What are some red flags to watch out for that might indicate a toxic work environment during an interview?
During an interview, be mindful of signs of a potentially toxic work environment. These may include excessive use of the phrase "like a family," a "this is just how we do it" mentality, avoidance of questions about company turnover, conflating company culture with benefits, and a manager with a strange personality. Also consider whether the interviewer is dismissive or answers questions with arrogance or defensiveness.

Women can also work on this, especially when it comes to negotiating starting wage or discussing a raise with their employer. The trick is, while practicing, don't try to DOMINATE the conversation. Best to speak when you have something that you think is genuinely potentially helpful. If you open your mouth more often but half the time it's potentially stuff that is basically useless to the discussion and is just wasting people's time while people portraying better ideas are interrupted, that's not productive. Whether male or female. But if something good comes to mind and you pipe up about it, well that's not being 'bossy' or 'bitchy' or anything like that. That's you contributing, and someone actually contributing a genuinely good point or idea is valuable, again, whether male or female. Just don't be a bloody feminist about it and think it's all sexist patriarchal oppression like you're some unhinged Marxist and you should be fine. Also know, and again this is regardless of gender, if you're new and still learning the ropes, it might GENUINELY be better to keep your trap shut and LISTEN because sincerely... what the Hell do you know? Unless you're some prodigy who just seems to have the voice of God Himself flow from your voice with every word coming out precisely and making your superior's eyes goggle at you and your positively glowing idea, chances are if you try to 'assert' yourself while new, you're only going to make yourself even LESS productive than you already are. Because new and inexperienced people tend to be inherently productive and if you're ALSO drowning out the experienced and wise discussion of superiors, frankly you're a liability that should just be let go. So be smart about it, give it time, it's not something that is fixed in a week or a month. I know, in my 20s I realized I was socially awkward and I worked on it, for like 5+ years, and conducted small-scale experimentation that was generally quite spontaneous. So yeah don't expect immediate results and unless it turns out you're LITERALLY the smartest person in the room, you'd do well to remember the old saying "You have two ears and one mouth so listen twice as much as you speak." If you're a green-horner with no experience... it might actually be best if you don't speak at all unless spoken to. Learn the ropes and make yourself competent. Once you're competent, if you aren't already, then demonstrate that competence through your words. If you succeed, especially in a helpful way, they will be impressed with you even if they quickly get back into conversation and don't compliment you in the moment. Social interactions are BLOODY complicated and difficult, maybe I'm literally autistic, frankly I do not know, but give it time and effort. You can and will improve. God blesses all with at least one talent or skill, but all can learn more talents and skills in life. Use the talents and skills you learn to do good, to be a productive member of society. It will take you far.
