Hey there, Maybe (probably) I missed sonething.. But where did you get the blue lanterns from? Thanks
Hey bud, got if from Fire Fish Lagoon during chapter III. It had stayed back on the junk when I started to use the Cog. I think you can only get it there.
Great. Thanks. Will make my way there in a few days 😁
I was just recommended your channel a day or so ago. Based on this first video, I'm looking forward to watching your other videos!
Dalton! Thanks for stopping by Sir! Wow! If one day you catch up on the journey I'd really appreciate your feedback. Loved the Tea Merchant series!! Was real nice to see you are back to uploading Sailwind content (although we like similar games, TF2 is pure gold.). Peace!
@ I had no idea you were subscribed to me! That’s awesome! Yeah, I’m going to try and watch one video from you per day. I’ve seen some snippets of more recent videos and you’re doing a better job at storytelling than I did. Keep it up!
❤ . I love the sail arrangement and I'm loving your enthusiasm in making an immersive first person experience for us to enjoy, thank you. Do you have real world sailing experience? ❤❤
I have real world sailing experience. this game is the closest ive seen outside of actual sailing simulators like Sailaway. Its especially good at simulating rule #1 of sailing. where ever you want to go, thats where the wind is blowing from. also, Tacking is actually harder in this game than it is in a real life masthead sloop rigged yacht. i think the wind simulation is a little over enthusiastic when you get in-irons. In real life, you keep your jib/genoa sheeted on the lee side until your nose crosses with wind a little and the sail backs. IRL, instead of starting to push you backwards, it actually helps blow your nose around to get on the new tack, then you let your lee > now windward sheet fly and haul in the new lee sheet to complete the maneuver. piece of cake. game makes it too hard IMO.
Nope, I don't have RL sailing experience. I remember some basics from when I was sailing as a kid but that would be it really. This games forces you to look into it a bit tho!!
HA! Definitely got that #1 rule right! Did you have a chance to try the 3rd version of Sailaway? Was looking into it recently
43:42 -- RE: 6+ Knots Upwind; Yep! Welcome to the land of Fore and Aft rigging. Chances are the same rig will get 8+ on a Beam reach and 12 on a Broad Reach.
And Broad Reach is where the Squares will start working well with the 40 degree arc to either side.
I am hopping for that level of performance when I have the right config. Maybe even more?
29:32 -- RE: "It's a bit tight with the squares."; A: Agreed! That's also a good argument for having at least 2 masts, since adding Stays for headsails means that some Square options will be blocked or obstructed by the stays.
I am wondering if I should not drop the squares entirely in this config. The benefit of having them when wind is favorable (only 40 deg amplitude on each side) does not seem to compensate for the additional dead weight I carry every time it is not, which in this game seems to happen every time it figures out where you're going lol.
@@Icu2chill When running downwind, Broad Reach on either side or dead astern, it should be the most balanced pressure and thus no heeling, all ballast can be set to the centerline. It'll help perhaps half the time in Aestrin region though because going North can happen as well as going East. I bet a wide square on a Mizzen mast would be better though... ; P
@@Icu2chill You can adjust the shrouds of the masts to get much better angles on your square sails. If the gaffs can't swing out as far going downwind, well, you have the improved squaresails. You're already saving a ton of weight with the open cargo area and the removed foremast. You could even add a mizzen mast with a brig square and a smaller gaff and have incredible performance at all points of sail, and still weigh less than the stock junk.
I need to look into that! I didn't know the shrouds could be adjusted. But yes I agree, a mizzen is very likely the way to go, and with your suggested sail plan I should be golden! I wanted to focus a bit more on raw performance and was wondering how weight impact speed when it comes to the ship (and not its cargo). PS: haven't forgotten your clipper recommendation as well ;)
@@Icu2chill Awesome! The junk has great potential as a high speed machine. I like to put a bed in the wheelhouse right by the wheel and just use the cabin for extra cargo.
28:43 -- RE: The Brig Gaff; An excellent sail with a lot of area, the downside to all the "Brig" rigging available in Fort Aestrin is that the booms and spars are much larger than on any other sails, so they weigh more. Medium sized ships can handle them but considering what it costs in mass it's coming out of the maximum cargo capacity. Worst "fit" I've seen with Brig rigging isn't on the Junk, though. I once tried the largest Brig Square out on a Sanbuq, and immediately reverted to a smaller 9 yard trapezoidal. It's better to use one of Al Ankh's wide squares than a Brig square on the Sanbuq.
