more fun with a TTRPG. Btw. the auto-subtitles didn't quite catch dreaded horrors :-D

@geeksgambitgaming lol yeah I got that when I hit play for the last 8 seconds when you said gaming platform 🤣 I jumped the gun on the response As far as games go, I have been waiting more than 20 years for Legends of the Dragoon 2, and there's no light at the end of that tunnel.
*shrug* not sure.... it's there at the top and a few times throughout, mentions specifically TTRPG. The Legends of Dragoon 2 VG I am pretty sure will come out long after I'm buried. For an RPG setting, it is interesting that I don't hear more people talk about it, but there are a number of systems that would handle it pretty well.
One of my favorite characters was a 3E Shadowrun Ork Street Samurai. It was my first time playing it so I scoffed at the Lifestyle part of chargen. She was a socialite and club-goer. Whatever money she didn't spend on bullets and chrome went to clothes and makeup.
That actually sounds like a really cool character remind me of my second Ed street Sam elf club hopping all the time super stylish allergic to pretty much everything

I would look into plug-ins for Foundry. I can't remember exactly everythung that was used, but there are things like turn indicators, as well as a way to integrate 5etools into Foundry. Think there are lots of potential options for different features, but it will just take some elbow grease to set up
The running reply so far is....if you think roll20 was a paid, walk don't run from Foundry. Here's my dilemma. I am a tech by nature and by trade. But, I spend a LOT of time working and don't want to make the tech of the game a second job. I'd rather have fun playing and running the game. I tried out things like campfire and world anvil and cancelled them both, because Google Drive already gave me what I needed there. In theory, I could just throw up a crummy whiteboard and dragged layered pogs around for virtual play, I know. I'm wondering though if, since FG and Foundry are the same cost now if FG isn't worth the added effort with more time in development and a wider/deeper library and doesn't /seem/ to have more complex setup issue potential.
Now you've got me thinking how I'd set it up...
mission accomplished!
GURPS would be a good choice. But here's one to consider... I'm in a Scum & Villany campaign and we are really enjoying the system. It's bad of the ... Blades in the Dark was the first one, I think. Load of fun, though, and really cinematic. You'd likely have to build the "setting hack" for it, but that shouldn't take too much. Check it out!
yeah i could do a setting hack, but not sure how any of the blades games would handle two worlds in one...
@@geeksgambitgaming essentially, your idea is run a "real world" character and a "digital avatar" character? We did a multi-session "flashback" adventure of our younger selves where we used a different playback for our youth selves. Having "flesh" and "digital" playboys is a simple fix...
@@OutlandStation not necessarily. That seems to be the “easy” fix but it doesn’t have to be and preferably wouldn’t be.
@@geeksgambitgaming so you are wanting to use the same stats for both instances of a character?
@@OutlandStation I’d like to see it handled at least. I don’t want two character sheets. I’m reminded of a FATE game that had the character but when in their armored form they had XYZ mods and I forgot about it until now but something like that might work. At the same time two character sheets may work. To be fair nothing I plan on running any time soon. More of a thought exercise. I love seeing how different people handle different things with different systems.
That would be fun lol.
I know one of my friends is already planning to play one starting this week
Gurps probably the best but you'll have to use two character sheets for it
oh man, i dunno if I didn't think of this one or was blocking it out on purpose.
In pf1. A paladin of shaylin; godess of love family & marrage; was invited to a arranged marriage between to houses. Further on in the scene we find out the bride had been kidnapped and was taken to the shore. We fight the kidnapper and find out, one the bride has a twin that was going to take the brides place once they got away, and two the kidnapper is the person she really loves. My Palay can't handle this, cast Zone Of Truth; force truth spell; and forcefully interrogates the bride and lover. Finding only truth, gives them his own ring and "By the power vested in me by the godess Shaylin. I pronounce you husband and wife." Yes, I took over this maybe 30-40 and made it 90 of role-playing epicness. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
that's awesome!
Hack100 is a great d100 universal game that is simple and brilliant. 36 pages of "okay, im good to go".
Hmmm...I'll have to check that out. I am definitely used to more crunch with d100 pages than what could fit in 36 pages, but maybe that's the genius I didn't know I needed.

All I wanna know is - when are we playing Cam?
that is a REALLY good question. The campaign I most want to run is going to take some time. I might just have to run something premade while I tinker with my idea in the background. Hit me up some time and we'll see.
I've been curious about that for awhile myself. All I'd really be looking for is if it makes 5e combat more interesting.
I've been digging in more and more and it definitely seems it does, but the trade off is that it could also be potentially a /little/ more tactical/complex. But the base is still the same, just more options, really and that's what I wanted anyhow.

Jesus, i am so tired of late century liberal takes. "Did you know that women are superior? In everything? Boy, men are stupid." Hard math is to keep tourists away. Go play F.A.T.A.L. its bound to be your favorite system.
Explain how THAC0 was ever a good idea. I haven't heard it called a gatekeeping device against women before, but I have seen it keep _plenty_ of males away.
That was actually the point: whoever thought it could be used as a gatekeeping device--whether for it or against it--not the brightest. I never said it was better. I, for one, was happy to see it go. But, it was better than what came before. Now, why was it better? Before it was all referencing charts--various charts based on class, level, specific monsters, etc. The math was relatively straight forward, but it frustrated folk enough that they went back to using a chart (based on the new math). Interestingly, it was around for a very long time--longer than most realize initially seeing use in 81 or 82, I believe in modules and articles. Some say it was an in-house design tool used in building monsters and kind of got leaked out and caught on.
The most ancient d&d book I’d ever seen
Never forget when someone brought an original wood box to shop. Unfortunately, not for sale, but so cool to hold one in my hands.
You could check out year zero engine from free league rhey have an open licence and lot of game settings that use that dicepool system.
