    Like this build, but I'm not sure why you bothered with XPS foam. You didn't use the foam for texture on the ground or the islands... it could be built of any foam type when using plaster /modelling compound everywhere. Additionally, if you don't stick the floating islands in to the base, just drill down through the XPS and into the chipboard, you could change your island layout easily.

    • @keep_making

      For the islands I did use XPs for the majority of their bulk which keeps them lightweight and easily shaped. But for the boards you’re right, this was a commission, so usually I just use xps as the base to keep everything light but because I used wood to reinforce them here, it made it pretty redundant

    • @theultimatecrab9085

      I am new to making boards and out of curiosity what would you use other than XPS? I do like the look of the plaster rocks but what would make a better base to put them on?

    I've actually been specifically looking for guide videos like this for floating terrain. I'm trying to make a War Cry battle field sized floating island - to use both for war cry, AND as a "tow along" behind a Cities of Sigmar army (because canonically, they bring their buildings with them on floating islands to place down for instand fortifications). I was wondering, on a 22x30 inch board (complete with dense foliage, resin terrain, etc) what tips would you have? Chiefly, I'm trying to find "immersive supports" (so no random acrylic dowels and the like). Chains with epoxy, waterfalls, etc - I'd appreciate any/all tips!

    • @keep_making

      That’s a sweet idea! The chains are a great way to have hidden in plain sight supports. I’ve seen people use superglue to lock chains in place like that before, so you can get a pretty convincing “tow” look that way. I’d also suggest vines or overgrowth, you can use anything as a base support and just hide it afterwards with vibes and foliage.

    • @Jordan-ut1nn

      @@keep_making I was just thinking about Vines & Foliage and bought some thin, 1/8th inch steel rods to toy with using (and some nuts and washers to help at least minorly distribute the weight - but at least it won't give way!!!) Do you have a guide video yourself on how you would do this and hide the support with overgrowth/foliage? Admittedly, I'm /completely/ new to making my own terrain. I love the concept. Bought all the tools. But I suck at technique if I haven't seen it before :/ Thanks for the response btw!

    • @keep_making

      @Jordan-ut1nn i have another video of an entire modular board i did with some floating elements but it's mostly acrylic rod. however there are some smaller pieces within that board that are 3d printed and have the vine support method. in this video ^ some of the vines i made that hang off the edge, you could use the same approach there. i used armature wire, but if you use steel rod it would be pretty similar. youll just want to be ale to hide it in a naturally shaped formation.
