The groundbreaking Apollo Saxophone Quartet has been at the forefront of the British contemporary music scene for over 30 years. The ensemble has made the largest single contribution to the saxophone quartet repertoire in the UK, commissioning and premiering over 120 works, ranging from quartets to concerti and film scores, as well as numerous creative collaborations with poet, dancers, multimedia and strings.

As the Apollo Saxophone Quartet approaches its 40th anniversary, 2023 sees the release of a new album of specially commissioned works by some simply stunning composers. These six new works were premiered at the Anthony Burgess Center in Manchester on November 5th 2022 and form the core of the quartet's program for the 2023-24 season.

Calheta - for saxophone quartet

Calheta by Andy Scott, was written for the Apollo Saxophone Quartet in 2021. The music uses multiphonic effects (using alternative fingerings to split notes and cause rapid flucuations between two or more pitches) and uses some of the quarter tone tuning derived from these multiphonics in the melodic material.
Partial - for saxophones and electronics

Written for the ASQ by Carl Raven, Partial layers the live saxophone quartet on top of a drone track produced form electronically manipulated saxophone samples. The four saxophone players use a variety of false fingerings to produce the upper register notes from the lowest fundamentals.

Footage taken from the 2015 RNCM Saxophone Day. Visaya was written for the Apollo Saxophone Quartet in 2000 by the Sri Lankan-Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne. It is a highly energetic piece exploring the many tonal facets of the saxophone.
