Guitar Picking Stool with Maloof Joint
I wanted to make a stool with a piece of black walnut that has some nice crotch figure. I came across a design by Paul @CanadianWoodworks so I purchased his plans and went to work. Lots of power carving with a Kutzall disc. I finished it with 100% Tung Oil but thinned the first few coats with a citrus solvent. It came out wonderful and it was a good experience to learn how to do the Sam Maloof style joint for the legs. The project is not that hard but does require some router bits. Below are some affiliate links of the supplies I used for this project.
Pica Pencil amzn.to/3VbZn8Y The white led is quite soft but shows up nicely on walnut

3/4" Radius Roundover bit amzn.to/4iaIFAM
Titebond Dark Wood Glue amzn.to/3CSDWDJ
Kutzall Disc amzn.to/3OxrGLp This is the one I used but if the wood is very hard you may find the more coarse disc might be better. I used the flat disc which worked well.
Total Boat Epoxy amzn.to/3D0GJKR I use this for the glue and to fill small holes and cracks. I don't like the mica powder I have to color it black so you are on your own for that one.
Intermediat pads for sander amzn.to/3ZvcMM7 These worked well for conforming to the curves but not for shaping.
Starbond Medium Thick CA Glue amzn.to/4ieLh0o
3M Sandpaper amzn.to/4fMnMuf I really like the 3M Cubitron sandpaper and find it lasts quite a long time. The link is for 120 Grit but I used 80, 120, 150, 180 and 220 grits.
Shinto Rasp amzn.to/3ORKtRX works great for shaping

Picture Frames- What worked and What Didn't
มุมมอง 61821 วันที่ผ่านมา
I'm way overdue on making a picture frame for an award I received from the Navy. I tried three different methods of making the corners meet up and the table saw sled was the clear winner. Initially I was going to dye my frame but ended up going clear but did end up staining the second frame. This video goes through what I found worked for me and what I would avoid in the future next time I make...
Shop Tour 2024
มุมมอง 3.9Kหลายเดือนก่อน
It's been a couple years since my last shop tour and there have been plenty of changes so I have done a new shop tour of my woodworking shop. New tools and general layout of the shop including some mistakes that I have made in the past on some projects and some things I really like for the shop that you should keep in mind for your wood shop.
Miter Saw Station Build

I have needed a new miter saw for a while now and thought this would be a good opportunity to make a miter saw station for my wood shop. I'm not a fan of building cabinets so I bought some plans off another TH-camr and started building. I tried to do a few things to make the whole process a bit simpler on myself and in this video I share what went well and what didn't. In the end I think it loo...
Black Walnut Coffee Table

I made this Black Walnut Coffee table for a lady that gave me some Walnut Logs last summer that I milled up on my sawmill. Once they dried in my barn and went through my solar kiln I reached out to her and asked if I could make her something. She chose a coffee table and picked out some tables she liked that I previously made in my woodshop. This Black Walnut slab has beautiful figure and made ...
Good and Bad Walnut on the sawmill
มุมมอง 9043 หลายเดือนก่อน
I sawed up a walnut logs on the sawmill. When they are short like these it does make it awkward since they fall between my squaring jigs. In the end I did well with one log and not so good with the other. One log has too much rot but the other has some beautiful crotch figuring to it. The down side to the good log is that it really has limited woodworking uses like table tops. Anyways, enjoy th...
Sawing up a Cherry log and attacked by a Raccoon
มุมมอง 4194 หลายเดือนก่อน
I was given some cherry logs and one log had a crotch at one end so I cut it up using my Cooks MP32 sawmill hoping there would be some nice figure at the crotch end. Cherry doesn't sell so well around me but I like it. I also had an unfortunate run it with a raccoon that is raising her babies in my barn.

