Suzuki DR650 - 17 Negative Things To Know Before Buying
Today I will describe 17 things that I don't like about the DR650 after owning 3 of them over the last 18 years. My 1st DR650 was a new 2006. I rode that for a few years and traded it for a Kawasaki ZRX 1200. I quickly sold this before I killed myself and bought a used 1999 DR650 with only 3,000 miles. I left this one completely stock and rode it for a few years and enjoyed it just as much as my heavily modded previous one. I sold this one to buy a used Vstrom 1,000 which felt like a DR1000 as far as the engine goes. I really liked the Vstom, but it was too heavy to ride off road so I bought a 2012 DR650 which I still own 70,000 miles later.

You obviously did no research before buying the bike and, the things you speak of in this video have already been discussed and work around for them, if needed. What year is your bike, 2023, 2024, 2025? You are talking absolute nonsense concerning several features on this bike; what is this, a click bait video to make some change? How long have you been riding? Why did you buy the bike? You already had 3 DRs? What are you talking about? Waste of time.
Wow! For someone who's owned 3 you sure have gone out of your way to prove how little you know about your bike. Everything on your list can be debunked but I'm not wasting my time on that.
Are you increasing your preload on the rear shock before loading the saddlebags? You should be, but if not, that could cause the wobble you’re referring to. This is a new one to me, I haven’t heard this before as being specific to the DR. EDIT: on your other video, you mentioned lowering the rear of the bike using the factory method (using the other bolt hole in the shock). Did you also use Suzuki’s front fork lowering system? I forget exactly what they do, but it involves relocating some spacers. Seems straightforward, but I don’t remember the details.
There are 2 switched accessory sockets: one behind the headlamp, and one under the seat.
Just getting into the dual sport at the ripe age of 50 and picking up my 2024 DR next week. Coming from the street and cruiser bikes for over 10 years, I'm looking to expand and change things up... but still keeping my GSAX S1000GT of course. I've researched the hell out of the DR and there is a mega cult following and excited to get started. The DR. Bush Pig is the ultimate "Jack of all Trades" and when I had my V-Strom 1000, I know that a lot of what this bike can be pushed to do is, skilsl.... there will be limitations of what a bike can do of course but the skill that some guys have can take a Harley into the woods... lol. Gonna keep it stock for the first year, learn how to ride off-road and then enter the dark path of mods will begin.... Great videos.
Suzuki began to Loctite the neutral safety switch screws beginning in 2017, if you own a model year prior to that then you'll want to get to them and Loctite them, some people safety wire them also. To fix the stock seat, remove the seat cover, remove the seat foam from from the pan, take a bread knife and cut out a 2 to 3 inch wide rectangular section out of the center of the seat foam (front to back) in the area in which you sit, go to a fabric store and get a much softer foam, cut a piece of softer foam and place it in the center section of the original foam with spray glue, place the seat cover back on and staple to the pan. Now you have a comfortable seat because the area where your tail bone is will not be compressed by the hard foam, this is what causes the numbness on the stock seat when riding more than a half an hour. Hope this helps.
That is great to know, thanks for the info on the NSU screws. Nice tip on fixing the hard seat, I guess you could do that with most of the hard dirt bike style seats, Thanks!
@@dirtbikefactory Yes, this is how you fix any hard motorcycle seat, especially dirt bikes and dualsports, because it's the area where your tail bone sits that causes all the numbness problems, this is where all the nerves exit the spine and they become compressed. I have tried a lot of different aftermarket "comfort seats" and none of them (especially "Seat Concepts") are any better than the stock seat for long distance riding. Total cost of fixing your stock seat, about $20 bucks.
Great tip, thanks!
Thank you, nice video. I bought a 2021 DR650 at the end of summer 2023 and I love it. I upgraded the seat and installed a larger aftermarket fuel tank and a LED headlight. Best of all it's easy to move around and fits in my garage on the side and I can still put my car in!
Nice. Did the 2021's come with the new smog equipment? My 2012 didn't have it, but I've seen some newer ones with it, just curious. Thanks.
I love love love the DR650! Regretted to some extent trading it for an enclosed utility trailer. I currently live in the Philippines where it's not available or I'd get another. I have a motarded XR150 here and a HD Springer at my son's house in Texas. If he buys my pu, I may just buy another used, farkeled DR..
Cool. I once traded a DR650 for a sport bike and regretted it, I'm now on my 3rd DR650. It's one of my favorite all time bikes !
I got a 2009 dr 650 a week ago and love it! Found the video super helpful thanks mate 👍
Awesome! I had a 2001, 2006, and now a 2012. Loved them all !!!
