The Difference Between Craft and Artisan - Deerhammer American Single Malt Last Sips

I tried to ask Every Distillery 3 Questions, Is this a Bad Idea?
And what bottle was that ??
This is an excerpt from my review of Distillery 291 Barrel proof bourbon.
I'll have to revisit Deerhammer. I had a bottle of Down Time that I finished a long time ago.
I'm a fan of it. More on the dark malty side of things. Thanks for watching my friend 🥃
I have a 7 year old store pick wheated Old Elk and the proof is at 118. I think 100 would be a better point.
That sounds like a good one. I really think 100 Proof really is great for most bourbon. Thank you for watching 🥃
I’ve been a fan of Old Elk’s high malt style bourbons but their Wheated is delicious. Especially barrel picks. Locally the ones I’ve purchased have been fantastic and vanilla forward. The best wheater? Hmmm you should do a blind side by side in my opinion to see. Which gives me an idea…Good to see you back at it Jeff 🥃
Thank you my friend and Thank you for watching 😊. Cheers buddy 🥃
I've just started my whiskey/bourbon journey. For me, the big turnoffs in bourbon/whiskey for me are: bite, burn, body, bitterness, and astringency. Burn doesn't necessarily have to be proof. Like, I can drink neat Bardstown Origin High Wheat (one of my faves), despite 106 (53%) proof. Flavor profile also matters a lot. Sweetness on the palate makes a HUGE difference in drinkability. But loads of bitter oak tannins (rather than sweet oak tannins), too much smokiness (barrel char), or any peat flavor - yeah, any of are instant turnoffs. Also, one thing that really helped me a ton was learning how to drink bourbon. You don't let the initial sip touch the sides of your tongue, or the tip, not to go under the tongue. Instead, hold the bourbon in the center of your tongue by curving your tongue into the shape of a spoon, and ensure you take a sip of water at least a minute before drinking bourbon. The first sip will be a bit harsh if you haven't been drinking for the past few weeks, and the first sip of spirits on a given day will also be a bit harsher. Also, a huge tip is to empty as much air as you can out of your mouth before you drink. And let in as little air as possible as you sip. The more air in your mouth, the more alcohol fumes there will be, and this can cause a lot of extra burn and harshness and bitterness. This totally changed how I drink spirits and made them far easier and more enjoyable. My fave bourbons are: Redemption Wheated, Bardstown Origin High Wheat (tan label), Weller Special Reserve (green label), and Buffalo Trace (haven't tried the Kosher Wheat version yet). Some may be a bit simple or "one note" and lacking in complexity. But in terms of a crushable, easy to drink, non-harsh, non-bitter bourbon for a beginner, it's not bad. The wheated bourbons on my "to buy" list: 1792 Sweet Wheat, Hard Truth Wheated, Ben Holladay Soft Red Wheat. (I also want to try Bernheim Wheat Whiskey. Which isn't a bourbon, I know.) The regular bourbons on my "to buy" list: Elijah Craig Small Batch, Knob Creek Small Batch (9 yr), Benchmark Small Batch, Benchmark Bonded, Early Times Bottled In Bond, Larceny Small Batch, 1792 Small Batch, Jefferson Reserve Very Old Very Small Batch, Woodford Reserve (regular).
Oh that's awesome, I'm so happy you're enjoying you whiskey journey. It's important to know what works best for you. Enjoy your journey my friend. This one should be delicious. I think it's 88 proof and all dessert.
@ColoradoWhiskeyGuy I'll add it to buy "to buy" list. :) Thanks a bunch. If you haven't tried those ones I mentioned in my faces, it's worth a try if you can find a sample or have a friend who might give you sone to try. Cheers.
@JayMannStuff That's the great part about a good whiskey bar, you can try before you buy. Cheers buddy 🥃
Gonna have to check this one out! I really enjoy the blended straight whiskey. 🥃
If you are a fan of the sweet wheat, it won't disappoint. Thank you for watching my friend 🥃
@ of course! I do like a sweet wheat profile!
Love my wheaters! Always get the sweetness of them and the fresh grassy smell. I don't make cocktails with them because they don't usually carry the flavor that well. But for a sipping whiskey, they are hard to beat. Good job, Old Elk! Great review!
