The Old Fella's Travels
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ม.ค. 2013
Just an Old Fella and his dog (Barnes) out on the road to find myself again. After recently loosing my darling wife and alone again after almost 40 yrs of marriage, I found myself without purpose - Like, what do I do know, who am I.
This channel may be a little intimidating to some, but, I hope it may help other widowers gain purpose back in their life and assist in dealing with the terrible grief that follows the loss of your partner.

Does My 2024 Dmax get Old Fellas tick of Approval
17,000K and 7 months on. How does the 2024 DMax stack up compared to my 76 Series.
The DMax has experienced beach driving, off road, proper 4x4 and mauch open road and city driving - is it the vehicle for me after my 2020 Toyota 76 Series Landcruiser?

Old Mining Shaft Deep Dive - Dangerous Ground

This was a substancial Historic Mining site with some quite hazardous ground around some of the larger shafts. Care should always be taken around these old mine shafts. In the event the accidently fell down a shaft or cutting and albeit you were un-injured. It would be unlikely someone would find you in a should period of time, days, weeks and in more remote areas, NEVER.

Most of us all enjoy a bit of camping or glamping what ever the case may be. Myself and Barnes love out breaks from prospecting and time on the coast living the dream on the beautiful WA beaches. But how hard is it really to prospect full time and spent 6 to 20 months of the yr in the WA outbackk / Goldfields.

Cheers mate. Been enjoying your channel. 👍
@ Legend We really appreciate you watching mate We have subscribed to you also Genuine 🇦🇺Bloke We pissed ourselves laughing when you said “ Shiela “ 😂😂😂🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺 Haven’t heard that for bloody years hey Love ya work mate Gold Cheers Brad & Fi 🤙🍻
I haven't done in the past but I will start for 2025. I want a better focus of funding a patch. 😊
Its sad family would do that to you, I'm cranky for you! Look at your soil samples and reports and find yourself a good exploration for next year. Stumble across that 50-100oz patch. I live of very little each year.
Cheers mate. I'm heading up in a couple weeks to scope out 40E ground for the yr. Anywhere between Leo, Leinster, Que and possibly Meekatharra. 🤔
Go Commander....Keep On Truckin.... A Great Truckin Review.....
I miss the cruiser but only in view on the setup. The Dmax will soon enough get setup once I'm back on the Gold.
Good review Old Fella. What is Isuzu's position/advice on the unusual tyre wear you mentioned?
Last I heard, they have set out a set of guidelines on who qualifies. It's pretty messy. I think now the class action is dropped it could get hard to get it corrected under warranty. But as always, you hear all the bad stories and no good ones. I have read a couple of comments where Isuzu have come to the party but it seems to be dealership isolated. If you're looking to buy a new DMax, check to see if they are replacing the component to correct the issue. I read that all DMax's assembled after about August have the new control arm. I'm yet to challenge the issue, if in fact I do have the problem and will post accordingly. I'll see if I can find the lastest update on what constitutes a warranty fix and post here. Cheers mate. Hope that helps. Have a safe and enjoyable Xmas/NY mate.
Hey mate - I bought bt50 2022 with the bump steer issue - 10000k the tyres were gone. Didn't complain to Mazda because overall the vehicle was phenomenal and got it fixed with Fulcrum - cost $3200 fitted - best money I spent. Developed in Australia and no regrets. Could have waited or whined to Mazda but as I work in industry- can see the wider picture - maybe get compensated in the future but futile in the short term. Fulcrum did a fantastic job with their R&D - tires are fantastic with no feathering.
Good to know mate. I hear you buddy. I expect I may take the same path once funds are available in line with the suspension upgrade that is yet to come.
Go Commander.... Even in adversity you continue to get the most out of life. Keep The Dream Alive......
