S2 Ep. 10- New Music Seminar MC Battle For World Supremacy Part 2: 1993 + 1994 |...
In part two of New Music Seminar MC Battle For World Supremacy, our last episode for season 2, we focus on the years; 1993 and 1994!
I recount the stories I heard about 1993 with MF Grimm, Mad Skillz, and the ’93 champion, Supernatural.
As for ’94, I explain how my writing for local Chicago publication The Flypaper, created a lane for me to have some “involvement” and a front-row seat to many of the key happenings at the seminar that year, including getting a chance to interview Bobbito Garcia, The Artifacts, Count Bass D, Hard 2 Obtain, Zev Love X, and Muddbones (Cage and Masai Bey) for an article in The Flypaper, which never came out, and ultimately inspired Caught In The Middle magazine, that I started planning with J-bird only weeks after the seminar. And, I share the memories of being at a showcase that had Indigenous Theory, Keith Murray, Rampage The Last Boy Scout, Notorious B.I.G, Craig Mack, and Original Flavor with Jay-Z. Plus, some insight on the actual MC battle itself, which was won by Judgemental from Chicago, who I was in town with. It’s an action-packed episode!!

มุมมอง 18210 หลายเดือนก่อน
From approximately 1985 until 1994, the New Music Seminar MC Battle For World Supremacy was one of the most exciting and inspiring things for an upcoming MC, especially those whose styles were battle-ready, myself included. Ultimately, this two-part episode is about how I went from an aspiring MC hoping to compete in the contest one day, which I never achieved but did find myself in the audienc...

From 1995-2002, I hosted/produced Time Travel Radio on WNUR FM in Evanston/Chicago. One part of the show was regularly doing theme shows telling the history of various artists. In 1996, I did a spotlight show on The Jaz (a.k.a Big Jaz, Jaz-O) and his partner Jay-Z. Then, a year later, as he was promoting his second solo album, I did a Time Travel radio spotlight show on Jay-Z. I was able to int...

The Jaz and Jay-Z are certainly each worthy of their own stories being told, but one of my favorite things is peeling back the layers of how various stories tie things together, and that's the adventure we begin here, in this two-part special that touches not only on the history of The Jaz and Jay-Z, but touches on some other key stories along the way, including moments with Fresh Gordon, UTFO,...

I was lucky enough to do street promotions in Chicago for Sha-Key's debut album, produced largely by Earl Blaize, as I was, and remain a big fan of that album, "A Head Naddas Journey To Aidi Skizm" ('94). This is the story of that record, including input given to me from Sha-key and Earl Blaize to help fill in some gaps. it talks about her being signed to Imago Records, and what went wrong, as ...

From doing street promotions in Chicago for Wildpitch Records in the mid-90s, I got to work with some of my favorite artists of the time, and of all-time in some cases; including Ultramagnetic MCs, UMC's, Main Source, O.C., and The Coup. This episode talks about my work with Wild Pitch, focusing on the first two albums by The Coup, and goes into detail about a few other connections and interact...

Ice thought about this before, crazy to hear him explain it out like that.
i recorded two tracks with Pete at green street !!! great times
Without a doubt, a true hip hop legend: MF DOOM. Also, Ramellzee and Kool Keith who I believe to be MF Doom’s spiritual kinfolk. Authentic metropolitan New York flavor.
Wish it was still on Spotify. I got the cd tho.
Cage is one of the greatest ever. Yall need to talk to him one day. His story is insane. From childhood to signing to dropped to comeback/em beef to def jux. Subroc camu tao tame one doom. Cage worked with the best.
I like them both... But separate... Zach doesn't fit their sound
Tribe Unique and Abstract Rudes paint was a spiritual awakening for me.
Was getting back into RTJ for the first time in years and quit my job the same day. Shit was stressing me out! My boss didn’t want the best for me, they delayed paychecks, and it was a temp job so who cares? It’s not just RTJ making music to give you the power to stand against abuse. I can think of Denzel curry, jpegmafia, baby keem, all these artists have aggressive shit that puts me in this mind frame. but it is crazy how El is saying exactly what happened a few days ago.
I used to smoke a lot of weed I still do but I used to
Great knowledge! Thank you for this. I'm a huge L.O.N.S. fan and I learned so much from this interview.
Cipher OVER 😅😅
"Elohim ...With The Rhyme Scheme...Lyrics Hit The Mic Reminds Me Of Light Beams" - Cannibal Ox "Stress Rap" off "Cold Vein" Best underground hip hop album in early 2000's... 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Iam a french canadian, and I usualy dont understand half the lyrics of El-P or Vast Air or Aesop Rock or Camu Tao ... but I dont care, its music to my ears anyway.
this podcast is fire. since common dropped the album with Pete rock, it made me look into Pete rocks catalog with cl smooth and I became the biggest fan and was trying to figure out what happened with them so I was happy y'all talked about that. and I look forward to watching the rest of the episodes to learn some hip hop history
Now make the Zach solo rap album with you on production that we should have had 20 years ago.
Pixies
All day all day!
Can someone tell El-p that price Edward was pretending he and Megan were "run the crown jewels" in a psyop and it was very distasteful.
Great combo
Damn dude sounds just like scott storch.
Love this man
💯
Dope story!
22:04 glad to hear Dante is recovering and sobering
3:13 Howard Hewitt caught a stray 😂
One of my all time favorite albums along with you, and Ferreira. So insane to see coverage on my favorite Rappers by my favorite Rappers--so grateful for that. Just throwing it out into the aether, but no one ever talks about Psyche O and how The Standard probably defined the vibes of many folks raised in the mid 00s adult swim curation of aesthetics. Always thought those guys were so creative and underrated, which was confusing to me. But thanks so much for this; I love learning abt this record; so much meaning in there. ~ Peace and be well Artisan ~
Great story dumbfoundead , ya gotta always keep the blade sharp and shoot the shot hah
This is hilarious love dumbfoundeds take
This is so sick, awesome story from Myka 9! ❤

One my favorite songs of all time
Dante is one of my favorite people growing up.. my sons middle name is Dante because of him❤

What a great interview!!
Fuckin Mike finally got a Grammy! God damn does he deserve it! RTJ 👉🏻👊🏿

15:10 Puber Wrote the Creator for Pete Rock
'ELP
It was payday at Ukrainian hall which is in east village
Dang I’m watching this and the discussion on Puba and so far in full agreement. It’s funny to hear he was allergic to hooks and the second brand nu album (without puba) to me is horrible and opens with hooks… I’m wondering if you’re going to discuss the making of one for all. Edit - exactly the sense of MELODY WAS MISSING …which for me and other cats in the hood uptown was big.
Peace peace, so yesterday I decided to listen to brand Nubians and found myself pondering who was the best mc question I saw a week prior of Brand Nu. 51 turning 52 this year and I worked at east west for a brief period and then walked away from the music industry in the early 90’s. Dante, sd50’s and were pretty much my staple motivation. Anyway I said I gotta find out why brand Nu broke up I know it was issues between lord and Sadat and Pu but was never clear. And looked it up and found this podcast and saw wow a whole series for Dante interviews fucking amazing and started listening. It’s refreshing to hear the life I lived from the voice and mind of one of the cats I studied from afar. Thank you for this podcast. Now it seems I don’t have to do what is being done…blessings to you king