Thank You, it really is a great sipping whiskey. I can see why a lot of people like it. Thank you for watching ☺️
Dude i laughed so hard at this. This is 🥇!!! Cheers!!!!!
😆 I'm glad you enjoyed it. Cheers buddy 🥃
Great video! I agree, especially during this time of year. Bourbon, especially in CO at the small craft distilleries, is all about the stories. I have had many a pour with friends and family and we create memories! Thanks, Jeff! BTW, love the Cinder Dick on your shelf. I spent 3 hours there one day with Mike, the owner. Great guy!
That sounds so fun. They are definitely good people in Durango. I can't wait to visit for myself. Cheers my friend and thank you for watching 🥃😁
I totally agree Jefe, balance is essential. Especially having kids myself and a channel to run it’s tough but the reality is life happens. We also change over time and it’s a challenge to keep up with everything. In the meantime let’s keep making good content and supporting each other. Cheers bro 🥃💯
Absolutely 💯. Thank you my friend, I appreciate you 🙏
Very true about high proof whisky, they can ruin your palate if drink ti neat.... but 40% the minimum is the other end. If they're doing very unique handcrafted things it should be 45% at least so you can ad a little water and do the magic yourself.
Very true, that is a good point. But that one of the hard parts about being a newer small distillery, knowing where to proof your whisky. But I am definitely excited to see where they go in the future. Thank you for watching! I appreciate it. Cheers
Great stuff!!
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it
Great to see you back at it again Jefe! For the money and value this is a no-brainer and a solid pickup. I remember when this stuff wasn’t yet available here in NM and being so curious about the brand since the bottles have that classic unmistakable look to them. Now that they’re here on shelves I can’t get enough. Enjoyed your video 🥃
I totally agree, it's good stuff. And thank you my friend 😊, I'm glad to be back 🥃
🥃🥃🥃
Thanks for watching my friend 😁🥃
Does it finish smooth?
It really does. It's a very easy sipper.
Amazing, thank you!
@chloekillion7924 my pleasure 😁
🎉🎉🎉
😁🥃
Glad to see you back
Glad to be back my friend 😊. Glad to see you 🥃
Meh u mean American scotch.
Yeah man, it's the same kind of thing.
Lol the smoke as the whiskey burns the counter top.
That's how you know it's good 😉
Great review!
Thank you for watching. I appreciate it ☺️
Great list, especially the outstanding Spirit Hound Single Malt - plus their other fine products
Oh I definitely agree 👍💯. Thank you for watching ☺️
Thank *you* for highlighting Colorado's newest, boldest, and best new craft!
😁🥃😉
Thanks for showing that Spirit Hound St Malt❤
Of course, thank you for watching 😁
I'll be on the lookout for this one, although I doubt it makes its way to my neck of the woods. Thanks for the review. Hey, any word on Mr. Liquor Sipper? He's been on the ol' TH-cam for quite a while.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, he actually decided to stop the channel. He was getting in a bad place. Now he is all about lifting and getting show ready. You can find him on IG at bren_conquers
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm definitely gonna look for that bottle, especially with the comment about coffee notes. As for Mr. Liquor Sipper, I'm glad he's addressing whatever was a hindrance. Thanks for the info.@@ColoradoWhiskeyGuy
Sure thing my dude 👍😁🥃
Havent had a ton of colorado stuff, but i really like a lot the ones i have. stranahans diamond peak has been one of my favorite finished asm's the past couple years. old elk's malty profile hits just right! cheers and keep up the great work!
Thank you, I appreciate it. I've toyed with the idea of this video for a while. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Cheers my friend 😁🥃
where did you find the old elk cigar cut in colorado?
It takes a little hunting, but I've seen it in the Colorado Springs area before. Thank you for watching my friend 😊
Great video, loved that you started with Laws! Had a recent visit to their location and walked out with a bottle of the eight year bonded bourbon. Just had to show some support to a fellow Coloradan.
That's Awesome. Thank you. There's a lot of good whiskey in our great state. Thank you for watching ☺️
Sounds like I’d like it. I’d buy it if I found it at the local liquor store, but it’s very unlikely that I’d order it online.