Time to get the sawmill up and running again. I have some white oak and cherry to get through and this is the biggest cherry log I have come across locally. Grain Matching Box
มุมมอง 5778 หลายเดือนก่อน
I wanted a bit of practice with my hand planes and attempted a continuous grain box. It sort of worked with the spalting but it was a bad choice of wood since the Maple I chose didn't have much grain to it. There were a few issues along the way but it did turn out nice and my wife has claimed it for herself.
Foley Saw Sharpener
มุมมอง 1.7K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
I recently could not pass up a deal on this Foley 61 saw sharpener for the wood shop. It's a bit overkill for the amount of hand tool woodworking I do but it's fun to watch. I use the sharpener to touch up a Disston and Sons back saw that has a couple issues. Enjoy!

That is one good looking piece. Wonder if it goes for sale? I like the way the legs came out.
Yes!!! This is one of my top dream builds, the maloof joint guitar stool!!! So excited to watch
i have watched hundreds of videos on table making, furniture repair, interested in both, and you
Thank you for watching!
I really like how your Miter Saw Station turned out. What height is your overall countertop to accommodate your drawer setup?
It's 36.75" overall height. It works pretty good and I'm 5'10" tall.
Sucks you couldn't get a good 45 with that awesome new miter saw. I probably purposefully do thin frames so the cut doesn't matter as much. Great work.
I’m fine with it. You can adjust them but since I mainly just use it for breaking down material it works. I seem to be moving to sleds and shooting boards anyhow.
I think we can all relate to racking up the battery count!
A couple new batteries took care of that problem.
Awesome weights for the glue up.
And they work like they should.. Might be time for some new duct tape though.
Great video Thank you!
Thanks for watching.
Great tips on the shooting board. The figure really came out when you milled the maple down.
I was surprised on how much it came out with just the lacquer. Thanks
Good video Paul! Maybe you are on to something with the goat nose finish 🤣
You never know where the next trend will come from.
I liked the part where chatty Paul and productive Paul appear at the same time.

Nice tour. If only you had an industrial strength rumba robot. Or a shop maid/steward.
I had a cleaner, his name was Andy but he moved away.
Too funny
Thanks!
Gorgeous!
Thank you!
Nice shop. Just found this channel. Live in Hixson. After work I’ll take a look at your videos. Have a good day. I do a lot of CNC, laser and epoxy along with some traditional woodworking. Have a nice day
We need to get together and talk shop.. Always good to meet other woodworkers in the area.
@ yes sir it would be fun.
love the shop, pretty awesome. what dark wood were you sawmilling in that clip of it, possibly pecan?
That was a walnut log and it's in the barn air drying now. I think it's going to make some awesome tables because there was lots curl in it. I did a video of it and it's on my channel and called Good Walnut Bad Walnut th-cam.com/video/vNXj2GKmosk/w-d-xo.html

Nice shop with nice equipment. Thanks for sharing.

