Excellent video!
This was excellent - been collecting “nice” books for 30 years and this was one of the best videos I’ve seen on this subject. Looking forward to watching more of this series!
I wanted this desperately until learning they’d colorized the drawings. Big mistake.
Superb information. "Nice Books" is an interesting designation, and as a collector since 1995, I have an affinity with books as desirable objects. Thank You.
Can anyone explain what happened to Axl and Beatrice 's son? Will they find him?
Great video, thank you.
That truly is a pretty beautiful version of my very first favourite childhood book
Does not seem like a book that is meant to be read. In-text illustrations different locations and sizes don’t make the reading easy and just look mismatched and randomly placed. Enough has been said about two column printing before that I won’t get into it. Don’t understand the praise for this book in these comments and on LibraryThing.
After getting the CTP edition, I have to say to edition is still one of my favorites. This video made me get this book some years back. My shelf hates me but I love owning multiples of the same titles haha
Standard date was a dream come true, finding the definitive edition of this book has been a challenge. I have an Easton Press illustrated by N.C. Wyeth and the most recent Folio Society edition. None of the quite evoked what I wanted. This edition blew me away. I hope I can snag a dinged Flowers for Algernon Thursday 🤞
Thank you very much for the kind comment!
Just wanted to chime in and say I just discovered your channel thanks to your "collecting nice books" videos. I have nowhere near the budget to afford these super deluxe types of books, but it's so fun watching you review them! The lettered state of this one in particular is absolutely insane!
Thanks for commenting. Yes, some of the high end books get pretty crazy. I only get to see the lettered - level books because I review them. But you can spend less than the cost of a high street hardback and end up with some really nice examples of printing or book design, so there's something for everyone. Glad you enjoy watching!
Excellent video as always, thanks. I certainly agree that the limited editions club titles are exceptional value for money. Their only downside from my standpoint is that Macy could lean towards more 'archaic' translations at times. However, I can understand the reasoning, either for a classical feel or due to genuinely limited options at the time. Even with shipping from the US essentially doubling my purchase price, I think I shall continue to seek them out as a very budget-friendly fine-press book.
Great points. I do treasure my LEC Verne's but those Victorian translations are dreadful!
Great video. Having started my journey into modern fine press this year, I'm at the awkward moment where I have spent almost 1k but there is no books in sight for the next 6 months 😓
Ah, yes, this issue. We are eagerly awaiting Paul Kershaw's next book from Nomad Letterpress. Apparently, people were already discussing that book in 2002. Sometimes the hobby demands a modicum of patience...
I'm surprised that Folio gets an entire section of its own but Easton Press gets a much smaller mention, with no discussion of the format or the publisher. And the Franklin Library gets no mention at all... how come?
Largely for pragmatic reasons: I don't own any of those books and it's hard to make a video without any video footage, or to comment extensively on the production if I have never seen it! As I said at the start, I can't mention everyone and at least where I'm from I think Folio Society is a much more common entry point for collectors.
@@UbiquitousBooks I would be very curious to see your thoughts on those publishers. Both are relatively cheaply available on the second hand market, Franklin Library in particular is an interesting study as they did full leather, quarter-leather, and leatherette editions all slightly different. On a side note, as far as common entry points, at least in the US, Franklin and Easton titles are very common in used bookstores. I knew what Easton Press was long before I ever heard of the folio society.
Points well-taken. Yes, I'd also be curious to look at those books, and hope to get around to it one day.
Easton Press and Franklin Library books are not collected by most private press book collectors because they are cheaply made, using inferior papers and materials. Most are also not printed with letterpress technique. They also have a monotonous, uniform appearance that is unappealing. The Folio Society books have nicer book designs and their illustrations are newly commissioned and fresh, much more attractive than Easton or Franklin Library books. Easton Press does have a handful of special edition books that are made to a higher standard but I can always find another private press alternative that is nicer and often less expensive. Bottom line: avoid Easton Press and Frankliin Library books because you will regret buying them years later.
I'm receiving this tomorrow, can't wait. I thought about getting a lettered edition but not sure if it's worth double the price when I'll have the deluxe.