Big gold yr 2025 - the old Fella's gonna find that patch I've been chasin. 😉😊
Gee whiz mate! I hope your content creating and the community offers you a happy escape. Hoping the next month's yield much positivity mate 🇦🇺👍
Thanx Scotty. Yep, definitely a change to my future plan's. It'll take a little time but I'll bounce back next yr. 😉
Hey mate so sorry this has happened to the most amazing bloke I’ve had the pleasure to meet I know you will get through this but please remember there is always someone in our community that can listen and support you rock on 2025 🇦🇺👍🐶
Thanx Buddy, very kind. I should have been on a trip back over before now but funds haven't allowed. I should back over mid yr for a quick trip and I'll make a point to catch up with you guys and Rob. It's been a while 😊
Hang in mate and when you’re back, we’ll share a story over that coffee.
Yes mate 👍
Good on you Mike. You’ve got a good attitude, so stay optimistic. Never give up! Gold next year cobber 🤞
Thanx mate. Yea, all good. Just a different direction needed. It'll all come out in the wash. Have a good Christmas mate.
A great video, Mike. Sad to hear about your problems & I hope they work out for you. Have a great holiday with Barnes & a very Merry Christmas to you all. Take care mate & stay strong. 👍👍🍻🍻🍺🍺👍👍🥂🥂🎸🎸
Thanx Robert. You have a great Christmas and stay safe in the new yr. 🍻
@@TheOldFellasTravels Cheers. 👍👍
Hey Mike these days you can’t trust anybody and family in some cases can be the worst What you should do get to small mining set up as a care taker payed to stay while they go home or what ever it my be work and detect for what ever it may be see and here may people offering Get on the local f/p gold pages and put it out there Just saying
Good idea, through the summer months care taking, on a mine site ,would be perfect Mike. The service for your country would be enough of a CV. For anyone. Please take care mate, we have both hit the near bottom once ,but Gold and adventure is a great incentive to solider on. Cheers Greg.
😊 Mate, I've only been thinking about that this last few weeks. As you say, a role that allows prospecting on a gold bearing lease. Happy to have a percentage agreement on gold found. It's definable something I am considering for next yr. 🤔 oh, of course It will have to be Barnes friendly 🤣
You know, I really think without Barnes and the adventure of prospecting, I'm not sure what I'd do. I can't help but love prospecting and the adventures of discovery in the Goldfields outback.
Life can throw curve balls. Keep positive and enjoy your adventures. Good luck with your gold hunting as you deserve it with the hard work you put in.
@lauriefarrugia8139 Good advice 👍
Sorry to hear your troubles Mike, money does strange things to people at times. You’ve got the right attitude, I must say, stay safe and I hope to see you out there in the goldfields next year.
Cheers mate. Yea, gold is king. 😊
Hard times create strong men old fella 👍👍👍chin up you will create easier times ahead mate. All the best for Christmas and looking forward to seeing the GOLD and some more exploring of the old mine shafts. 👍👍👍
Cheers. Really looking forward to a new season of gold and adventure. 😉
Keep you chin up mate, after what you have been thru things can only get better. I truely hope the gold gods smile along you and your able to live stress free for many many years ahead.
It's not only about prospecting it things around u keep it up
Thanx mate. I going to do a lot more of this next yr. I think it complements the prospecting experience. 😊
Thanks for sharing Mike! And I like ur choice of music
Thanx mate, appreciated.
beach fishing rod setup would do the trick mate👍👍👍 grate video mate keep up the grate work and be safe out there.
Cheers mate. Appreciated. 👍
Loved the video, have a great break and Happy Xmas and see you next year
Thanx mate. You too. Got a beach camping trip planned- maybe my fishing skills will improve 🤣🤣
You need to take a fishing rod with you.
Yep, got that planned. I need the practice 🤣🤣
Worthy content for your fisrt ‘Tailgate Talk’ - great name btw. But, a bit of advice going forward … you need to be more succinct. This could/should be no more than 10mins or so (content wise). The rest of the time is a lot of repetitive talk. Anyway, look forward to seeing some of your future content.
