I grew up with the Milanov Gioconda, before I discovered Callas. I saw Tebaldi in concert with Corelli at the end of her career,and Dimitrova live in Aida, when she took over from Bumbry after Act1 in London, all great artists, but Callas was just something different, disturbing, a highwire act, without a net. There is never a best, but just the one that affects you deeply ,as no other can. People will find that in different artists, as is their perfect right !

Callas era una gran trabajadora también, su entrenamiento belcantista con Elvira de Hidalgo era muy fuerte. Consiguió tener un rango vocal amplísimo y ni hablar de su calidad actoral y sentido de la estética. En diez años de su corta carrera lo consiguió todo... recuperó la tradición belcantista sentando las bases para que la posterior generación de líricas se "pusieran las pilas" y llegaran a su nivel.

Utterly magnificent! We have nothing like this today. Unbelievably beautiful voice with incredible appoggio rock solid breath support and a full open throat. No wobbling, no ingolata, not a single inconsistent vibrato to be heard anywhere. Just a tremendously lush, velvety powerful outpouring of glorious sound from beginning to end, top to bottom. Just as incredible on the bottom as the top. The characterization brought to profoundly intense life. One of the greatest Amneris portrayals ever.

I was very lucky to drive Madame Milanov to her last concert in Trenton New Jersey she was in her late 60's and sounded great but never put Callas in the same catagory as Milanov or Tibaldi

This is an excellent delivery of Gluck's music completely within the bounds of the Classical style which demands more than just loud and angry sounds but also elegant delivery of the music. This role is one of the most difficult in the entire soprano repertoire and one hopes that she will continue to refine it without destroying her voice on it.

Zinka MIlanov no solo fue la más grande soprano verdiana, también fue una gran turandot, en su buenas noches era una cantante de otra galaxia, en cuanto a norma las versiones grabadas no dan una semblanza de lo que realmente hacía, en la grabaciones en vivo por ejemplo canto una norma en el Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires que desde el punto de vista del canto fue maravillosa muy superior a cualquier otra cantante aquí mencionada, traten de escuchar alguna versión pirata que circulan en el mercado, en ellas podemos apreciar la inmensidad de su canto, trinos , filados sul fiato, un legato único, y sino la han escuchado entonces no opinen gratuitamente, de esta eximia cantante, y tengan la valentía de ubicarla en su tiempo para calibrar su estilo, canta en el estilo de su época de la misma forma cantaban dentro ese contexto las grandes cantantes coetaneas, lo genial de Milanov es su canto y el canto es música y en eso Milanov es insuperable, es verdad Callas fue una intérprete estupenda pero su canto deja mucho que desear y su variación en los colores de voz no es una virtud sino un defecto, escuchen Elisabeth Rethberg, Renata Tebaldi por decir algunos nombres y distintas épocas y verán que no tienen un arco iris de colores. y recuerden que la ópera es por sobre todo música, y si quieren ver grandes interpretaciones vayan al teatro de prosa

Apologies for this rudimentary question, but is the tenor in the Dimitrova excerpt Pavarotti? I think so, but I'm not sure because he is in the distance. Either he is standing far away from the mic, or he is just being swamped!

I love Callas, but also admire other sopranos of that time period. I have recordings of many of them. One can have a favorite without hating on the others. And Callas’ VOCAL prime was indeed between 1949 to 1956. In 1957 one could hear the beginning of the problems with her top notes that would only worsen over the years. Except for those very high notes, however, the rest of her range remained intact and her artistry never wavered.