Without mizzen I am hoping that it actually helps balancing the weight as most of the cargo is slightly ahead of the main mast. But it still feels like I am butt high a bit more than usual, which may impact my ability to fight heavy seas if my bow keeps ramming into the waves. More testing needed. I like the one mast config. A lot.
@@Icu2chill As of now, the Gaff will be the only sail to give you Upwind tendency and it will work for sure close to the center of mass for the hull. The biggest downside I can imagine would be if it causes too much listing, not heeling, when the spars are swung out. There might be no way to counter balance it, but given the evidence you showed in this video it looks like it'll work out fine if the Wind doesn't heel it over when sailing close hauled. If running downwind, the Gaff will be probably best furled and the spars winched in tight to keep the ship on an even keel.
Any idea why I am actually liking the gaff here and was struggling with it in the dhow and in the cog until very recently. Is it linked to the sail area vs ship size ratio?
26:13 -- RE: Looking at ancient ships; I've done the same thing, and that's why I've started checking out what possibilities exist for rigging a lateen onto a mizzen mast. Throughout history from the 1500s until the 1800s, that's one of the most common sail plans to find represented in art for the mizzen mast.
The Lateen from Alank'h would work better on those big ships I think. The one from Aestrin looks very... triangular to me. Maybe just a look thing.
@@Icu2chill Al Ankh has a Tall lateen which I think might be the only one the Brig can use, it needs to be angled higher to allow the boom to clear forward masts. The Sanbuq's currently the best one for tall masts, the Junk gets a nice distribution of masts but the mizzen mast is small as I recall.
Exactly what I am finding out with the junk. I wanted to go for a replica of a certain type of ship today and couldn't cause the mizzen is too short... need to get my hands on those two other big boats at some point!
Exactly what I am finding out with the junk. Wanted to check if I could go for a replica of a different ship today but the mizzen is too short. Will need to get my hands on the two other big boats at some point!
How do you tie off to a bollard at Port and then PULL your ship in? I didn't think that was possible in this game.
Once you have attached your mooring line to the dock's cleat, default key binding "R" and then mouse wheel to pull your boat in or release some rope. Right click after engaging "R" will allow you to control the rope from your boat's cleat instead of the dock's one.
@@Icu2chill OMG this is amazing! Thank you! BTW how did you get a hold of a cart to move more than one box at a time?
You need to activate the cargo system (not available in all ports). Check the first few minute of the update recap video below, it goes into details about this mechanic th-cam.com/video/gAxpM4jjfag/w-d-xo.html
Lol how do you throw the boxes? haha
default key binding is "T". The longer you press it the further/more strength your throw will have. Useful to get your boat unstuck sometime...
OMG didn't realize I was looking at the Junk at first Having a choice of head sails is a nice option though, especially with a narrow-beam ship.
I did not intend to try the one mast config at first but then... It looks quite good IMO. Still need more testing tho
Love the RP!
Thanks Kharney! Sailwind provides the almost ideal setup for it to be fair!

About gaff sails - I have a cog rigged similarly to this configuration. I like it because I prefer to trim the boat to the wind rather than steering a course with the rudder. I recommend trimming the boat, then locking the wheel to center. If the wind shifts, I just use the mizzen sheet to compensate. Let me know if you have success with this!
Thanks DFA! In my next trip I actually started to use the mizzen sheet more as a rudder but I haven't yet used the wheel lock mechanism apart from when I turn. I usually keep adjusting as needed. I think I was a bit overloaded as well and ended up needing to correct course quite a lot to take on waves at the right angle. I'll definitely try locking the wheel once all my sails are trimmed! Thanks for the tip!

You've been on the sea for 4 days to make a delivery??? Must be an extremely giant map.😯
In game time right! I think 5 hours in game is about 10 minutes IRL. Crossing from one region to another would take much longer.