Yeah, no worries. It is very delicious. But it's kind of like an online Barrel pick. Sometimes you can find some really good picks at local stores. Thank you for watching my friend.
Peachy
It most definitely is that 😁

I have yet to give this one a try but you know me, I do enjoy sipping craft whiskey. Comparable to Laws bourbon at that? I need to find this one. Great review Jeff 🤘🏽🥃
Needless to say, I love the stuff coming out of Colorado right now!! I may be able to arrange a sample 😉 Thanks my friend!
@@ColoradoWhiskeyGuy That would be fantastic 👊🏽

Fantastic & important video 👏
Thank you my friend.
It sounds like I better find some of these soon! I too am a whiskey explorer 🥃
Well my friend, I don't think you'll be disappointed. They are delicious 🤤. Thank you for watching 🙂
I remember I was shocked when I first tried the cask strength at the whiskey fest in Castle Rock last year. To me, they are the best Colorado Bourbon.
Absolutely, they are delicious for sure 😁
You know my thought on Laws. I'll greedily grab what I can get my hands on with them. The standard 4 grain is not my favorite expression of theirs. It's very granola forward, a bit dusty and sweet. Where it shines in in 7 year and 8 year and it transforms into something very complex with more barrel influence and the grain forwardness is pushed back to play a more even role in the tasting. Still, I'd grab this over many popular whiskies and be chuckling to myself in the corner. Cheers, brother!
Yeah Brother. I feel the same way. The Bonded where it changes so dramatically is great....or so I heard. I can't wait to try it. Either way, I'm a fan. Cheers my friend and thank you for watching!
This is important. We drink once a week, or every other week, to shoot our shows. I don't drink during the week and if we go 2 weeks, which is becoming more common, I won't drink. You're right, it keeps the tastes sharp and I never want to get to a point where I NEED it. Bad news. We don't actively encourage people to drink, if someone wants to explore, we're happy to guide. It's them coming to us. More often than not, someone is looking for a recommendation. Looking down the whiskey aisle can be intimidating. I get that. We certainly don't want to put anyone in harm, or develop a habit. Whiskey is something to be savored and enjoyed responsibly. I applaud your message, Jeff!!
Well said my friend, thank you 👏
You are on point. "Less depth and grain forward". Personally, I like their rye.
Yeah, I like it. It's a good bourbon, but there are better ones. I am curious to compare it to the latest batch 28 because they added older barrels to the blend. I am also really curious about the 8 year BIB. The rye though, yeah. It is really good. Definitley a fan there!
@@ColoradoWhiskeyGuy I have a request for you. You are not obligated though. Lol Would you do Centennial specials? Like downslope and branch/barrel? In my opinion, they are small but legit distilleries requiring more attention.
@@mchase19 Of Course! I am trying to work my way through All Colorado Distilleries! I have heard of both of them and heard nothing but good things. I will definitely get those in as well! Just a little behind the scenes: I have bottles of Bear Creek Bourbon, 10th Mtn Rye, and Feisty Spirits to review. I will look for Branch and Downslope next!
As someone who started with Laws on batch 1, the issue for me with the standard release is that the rye and wheat are there but they dont really pop. In the 8 yr BiB everything just pops much better, I dont know if its the abv increase of the additional aging, but I consider the 8 yr BiB to be far greater band for the buck than the standard.
I would agree that the Rye and wheat don't pop out in this release. Kind of have to hunt for it. Personally I cannot wait to compare it to batch 28 to see if it improved with the blending of the older barrels. I have definitely heard nothing but great things about the 8 year Bottled-in-Bond. I can't wait to try that one for sure. Thank you for watching my friend. Cheers 🥃
Hmmm you had me thinking this was your signing off video...Good advice my friend. Some folks really struggle handling alcohol, and I have actually lost friends because of it. I can only say I feel blessed to have the ability to know when to draw the line and be happy with just one or two drams. Cheers 🧃
Yeah, because of the type of content I make I felt it was important to talk about how to enjoy whiskey in moderation. Felt I owed it to my people. As far as me signing off, never. I'm in this for a while. I like it too much.
