I have it on the authority of a retired SAR driver that these were the best locos the SAR had: could handle a wide range of traffic and routes, were ‘a devil on the flat’ and were a joy to fire… and he’s well qualified to say this!

Hi Johan No matter what class locomotive Engineering from those days will never be beaten They were and still are big beautiful mean machines A pity they are in the past but I am proud to say I was a part of it

Wow, I’ve never seen any SAR engine with such a ‘foreign’ band around a flattened dome. Not in keeping with tradition... Thankfully that’s now gone.