33:10 -- RE: Tacking Tips for the Gaff Rigs; Here's 2 for you. First, furl the Mainmast Gaff before you commit to the turn. Also, loosen the Jib at that same time. Second, When you're in Irons, go to the Mizzen Gaff and drop it to 50% or Less. You can do that After you've reset the Jib. Now, a Third related Tip. If you continue to tighten the Jib on the Wrong Side, you'll continually get stuck in irons I think. The Reason is because you need to have the Jib set Closer to the Mast to be able to sail it Closer to the Wind, and therefore it don't get stuck in Irons as Fast as it does when the Clew is on the Gunnel and locked in tight because you've used the nearest Winch instead of the Upwind one. Therefore, Loosen the Jib before committing to the Turn, then lock the Wheel hard over, and when the Wind passes across the Bow get to the Upwind Winch for the Jib and tighten the Sheet until it is between the Gunnel and the Mast. If the Knot is closer to the Upwind Winch than the Downwind Winch, you'll be setting the sail to go in reverse. Another related Tip: Heeling and constantly turning into the Wind means your Gaffs are set Tight, and probably Too Tight if shifting Ballast doesn't correct the Heel. Player Weight is also a Good Indication of how much more to Shift. *And,* notice the Side that Player Weight is best on? Upwind. The Mizzen Gaff will likely have the most effect on a constant turn, set it Looser or use less Sail.
Damn I legit thought I was tightening the jib on the right side now... What a moron! Use the winch that will bring the jib closest to the mast, got it. Although with the mizzen and more practice I have much less issues with my boat going against the wind now. And I guess that furling the mainmast gaff would help a ton indeed for the turn! I was not sure if there was a way to make a clean turn with full sail deployment. Thanks James!
22:23 -- RE: Improving Sailing skills with this type of configuration; A word on the Junk Jib. I think very highly of the form of that sail, and have used the largest ones on the Sanbuq in the past, also to good effect. Notice how it's rearmost point, the Clew / Knot is well behind of the Mast? That is ideally how a Genoa should be rigged, so this sail is probably working like a hybrid here, providing thrust in a similar way that a Genoa would and also keeping the center of effort closer to the Mast, ideally inboard of the ship.
Took me a a bit to figure out how to have it work properly. I think my genoa might be too small to provide good counter force. But it is fun nonetheless!
19:40 -- RE: Sail Configuration; I think what I like the best about this setup is the two Gaffs can be set to either side when appropriate, including one to Port and the other to Starboard when the Wind is coming from the Stern. it will be easier to manually make that happen by letting the Wind handle the Mizzen and by doing the mainmast Gaff by hand, grabbing it and jibing it over to the opposite tack. The Mass of the spars also matters, and when they're swung out all the way they'll change the rolling moment of the ship as well as induce a list.
I experienced that, and maybe because the junk sail is lighter than the gaff I had quite some list and ended up correcting rather than trying to explore how to stabilize. Will keep that in mind
9:45 -- RE: Where to put a Lantern on the top deck of the Cog; A: Trick Question! Because of how the game handles clipping, you can literally place the lantern on the Deck in front of the Mizzen mast and be able to turn it On or Off from down below, because the lantern will highlight when you mouseover it through the deck. The Lamp will also provide recessed lighting for everything inside the cabin as well as on the top deck. Having the lamp hook on the mast also makes sense, because it makes the sails easier to see, but you can go up there and hang the lantern when that's necessary.
Amazing tip James thanks!
Beutifuly Edited
Thank you so much! It means a lot!
Hi UCI, I love your series. Whenever I have time I try to keep up. I would like to know, as you are one of the few content creators for this game, if it would be possible to make a video with your best sail rigs for each boat. It would really help the public who watches you and then tries the game. Sorry for anything, I'm using the translator. Success always
Thanks bud!! As per your suggestion, I am trying to provide some perspective on the different sails configuration and I am doing a deep dive in the Let's boat series (Work in progress, only the Dhow is covered for now). I will make sure to highlight more what works best for me!
Such a great channel matey, keep it up:) The sort of channel that you click like to on every video before they even start.
Ah! Thanks bud, make sure to take that like back if I fail to deliver though! Peace
When buying from the book you can click on the coins on the bottom right and buy with different currency. You don't need to exchange unless your buying from the market.