Thanx for the advice. Really appreciated. Yea, it's a habit of mine to repeat myself. I'll work on it. Thanx again. 👍
Substantial, Mike. lol Great video. I love visiting those old site. Times were hard back then. take care, mate. Happy trails. 👍👍🍺🍺🍻🍻👍👍
Yep, amazing seeing how the old timers did it. There's a remote site still with an old hut and machinery out remote Laverton ways I want to visit. I never tire of it. Cheers Robert.
If you want to upset someone, tell them a lie. If you want to upset everyone, tell them the truth. 😜😂😂👍 You’re 100% correct in your warning. But there’s a lot of after market vested interests in the industry who don’t want the implications of modifications on warranty to become “common knowledge”. If they were “honest & ethical” they would step up to the plate & cover the new car warranty if there’s a failure & their modification caused the manufacturer to deny warranty.
That's a very good point. In view of the after market mod, an agreement to warrant any issues caused by them would go a long way and is something one should ask for in writing. I should have mentioned this - good pick up. I think ARB are heading down this path with Toyota with there "Just Ask " campaign. With the 76 with my pre- rego add-ons, I actually asked about the suspension and ARB would cover cost if failure was due to their product. My only negitive on that is the whose at fault battle that could take months. I love that saying mate - it's great 👍
@@TheOldFellasTravels Many years back when Filming for TV with Starlo & Buschy, Brownie who owned ARB was there because the boys were also filming adverts for ARB to include in their “Hooked on Adventure” series in WA. We got to fish a bit together & he & his missus were a lovely couple, real salt of the earth people. Once ARB got sold & went all Corporate & run by bean counters etc, I just fell out of love with ARB gear to be honest. My last 4WD (a new 2020 150 Prado) I set out to do my build with not one ARB product & thus far I’ve managed to stay true to my quest. It’s a shame because back then I was a rusted on ARB fan and had their gear on 4wds going back to the early 80’s. But not so much any more. They really don’t seem to want to work with the average bloke building his vehicle. They seem to want to take bookings from corporate car yards etc selling their products with finance package on a new car purchase etc. I guess that where the $ are these days.
@ianmoone2359 yea, my last build was all Arb as per the previous. I had a great relationship with Toowoomba ARB but now in WA it's a completely different experience so consequently I have used ARB on the DMAX albeit it's only just started. I had a very good experience with Opposite Lock Midland with the radio fitt out though. I plan to do a lot more myself on this build.
Good advice Mike
Thanx, I think it's a controversial topic, but I wanted to raise awareness. 😊
I'd imagine that most people end up leaving a good ~20-25% of tread life on them since they're a very old, ice/snow tread pattern-based design and have variable tread depth from the carcass to the surface, so they will feather, especially in a diesel, if you don't rotate them frequently. 50k Miles on mine currently and even though my idiot brother neglected to rotate one side and basically trashed the drivers front tire, 5 of 6 still probably have another 50K in them. This is on a truck towing 10-14K lbs ~70% of the time as well. They're the last of a dead breed of true Light Truck tires, from a time when "All-Season" didn't translate to "Bad Everywhere"
I had a set prior these are were pretty good. But this last set were duds.
what more could you want. looks very inviting, might consider a shift. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yea, luxury mining at its best 🤣🤣🤣
grate show old fella 👍👍👍 love the mid week videos mate, love to see all of the old timers way of life keep up the grate work son 👍👍👍
Thanx mate. I plan on doing a lot of this next yr. These old sites are very interesting 🤔
Hy mate, are you out looking around the lake? Good area out that way, love the breakaways
I was. Back in Perth now. Yea, couple yrs back I found a 3 ounce patch at the break aways.
Hope those old timers had some good fortune after carting all that gear out there.
You'd wanna hope so. 😊
My great grandfather's mine WASNT successful and closed after 6 years. I haven't been able to find much online about it
How interesting. Did you have time with your Grandfather to hear of the life style and hardships of mining back in the day?
@@TheOldFellasTravelshe died about 40 years before I was born. I have a document somewhere on my computer of his typed story but visited the state library earlier this year and looked through his original 1930s hand written version
Apologies, I misread your previous comment your , Great Grandfather. One of the early prospectors. Unreal, thanx for sharing.