The white foam is extruded polystyrene...the most R value is from polyisocyanurate
Thanks! Good to know. This stuff was about $15 for a 4x8 sheet so it was in my budget.
Which handguards are those?
They are from a company called Highway Dirt Bike (HDB). They have integrated mirrors that work very well. I really like them, but a little pricey.
What model number hand guards did you get? Suzuki is not listed on their website. Thanks.
Hello, They have one under Shop Parts, then handguards, then keep scrolling down until you see Suzuki DR. hdboffroad.com/product/ultimate-hand-guard-suzuki-dr/
@@dirtbikefactory Many thanks.
Your welcome, more to come. I've been riding and working on my DR650's so long, feel like I know them inside and out. Luckily, have never had to do any major engine work. I did install the 790 big bore kit myself so that was a little involved. Thanks.
You know you can get it rebuilt😂😂😂
Yeah, I've never been into getting things rebuilt, had bad luck one time and it cost me the same as a new one would have, but that's just me, I'm sure many people do get them rebuilt.
I still have my original one so if my cheap knock off fails, maybe I'll rebuild my original. Thanks.
Glowing red headers at idle probably means your engine is too lean on the air/fuel mixture. The factory exports these bikes lean in order to pass the emissions test.
Probably in most cases, but mine does it even while jetted rich, I think it just gets hot fast since it's air cooled, needs to be moving to stay cool.
I only notice it when it's dark out and I let it idle for a few minutes, probably a minute too long, lol...
Suzuki DR 650 is the best, drove one this summer. Nothing for weak legs of u know how u start one;)
Yes, I really like them, this is my 3rd one !!!
Better rich than lean. Have fun with the 790. DR are great 👍
Thanks 👍
Very important and interesting. Ha ha!
Thanks!
60 percent off now
Yeah, not sure why they were that expensive, doesn't seem any better than some of the others that are less expensive. Maybe just the Yamaha name?
I never heard of them thanks I will check it out. I love my DR.
Yeah, definitely check them out. I've had them for years and a buddy of mine has too. Only downside is that they are pricey.
Looks leas rocky than I remember from a year ago or so. Did they remove some rocks?
The main Jeep road isn't too rocky. I think sometimes they do smooth it out a bit for the hunters. The side trails on the other side of the paved road are still very very rocky.
Thats cool but can you not just tip the bike over the same but the other way? Over your oil pan lol. I dont service bikes so i genuinely dont know if theres enough clearance.
In theory that could work, but it doesn't work well. It's hard to work under a bike that's tipped over and the oil would tend to run down the engine or frame onto the skid plate which makes a big mess, so I guess the short answer is no, that doesn't really work. Thanks again for watching.
Cool!
Thanks for watching!
loving the flow of this trail dude! bike sounds great as well!
Thanks, I agree, this little thumper does sound pretty good.
nice review, looks like a great addition for those longer rides, loving the bike as well, just subbed to ya!
Thanks, Yes, these bags really do work well for the money. Some of my friends have luggage that costs so much more, it's good too, but costs about 5x as much, lol....
Looks sturdy
Thanks, yes they are very sturdy.
So how did it work????
It works ok, I personally wouldn't buy again though. I really just wanted a bolt on 2 inch lowering link, but ordered one on ebay for a honda crf250r and it didn't fit so lost that money. I either didn't buy the correct year or ebay add was wrong. This one has too much adjustability and moving parts for me that appear they could come loose or where out. Hope that helps.
Bad ass bike!
Can I ride with just my regular license, or do I need a special motorcycle to get one.
I'm really not sure about the license, sorry.
@dirtbikefactory, it's fine, thanks
dream bike right here
Definitely a nice bike, but a friend of mine had one and it can be a handful in technical single track. As with most 4 strokes, they do better in faster terrain, don't really like to be lugged down low in slow stuff, more stalling, power is a bit jerky, and it feels a bit top heavy going slow. He switched to a 300 2 stroke and was much happier in the slow technical stuff. I think in faster 2 track type riding the Yamaha would be more fun.
@@dirtbikefactoryyea 300 2 stroke sounds fun but my father is doing most of the funding for my bike at he has always hated two stroke anything and hates the idea of a two stroke dirt bike. you see i have a pretty good sized ranch and need somthing to get in and iut of there quick to shut off water or check water but the arizona loose rock terrain is pretty rough and i would love a 300 two stroke but the thought of it blowing out or fouling a plug or anything that could put me at risk being left out there 20 miles from home in the mountains where theres no service or nothing isn't the best so i love the reliability of a 4 stroke.