Forgo that for a minute 10k thank you! That would have worked indeed for DC as there is a conversion chest. I believe you can only do that in towns/cities where you can exchange currencies. Never actually realized it did not apply for the market! Doesn't apply to buy new boats neither, I remember swimming in Aestrin to get those precious gold coins 😂 Cheers!
❤❤, je voudrais entendre le son de jeu, pour moi c'est trop silent. Mais cette let's play est un super bon idee . Merci et j'espere Mon francais est pas trop mauvais 😂. J'aime beaucoup ton accent.❤❤
Ahah super accent! Merci beaucoup Le Musketeer! I think the sound gets better as episodes progress. I am trying to make sure there is a good balance between game sounds, chat and music, and turned up voice and game sound. Let me know if it improves!
Thanks for a great series. Really enjoying ypur storytelling. I'd recommend rigging the cog with the 8yd and 6yd gaff from DC and replace the jib with the small genoa at Asterin, that'll make you run againt the wind as close as possible by itself because of the counterforces and the shape of the genoa. Cheers and hope you keep the series running!
The counterforce!! Thanks J0e for an amazing tip!! I already have the 8yd and the genoa... Gaff sails have been my nemesis so far. Time to even the odds!
@@Icu2chill The small genoa extends behind the mast so you probably got the short one. =)
You, Sir, have eagle eyes! Indeed.. I'll need to swap that one soon. However I did put up a 6 yd gaff and try to sail with that counterforce approach in mind and it flippin' helped! Thanks for the advice!
@@Icu2chill Thank you for a great series! The the suggestion i sent will actually lock itself on course when running close reach if you tighten all winches and having the genoa dead center.
Yes! Well since I had the wrong genoa it was not fully on course but damn I learnt so much with those tips!
Why the square sail on the mizzen? A small or medium gaff could be more useful. No modern sailboat uses a square sail.
Funny you mention that TA, I was looking at cogs and brigs sails config through the ages this week. It is definitely not optimized for all wind scenarios. It made sense initially as I was trying to understand squares and their interactions. I was hoping the mizzen would carry 2 sails, but nope. Challenge is I am embarking on quite a long voyage back to Aestrin and I don't have much funds to try out other configs. I may give it a try tho. Maybe a junk sail while I am here? Hmmm..
I'm back in the Emeralds after visiting Fire Fish Lagoon. Enjoying a profitable trade route carrying iron from New Port to Dragon Cliffs. Eventually I will set sail for Happy Bay, then Fort Aestrin. I will then go back home to where I started in Al Ankh, full circle:) I can't wait for player bodies and clothing on the road map. Still in the Dhow, I love small boat life and you videos:)
You should go full circle with the Dhow! That's really impressive. Are you playing with sails config a bit? Go for the DC loop!! I heard the Dhow faired very well in that race 😎
@@Icu2chill Thanks! The Dhow is still just the starter lateen sail but I added a lateen jib. I really love navigation now I can do it.
Hi! Did you find anything profitable in Fire Fish Lagoon? Last time I was there I really enjoyed the archipielago, but there was almost nothing interesting to buy at a good profit. I hope it changed
@@bouldergarfish1620 Hey B. No I didn't find anything at Firefish, but I was still a bit "new" at the time and didn't risk buying anything to sell. The best I have found so far is New Port to Dragon cliffs with the Iron. Eidt: Its was Copper not Iron and the Profit was around 6K with just 1 crate.
Inter island trade is more based on luck, at least that's been my experience in the Lagoon. But I would guess that with large ships and using Kicia Bay as a loading port you could trade log, lumber and Iron/Copper (I think) and make some profit locally. Best short trade route seems to be Lagoon to Archipelago, which can be done in a very reasonable amount of time, regardless of boat size
12:40 -- RE: Improving the Rudder on the Cog; The Cog's drawbacks include how Wide it is compared to how Long it is, but on the plus side, it's always possible to improve its handling by dropping sails either forward or back. In the case of the turn off this dock, it probably requires just the Jib which will slow you down until you're through the tack, and then it should push your Bow around. *But* if the Gaff is also flying when you're through the tack then it will be trying to push you back into the Wind, which will make the Rudder less effective. The *most* work required would be to go into the tack using just the Gaff, and when through the Wind, dropping the Gaff and raising the Jib.