Which direction from Leonora is this? My great grandfather was a mine supervisor out that way in the 1890s, at guest Gold mine near Mt Morgan's
Out Laverton way. It near Linden area.
@TheOldFellasTravels I've just been looking and mount Morgan's is 37km from laverton. Not sure how much is left there these days outside of the modern mine but I really want to get out that way one day
We had a 40E around there maybe 3 yrs ago. Was lots of old mines about.
Enjoyed the videos mate - maybe next year put in a couple 40Es where the competition will be reduced
Yep. Me and a couple of mates normally do 3 or 4 40E's depending on how they perform. This yr was a disaster for me with health and all. Back into it next yr though. 40E are the way to go. Well work North to Pilbara regions and move back as the weather gets hotter. 🙄
Thanks for the vids old fella, looking forward to next year! 🤙
Thanx mate. You and me both. 😆
Thanks for the adventure, cant wait for 2025. Cheers
Cheers. I'm feeling next yr will be a cracka 🤪
Gday Mike, Have a safe trip back to Perth mate and hopefully catch up for a coffee when youre settled in. Cheers Mal
Sure. I'm away for a couple weeks down South. But when I'm back , definitely. 👍
Enjoy the coast Mike cheers
Definitely- maybe my fishing skills will pick up. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What's it like during winter zeroC night? maybe a diesal heater with a long tube? You know it won't fade at night lol ⛏️
I have a winter doona on the mattress and a minus 3 rated sleeping bag, and it's fine. Mostly closed up, it's surprising how warm it is. I've sleep in -3 nights and it's been fine.
@TheOldFellasTravels yeah that's like the sleeping bags used on a fly-fishing trip in Tassie Highlands bag only no blankets is my backup doona when I go detecting in the Vic triangle - if you had no potable water you could pump it thu a misting nozzle in camp when it's 40c but water is precious ⛏️
@@melbournesubtropicfruits9474yep, atomiser and a fan works surprisingly well.
Great roof top tent Mike. How do they go with an approaching storm with the side windows??. I often wonder if you get wet inside. Keep safe old fellow . Cheers Greg. Ps. I’m the same age😂old fella
I never had issues with winds, no more so than any other canvas / material style swag tent. I actually found it better than the original DOT RTT. Rain no issue. I just zip up the opening about half way or so and all good. I forgot to close up when I was away from the cam when a storm came through and my bedding got pretty wet, but the interior stayed surprisingly dry. 😅
Gdat mine appreciate you sharing, Notice you going to alot of pending ground lately. Hopefully you only go to pending ground from companies not the little people. We have a rule that we dont go to pending ground if its owned buy a private person. As a lease holder it costs money to apply and the yearly rent and land rates ontop. So whem people go out and thrash that ground while its pending it makes it hard for the new owners to recover there costs. The best thing is 40e permits as the mining companies tye up alot of the really good ground. Anyway best of luck to you.
Awesome to watch
Thanx mate, appreciated
Good on you Mike, thanks for posting
Cheers mate 😊
It is good that you are getting some company for a while, Mike. Great video, scenery & blue skies. Dull here in W/belt. Take care and look forward to next one. Happy hunting. 👍👍🍺🍺🍻🍻👍👍
Yep, hot but pleasant 😊 Cheers 👍
It is certainly warmed up Mike keep at it cheers.
Nights have warned up. That's the decider for me. Once it's to hot to sleep I'll call my hand.
Yes you have to be able to get a sleep and have an aircon during the day as well otherwise tough going only a few hours in morning and just before dark even then it can still be 40 not much fun. And the old pooch will be missing you Mike the coast beckons I reckons.
Maybe next yr I'll have aircon 😊@@johnclohessy5547
Just on the lead game Mike. Persistence in the gold game eventually wins out,,,,but it’s hard on the mind. Hope you haven’t got long to go to the magic oz mate .Cheers Greg
Yep. It's a roller coaster, from frustration to OMG 🤣
You’re making me want to try my hand at prospecting, great stuff truly. I’m gonna start using that kinder surprise line, thanks mate!