Congratulations. I guess by now you have it. I hope you enjoy your deluxe copy, it's certainly very nice!
@@UbiquitousBooks It's incredible, one of the most beautiful books I own. I love the illustrations. The end pages look better in person, and the feel of the paper is a joy.. I also happen to have a massive painting of Neverland on my wall... so this suits very well. Completely worth it.
First TH-camr to ever mention Heritage press books! Needs a full video!
Yes, they are nice. I think I have about five of their books, but only go around to reviewing two of them so far. But those two can be found here: th-cam.com/play/PLWgRlZtI_L6GOzW-iaq6dseHtRYXvpfWw.html&si=phi0dfs_E61bGRVS
excellent video.
Thanks very much!
A very helpful video. I look forward to part 3. Thank you
Thanks very much!
Wonderful video!
Thanks for the kind words!
we need more books in limited editions like this. makes me wanna start my own press lmao.
Haha, I occasionally go out to the garage to see whether I think there's space for a press. Then my girlfriend pokes her head in and asks "what are you doing?" and I say I am looking for the secateurs.
This is a very thoughtful and thorough introduction into the world of collecting fine books ranging in price from under $100 up to $10,000 or more. The division into the four categories and their respective prices is realistic and the LibraryThing forums are indeed an invaluable source of information and education. One thing not as yet mentioned that is worth emphasizing - if you are going to fall into the expensive rabbit hole of becoming a serious collector of modern and classic private press books, three things are of utmost importance: CONDITION, CONDITION and CONDITION!! If you are spending hundreds or thousands of dollars for an edition, always pay up (within reason) for a copy in the finest condition you can afford. NEVER buy a book that is seriously flawed because it is substantially cheaper. You are not saving money, you are wasting money and ultimately you will not be pleased with this purchase.
Sage advice. I have invariably come to regret taking the cheaper option (except in perhaps two cases where the inferior copies were so cheap as to be scandalous). I plan to make a future video on how sellers describe book condition. I just need to identify copies that make good examples of each grade.
@@UbiquitousBooks An additional but very important addendum regarding book condition. If you are purchasing an expensive private press book, it is crucial that you do your homework to understand what the range of book condition is for a particular private press book. Some books can easily be found in fine condition or "as new" condition and other very famous and highly sought after books are rarely, if ever found in fine condition. You must know and understand what is an excellent copy of the book you wish to purchase. In some instances, a book in VG+ condition may be "as good as it gets", e.g., the famous Cresset Press edition of Gulliver's Travels with Rex Whistler's iconic rococo color illustrations is near impossible to find in NF (near fine) or fine condition and a VG+ copy will be collectible and desirable.
nice!
My favorite modern/fine press is Walter Hamady's Perishable Press. (Especially the Press's eight "Gabberjabs"). There's a nice ten-minute video about Mr. Hamady and his press in the Library of Congress's "Walter Hamady and the Perishable Press."
Thanks very much for the tip. Hopefully, others see it too. The more people checking these presses out, the better!
The Perishable Press books are amongst the most beautifully designed and crafted and ALWAYS are printed on exceptional handmade or mould-made papers. However, the literary content is extremely quirky, especially Hamady's Gabberjab books, and they are not to everyone's taste. Since many are quite expensive, costing thousands of dollars, make certain you know what you are buying into before making the purchase.
@@dlphcoracl9645 Yes, I know, Mr. Hamady generally printed his books on paper that he called "Shadwell." In addition to the aforementioned Library of Congress video about Mr. Hamady, there is a video of a one-hour lecture given by Ruth Lingen at New York's Cooper Union called "The Typographical Genius of Walter Hamady."
This is a great video and a great series. Keep up the good work! I'd be interested in any recommendations for books on the history of these sorts of presses that you liked. One minor note, you misspelled "Conversation Tree Press" on the list at about 16:47, it's missing an "s."
Thanks for spotting the typo. Some books about books I have enjoyed include Pages From Presses II (published by Whittington Press), The Doves Press by Tidcombe, A History of the Golden Cockerel Press by Cave and Manson, The Private Presses by Franklin, and A Quarto-Millenary (from the Limited Editions Club). Most of those focus on Private Press books, which are my main personal interest.
