I need to make a clarification. As I am from Sarawak myself, I believe the government do not want to withdraw from Malaysia. The movement is to recognise Sarawak back as a country forming Malaysia, not a state that joined Malaysia. What's the difference? Well, the term plays a significant role as putting Sarawak on a higher padestile above other states in peninsular Malaysia will mean that Sarawak will have more power over it's resources and can have separate ruling entity from the rest of the states which relies on Kuala Lumpur/Putrajaya. Why is Sarawak making progress? Of course other than political reformation and uprising, the economy of Sarawak is one of the biggest in Malaysia and has much more potential to be developed. The Oil&Gas industry in Sarawak gives power to counter attack Kuala Lumpur/Putrajaya forcing them to give more autonomy over resources to Sarawak. As of for now, Sarawak has band it's title Negeri (State) to be Wilayah (Region) to enforce that power. So we do not want to separate from Malaysia, just wanted our power back.