Cheers mate. Kinda surprise, you'll hear that a lot in prospecting. 🤣😆
Onya Mike! Keen to hear how you go with the warranty process when you’re back in Perth. If it works how it should- it’s a bloody good bit of insurance for blokes like you and I!
Yea, definable mate. I'll do a quick update once I had it replaced as too how it went. Enjoy the show guys. I was hoping to meet Tiff this yr but won't be back in time. Enjoy the new van, looking forward to the new adventures with the family. Take care guys.
I run 45-50 on my KM3 Mud Terrains out in the WA sticks. Touch " wood ", I have not staked a sidewall yet in at least 6 months offroad! I am, however, careful where my " feet " go though!
Yep, KM's are a great tyre. I ran a set of MT Wranglers one yr, kevlar side walls. Mate, tough as and no staking. But I do too much black top to use them. They tended to scallop out on me over time.
Dave here.............We have been using Yokohama Geolanders for the last 6 years. Last 4 in remote offtrack areas with sharp rocks, schist and lots of mulga stumps. My wife Kath doesn't like to prospect far from the car so we do a lot of driving through unmarked bush and rock. you should see the pinstripes hahaha. We do around 4 or 5 trips a year of 14-18 days each a long way from nearest towns and carry 2 spares. So far so good but we run higher PSI around 48 -50 psi in the 100 series and go extremely slow across heavy rock, schist and mulga areas. Often getting out to remove timber and sticks and stamping down any that stick up. Tyres have about 30,000 left on them so will definitely look at the X A/Ts next time. I just put a full set on our caravan and got one of the buy 4 pay 3 specials. Worked out at about $1250 for 4 tyres for the van. We also do a bit of beach fishing around Preston in the 100 series and the A/Ts are fine on the beach.
Cheers Dave. Yea, I was running 45 psi and truly believe I was just unlucky. Preston, yea I fish there too. But if you've seen my fishing vids I'm a pretty shit fisherman 🤣🤣🤣 This is my last 2 days in the Goldfields until next yr. Pin stripping- aw yea. I'm good at that too. But to be honest, it's hard not too when remote prospecting. Thanx for commenting Dave.
@robdarling6807 I constantly got bogged on the WA beaches "you may have my vids" and 20 is my go too for the beach now. I used to maintain 30 on my first trips to the Goldfields, but a couple of friends convinced me different. I'm keen to see what others think. 😊
Good tyres. I had 16s on my 200 series and they were great. Then tried the newer model 17s and they are extremely noisy.
Yea right. 👍
Hey, you talk about tyre pressure in the goldfields. I have found if I air down to 20, not only is the ride better, I usually get through a trip without a staked tyre. If I don’t air down I guarantee I will get one or two punctures. I look at it this way. If the tyre has some give it may escape some stakes by virtue the tyre has taken up some slack. Look at a balloon, if it’s hard it’s much easier to pop than if it’s soft.
That's interesting 🤔 I'm always happy to be proven wrong. I'm keen to see what others think and was going to raise this topic as an dedicated video. Thanx mate. 👍
Wow, 20 is good for just creeping around, but I wouldn't want to be caught in an emergency with that pressure and have to travel for any long distance on the highway. I've ran 28 out the back of the Oodnadatta track to dalhousie springs but generally don't bother in the Goldfields. I only fluff around with tyre pressures on the beach. 🙂
@ we air back up on the bitumen. 20 is fine for under 60 kph. At 20 on AT tyres they hardly look like you have let any air out. It’s more for give than length of footprint.
Dave here. Low tyre pressures expose the sidewalls too much. A sharp edge of a rock or schist will slice straight through. We run our Geolanders at 50psi and when bush bashing across country away from any tracks just creep very slowly over obstacles.
@@kathyadams7025 never had a rock puncture a tyre when prospecting. That’s driving over schist knife, basalt, laterite, and if course masses of quartz. It’s the pencil roots that will usually get ya!