FS was my gateway drug too.
I think we've all been there. My secret agenda with this channel is to get people buying Folio books so that one day they end up supporting a bunch of private/fine presses.
been waiting for this... I recently ordered Suntup Lettered editions of Gormanghast and Devine Comedy, and own Arion Press Don Quixote, otherwise there rest of my stuff is Folio Society and Easton Limited which isn't quite as fine. This hobby is a bit addicting.
Oh, congratulations! I hope you enjoy those books. Yes, once you start it's a slippery slope.
Never judge a book by its cover. Quality of content, by far, outweighs the quality of the binding. A yellow tinged, coverless, paperback copy of the Three Musketeers is of much more value (to me) than an exquisitely hand crafted leather-bound, gold inlayed, silk leafed copy of last weeks TV guide.
Your comment misses the point because people can buy both a paperback and a fine copy of the Three Musketeers. Some people are interested in understanding how to find a copy of their favourite book that is well-made, especially since some apparently "fine" copies are actually badly made. Also, book design is no less of an art form than authorship is, while book production is itself a high-skill craft when done by hand. So, it is not apparent why those art forms should necessarily be of any lower or greater priority than any other.
@@UbiquitousBooksyes, collecting "things" ,especially shiny things, seems to be of greater value than gaining wisdom or substance. I apologize for my jaded outlook in regards to subjects such as "art", I assure you the labor of fine craftsmanship is not in the least lost on me. I own a fine copy of The Cruel Sea & a dime store paperback copy of The Count of Monte Cristo, both of which are absolute treasures to me of the same level, irregardless of their grade, simply because of their content. I do understand that others collect and appraise many different things than I for a variety of reasons. It is a bit off-putting to me, sometimes, to see people hold a shiny piece of tinfoil in higher esteem than a geode, if that makes sense. Again, I apologize for causing offense by my holier-than-thou comment.
@@jamesa7506 Thanks for replying. No offense taken, and I didn't mean to be snappy in my response. Truth be told, I am also a bit disdainful of the "TikTokCrowd" (I write this knowing full well that I am running a TH-cam channel!!) who just want to flash the latest bling. But my mission here is to help introduce people to the pleasures of book craftsmanship. Of course, fine copies of divine literature are the best of all worlds! Glad you are nourished by your personal treasures.
@@UbiquitousBookscarry on my friend!
thanks! yeah they stopped respawning for me.. but once I rejoined the covenant all good!
are you playing on sotf version?
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I have been covering my collectable hardcover books for a while now, and I’m currently on a search for the best way to cover my collectable trade paperbacks. I assume the process is similar, but the ones I own (some early Black Sparrow Press trade paperbacks that came to me already covered) seem to be using a thicker mylar than I’ve been using for my hardcovers. They are sturdily creased not only along the book's flaps but also at the corners of the book’s spine. It’s quite an attractive look, really. I’m guessing it must a 3- or 4-mil mylar-it’s very stiff. Thank you again!
Thanks. I don't cover any paperbacks but I would probably use a stiffer material. In fact, I often see library books in book protectors like these and think they work quite well for also protecting the bottom edge from rubbing: www.care4books.com/products/OnlineShop/BookCovers/AdjustablePaperbackBookCovers
@@UbiquitousBooks Ah, this is wonderful! Thank you!
I collect everything from Easton Press, and Folio Society LE's to Suntup and Arion Press... in that order, they get better and better... that said, all I request from a fine book is that it's not bound and printed in China and that there is effort put into quality materials..
Thank you very much
Collectors's hint: As 'Ubiquitous' has mentioned, many collectors (myself included) believe a private press book must be printed letterpress, preferably from metal type. However, there is enormous variance in the quality of letterpress printing and, frankly, some of it is little better than books printed digitally or by offset. During this splendid review, look for and carefully study the quality of the letterpress printing from the Ashendene Press at 11:31-11:50 and 20:16-20:20 and Doves Press books. In particular, the Ashendene presswork (printing) is considered by many to be the finest example amongst modern private press books (1890-2024) and this will help set the standard for you when evaluating the quality of the letterpress printing in other private press books.