Attention to details is key then! I do find the cog's handling to cover quite a range, from surprisingly reactive to "why is it not turning an inch".
10:55 -- I had to chuckle when you first pulled up to the Dock because I know from past experience it's possible to make the U-turn to go back through the North gate, even in a big ship like the Brig, but it's really tight and requires very careful management of the sails to prevent the ship from going too fast and thus turning too wide. I've also spent 2-3 hours of game time, the best part of a morning, manually pushing the Brig through the turn because the Winds weren't favorable. That's probably what makes remembering the Race last week so much fun, knowing that at best it will allow high speed but at worst it'll leave you stuck in irons, or run aground. I'm also somewhat glad that the game doesn't simulate tides or else Dragon Cliffs would be a lot tougher to access as a harbor.
I was laughing too as soon as I realized this time I was approaching it way too relaxed to have a chance to make it work! With a big ship tho? I recall not even trying with the Junk! Talk about the Brig! Tides would add a lot more complexity, and likely not only in DC!
Thanks for sharing and cool style of content on your channel. If you didn't figure it out already, the sailor in the tavern tips you off about the (background) economy of the game. The prices for goods change based on what goods are sold where (by invisible NPC traders). So if a port has been quiet lately, it means most likely you can purchase local goods there and sell them off for good prices at islands which need those goods (i.e. none of the invisible NPC traders is currently exporting from here, bringing down demand and prices at the receiving end). The tips are for free trade (purchase and sell from own money) and they do not relate to the 'fixed' cargo missions you get from the harbor master, those are always what the mission tells you.
Thanks D! To be honest I do not rely much on this feature.. I think it is a really cool addition to the game, and helps me quite a bit with the roleplay aspect, but I did not dive into how it affects the trade. I feel it is still fairly predictable overall and town based? Does it impact how you trade in game? I'll pay more attention to it!
Hello, did you see Following seas on steam?
Heya T0m, yep, I followed a few of Brendan's dev logs and have downloaded the demo upon release but haven't touched it yet. Hoping to do a quick dive next week.
Have you smoked a pipe in sailwind?
Инкогнито лучший!
Not gonna lie, right now it's my favorite too! 😎
Поздно вкатился в игру. Но ты крут!
Welcome aboard An!
Really fun video! It would be great if the game could do multi-player.
True, I have often thought how cool it would be with 2 people on a tiny boat making it work:)
I'd go on an ocean ride with the two of you for sure!
Uploaded 4 hours ago, this went stright into my algorithm!
Must be a good one then! 🙄 Thanks for stopping by!
23:35 -- Given the severity of the list, it might be possible to race both the Cog and the Dhow faster with a little more Ballast. 2 Full Barrels + 1 regular Crate with approximately the weight of the Player should do.
For sure! The Dhow got lucky..
Tu as essayé ?
(L'ocean journey roleplay me coute beaucoup 😅).
This was very interesting.
Thanks Cesar!
I love this
It was draining a bit but fun to put together!
Hey ICU. I have been putting some effort into my skills. I made it from Al Ankh to the Emerald Isles, then I went down to Firefish. My first time ever for both. Still in my Dhow with the standard lateen sail but added a front lateen jib:) Thanks for the inspiration.
Do a video!!! 👍👍
Awesome Oluabayo! Next time you're in the archipelgo go for the DC loop, I'm sure you a Dhow pro now!!!
Your voice is just ridiculously too quiet.
As in volume? Yes, there was a lot I was trying to learn at once with my first few videos. I believe it gets better as the journey progresses. Thanks for the feedback Tony!
Holy shit. Waffle much? Try writing a coherent script.
Love the video keep it up🗿🗿
Thanks Kaasman!!
This is great. The music, the narration, it's quite engaging and relaxing. Everybody says the cog can't sail close-hauled but it's quite good with the right rigging. I use the forward-most configuration for the mainmast to separate it from the mizzen (gaff) as much as possible, which allows me to lock the rudder amidships and let the trim keep my course. Using gaff for the mainsail and mizzen (and no squares), it will happily sail less than 25 degrees off the wind. Thanks for uploading these very pleasant videos!
Thanks Winp! Yes I agree for the Cog, although I am still somewhat struggling with gaff sails more times than I'd like!