Kool
Thanks. The bike isn't really made for dual sport riding but it works pretty well, just not on the highway. It has a close ratio 6 speed, so I had to make big changes to the sprockets and it only has a 1.7 gallon gas tank so I carry spare fuel bottles in my luggage.
Kool
how hot are these suppost to get I can't even touch the case after a few minuets of riding.
Sorry for the late reply, had an issue getting to my comments. They get quite hot, I can't touch my cases either, typical of an air cooled bike. I got mine so hot one time going too slow on some hilly trails that it wouldn't restart until I let it cool down, definitely not good to do as heat is the engines enemy.
Is the branding a sticker of embossed on the hand guard
It is embossed, not a sticker. Thanks. I believe there is now another company making a similar handguard, the company is named, Molecule. Thanks.
what did you have to trim? I heard the 2016 250f plastics mount right up
Lmk if u find this out
@@ryanallen234 there's a guy who does a lot of SSR content that has a youtube channel and he used them. if you type in SSR 300 he's one of the first guys to pop up
Think its the 2016 450 crf but idk that’s just the matching exhaust
Sorry, I can't remember, but it was very minor from what I can remember.
How did you fix it?
Nice video! I like the fact that you're okay with a factory tune on your bike! Don't get me wrong but if you go too far with mods it gets crazy. Over time I understand but it reminds me of these guys I worked with that had Harleys they were up there buying parts all the time from chrome screws and covers to throttle stuff chromed out. Gee they had thousands in chrome and a pile of parts.
Whats the exhaust model?
Sorry for the late reply. It's a BelParts exhaust that comes stock on the 21 AJP PR4 Extreme. I'm not sure on a model #, sorry.
This pipe melted the zipper on my snake boots
What lowering link from Soupy's did you use?
Never understood the fuel filter thing because there's already one inside the tank.
Nice Video. Thank you for sharing.. I like the Wolfman Bags. They look awsome. 👍🏼
You got some blessed single track out there man… I wanna blast through there with my TE150i
1:40 you don't need to remove the clutch to get to the screws , just ball head allen key and removing the screw one by one will do the trick
Sorry for the late reply. Thanks, you are correct. This is my 3rd DR and I've done it both ways. Takes longer to pull the clutch, but I feel I have better access and can secure the new screws better.
this thing is in ROUGH shape. I respect it
Sorry for the late reply, yes, it does look ruff. just hit 70,000 miles from new. I don't abuse it, but I don't baby it either. This is my 3rd DR too. I kept thinking I wanted something better, maybe just different so I kept selling them, then I would realize how much I missed it and I'd buy another one, lol... The carbs give me the most trouble, seals wear out on the stock one pretty quick and it's downhill from there. I should probably try a pumper, but a friend had one and he had issues jetting it so IDK.
How come at the end of the year you can buy this same bike at dealers here brand new for 6k?? 3k is a big difference.
Nice video, are you aware if Suzuki put loctite on the neutral sending unit screws in 2017 ? I read that somewhere, I’m not sure if there’s any truth to this. Thanks again
Sorry for the late reply. I wish I knew. I've read of people taking them out after that and not seeing any so I'd still have to check to be sure since it would be so bad if they came loose. Not sure why Suzuki wouldn't fix something so simple, probably cost 1 penny.... If you find out, please let me know.
did they fix the lowend off idle bog with the 2021's?
You just gotta re jet the carb
Sorry for the late reply. NO they did not fix it, bad as ever, but as andrew mentioned you can get good results with a rejet. I found that I had to also do the o-ring mod to the accelerator pump. Those 2 things totally got rid of any bog once the bike was warmed up. It rips quite nicely now.
Yes. Full stop. Period. I bought 2 cheap sets and binned them before I bought a NEW set of mojavi and then a second hand coyote for different occasions. Don’t go cheap, it’s not economical in the long run.
Did you forget skid plate? Maybe I missed that part.
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, how could I forget, most important part. At one point, I actually bought 2 thick aluminum ones and glued them together to make a stronger one after watching my buddy come down off a small jump and poke a rock right through his thick aluminum guard and his engine case, dumped 2 quarts of oil right there on the trail, totaled the bike... Now I just don't jump very high if I'm near any rocks.
That’s a great compact concise kit! Good job
Sorry for the late reply. Thanks. I worked on figuring it out for a while, I was actually quite surprised at how light it was and it's really all I need.
@ awesome! Keep it up
Thanks for the product specs!