Thanks oracle, I couldn't agree more. Few collectors will start with the likes of Ashendene and Doves, but those who follow the journey that far are in for a treat. Of course, they are also just the foremost of a range of exquisite presses running right up to this day (I know you could show people some real gems).
What kind of material is this?? Cellophane or PVC
It's polyester. If you look at the link in my pinned comment I have another video with more information.
These aren't books. They are art.
I just noticed a typo, "APPENDIX I" is followed by ":" while "APPENDIX II" isn't.
Sharp eye.
why don't they print the illustrations on the same abbey wove paper? should make it more durable right?
Occasionally, you do see that. But full-colour, digitally-printed images look more vibrant and crisp on bright white paper with a slightly satin or gloss surface. Text, on the other hand, is often more comfortable to read on a slightly off-white paper and that paper is nicer to handle if slightly rough. So it makes sense to use different papers for the different purposes.
@@UbiquitousBooks some say that mixing paper types is not great durability wise? im probably overthinking this but these are expensive stuff so if that's true, some people might rather have the simpler illustrations with duotones or non-full-color. would be nice if you can show some samples from your collection of both and tackle it on your upcoming videos.
@@avefreetimehaver5154 There is no durability problem from mixing different types of paper. The only time that would be a problem is if one of the papers was non-archival and leached harmful chemicals into adjacent sheets. But the Folio Society does not use acidic or non-archival papers. You can see examples of books with colour printed straight onto the same paper as the text in the recent reviews of Charline and the Chocolate Factory, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Great Gatsby on my channel.
i find this more tasteful than their more modern looking editions.
Yeah, it's a nice edition that goes a bit under the radar.
is it abbey wove paper all throughout including the paper for the illustrations?
Great video on a great topic, please cover it more!
Thanks very much. Yes, the next in the series is already in planning. Stay tuned!
Amazing video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge
Glad it was helpful!
It's not just a book, it's a real masterpiece. Lettered state is just unimaginable. Thanks for the video!
Thanks very much for commenting!
Awful two column design. What they were thinking?
Yes, I know the design is decisive. As I said, I can understand the trade-offs involved. But not surprised that it's a deal-breaker for some.
I really don’t like column text but the marble papers are magnificent. All in all a bit too pricy considering the content is exactly the same.
Yes, I think the lettered is for people with all of the following: a generous book budget, a keen interest in Treasure Island, and an aesthetic appreciation for this particular binding design. That's a niche group, but the press only needs 26 such people from a world of 8bn--and it found them!
Marvellous books and great review, thank you for sharing :)
Thanks very much!
$500 for a bunch of loose pages? Sure, I'll take two. While I'm at it, do you have any magic beans for sale too?
I agree that the loose sheets seem a bit expensive, especially compared to the bound editions.
Thanks for the great presentation. They all look amazing. To bad that they made so few of the standard edition. Luckily I managed to find the embossed paper they used for the boards so I will try to make a replica (not letterpessed obviously :/)
Oh, interesting. Good luck with your project.
That lettered edition is stunning. I mean they all are in their own way but wow, that's an absolute work of art! Thanks for the video, I've been wanting to get a more detailed look at it ever since I saw the few pictures on the CTP website.
Glad it was helpful. Yes, that lettered state is really nice.
The Conversation Tree Press more expensive editions usually just seem overpriced to me. Most of them are a couple thousand dollars for a nice vellum cover. These at least are really interesting.
Yeah, at those prices you've really got to want it. But when I priced up a designer binding I found that they start from about £2,000 and that doesn't even include the book. So I can understand why these top editions end up being quite expensive. I guess they are aimed at people who have the magic combination of enough of a book budget, a particular interest in the book in question, and an aesthetic taste that matches the book's design. Only 26 out of 7bn such people are needed.
Very nice and thorough review as usual. Great to see CTP realizes the value in these overviews too, you really get a good sense of the value propositions of each state. Excited to see what they do with Solaris.
Thanks, glad to hear the videos might be useful. Yes, let's see what comes next!
