Nannetta's Fairy Song
Valerie Masterson sings Nannetta’s Fairy Song from Act 3 of Verdi’s Falstaff (in German translation)
Live performance from the Landestheater, Salzburg, during 1964
Valerie Masterson (Nannetta) with brief contributions from Peter Branoff (Falstaff) and May Sandoz (Alice Ford)
Chorus and Orchestra of the Landestheater conducted by Mladen Blašić
This is a very early recording from the start of Valerie Masterson's career in a live performance from the theatre where she made her operatic debut during the 1963/64 season. Her first role was Frasquita in Carmen, followed by Fiorilla in Il Turco in Italia and Nannetta in Falstaff.
We are fortunate to have this tape as she never recorded the role of Nannetta commercially and when she returned to Falstaff in the mature years of her career, she played instead Alice Ford (opposite John Rawnsley as Falstaff in Maastricht and Alain Fondary in Toulouse).
Even from the moment at the start of this excerpt where we hear her voice offstage, the trademark purity of intonation and beauty of tone is evident. In the two stanzas of the aria the high-lying phrases and her trademark piano top notes showcase Valerie’s artistry and special gifts.

John Reed on Desert Island Discs

In September 1972 John Reed, D'Oyly Carte's principal comedian, appeared on Desert Island Discs. Unlike many other episodes from the series, this instalment is not available from the BBC archive as a podcast. The sound is less than ideal as this copy derives from an off air cassette recording made at the time by a life-long admirer of John Reed. However, it is still something for John Reed's ma...

The Hours creep on apace
มุมมอง 7K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Valerie Masterson as Josephine sings the Act 2 song "The hours creep on apace" from H.M.S. Pinafore by Gilbert & Sullivan. Valerie Masterson is simply the best Josephine on record, but the 1971 D'Oyly Carte recording was so busy showing off it's 'Phase 4 Stereo' credentials that the performances didn't always come off. Valerie sounds far more at ease in this track from the 1982 EMI album 'Valer...

A shamefully under-rated English soprano. Her Violetta was stunning - just listen to her 'Sempre Libera' (also available on TH-cam, in English).

Valerie never got the recognition she deserved as one of the best ever English operatic sopranos - just listen to her 'Sempre Libera' (La Traviata) - as good a performance as you'll ever hear (sung in English). Her 'Poor Wand'ring One' (Decca, 1960's) is also a gem.

There is no-one to match Valerie Masterson - purity of tone, diction, range, interpretation, accuracy - she has the lot. A great jewel in Birkenhead's crown who ornamented D'Oyly Carte and then English National Opera. Sir Malcolm Sargent knew quality when he heard it.

Shame on you saying that 'Viennese Night from Scarborough' is an unlikely title. Scarborough has always been and remains the UK home of Viennese music. The Spa Orchestra is still playing this music on a regular basis - the BBC continued record light music concerts from the Spa Grand Hall until about 2005. Check out the Spa Orchestra on Brian Kay's Light Programme. I wont even start to go on about Max Jaffa!!!