Great shop. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching.
Your shop is amazing! 😮
Thanks Annie!!
Thanks for great experience! Could you share your experience about drying to extreme low humidity? I mean 6-8% final humidity. For example: the load of kiln is twice more than in your video with 2" oak lumber with start humidity 26%. How much time will it take to dry to 6-8% during summer period?
The short answer is about a month but... If it's white oak I would let the moisture drop down further in my barn before putting it in the kiln. White Oak really likes to hold onto its moisture and I wouldn't want to case harden the wood so I would wait until the White Oak drops down to the equilibrium moisture content for my area which is 13% before finishing it off in the kiln and would still dry it quite slowly with the vents open and just shut the vents to get the temperature as high as possible at the end of the process. In that scenario it would only take a couple of weeks. Hope that helps..
@@hillbillychic3933 Thank! That really helps! I know the rule for white oak to lose less 1% of moisture per day to avoid cracks and internal tension. If you have a little of time please answer: what was the highest temperature in your kiln? I have doubt that policarbonate will survive in sunny summer day with shut vents.
@@ДмитрийСимакович-ы8л The highest temperature I have seen in my kiln is about 60C (140F) but I think that could be improved by taking care of some gaps in the doors. You are correct, the polycarbonate does not like the heat that much and tends to expand and warp a bit which would be another loss of heat. Glass would be better but much more expensive but there also may be another alternative out there.
I love the look of face frame cabinets, but you probably lost a half inch or more to your drawer height. Actually all that room is available inside the cabinet, the face frame just planes off the contents at the opening. No chance of using the heating system as a cooler as well? I bet you'd have to dig deep for geothermal to find cold dirt.
Between the face frames and the bottom thickness I certainly did lose a 1/2" but 4 or 5 inch depth would have been better. I have thought about burying a loop of Pex out in the yard because do have the extra spot in the manifold that I could lock off in winter. If I ever get the chance I will give it a try but unfortunately it wouldn't do anything about the humidity. Another project to the list.
Very nice
Thanks!
How do you really feel about building cabinets, shop looks tidy. Keep it up.
Tidier than normal but don't look behind the camera.
Bert & Ernie are goats......Bert & Ernie are also two storage racks. I didn't even recognize the racks when you showed them installed where they had been used. Most cool
If only I could utilize Bert and Ernie to do a little sanding.. Now that would be something.
Seeing this title from you was like ordering salad for breakfast and the waitress brought chocolate cake! ( love that waitress )
Glad you enjoyed it! Who doesn't like a little chocolate cake for breakfast!
Have you checked the temps during the summer to see if it gets hot enough to sterilize the lumber?
yes I have and made a video about it too.. th-cam.com/video/IId584cURWM/w-d-xo.html
I have the same miter saw and bought the dust port from Shop Nation, extremely please with it, well designed and improved the collection dramatically. Well done sir!
Thanks for watching! Mine finally came in the mail and is installed. It's certainly an improvement over the factory dust collection.
Beautiful work, I appreciate the commentary too. Great and inspiring work!
Much appreciated! Thank you.
Boom!! Now you are a cabinet builder.
an unexpected and unwanted title.. Thanks though.
I don't know why people think they need a fence for a miter saw the only fence you want your board to make contact is the one on the miter saw.
We'll see how it goes.. I mostly use it to break down lumber so I don't think I'll miss it.
Great video! I really like the way you get information across in a calm no nonsense way, so refreshing. The mitre saw station is one of the best I’ve seen 👌👌👌👌
Thank you very much!
That station looks amazing!!
Thank you!
Finally, someone did the narrating easy to follow lol. Great vid!
Glad you liked it!
Great build. How wide is your miter saw platform?
34" but maybe should have been 36 because it's pretty tight when I go beyond 45 degrees.
Nice work, enjoyed the video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done. Face frames are the hardest to make, but they do hold up nicely. Drawers are the worst.
Agreed!
Nice work. Where did you get your plywood from?
Rugby here in Soddy-Daisy.
That was funny....." A while before I make another..." I don't blame you. That was a bunch of work but they came out great!
Thanks.. I 'm glad it's over and I'm already on to the next project.
@@hillbillychic3933 no surprise about being onto the next project. When you have a cool mitre stand like that, I would be itching to get to use it.
We've been interested in that Bosch, and we really need a proper station, very timely video!
So far so good with it and the aftermarket dust collector showed up today.
Good job Paul. Yes, it looks like ash. I agree with you on cabinets, I find them both brain numbing and brain confusing 🤣 I would be interested in hearing if the Bosch stays aligned/cutting true. I like its space saving design. Stay dry from the storm...or have a sub handy.
We had 5" of rain in the last 24 hours. We needed it but over a 5 week period would have been better.
ooooooh, This one looks like it is going to take a while. ( I'm just at the first commercial so far )
It did.. you weren't wrong..
@@hillbillychic3933 I ended up playing the video through three times. I had to step away and forgot to pause it on the second go round. I didn't realize FORMICA had gone up in price that much. The edge cut...or whatever that would be called....detail? is nice. I like that I used to use red oak for counter top edges years ago.
I just bought a 4x8 sheet of Formica from Home Depot for $56, online. Although, I bet pricing is location based
@@MikeP-14 What are you making with the 4 x 8? I went to the Annapolis Boat Show a long long time ago. You basically are invited to walk around some swanky big boats. I was lucky, and had a very attractive girlfriend in tow so we were invited onto all the big boats. I noticed in the bathrooms.... ( I'm not even close when it comes to owning a massive boat...so it is a bathroom and not a "head". Ahead is a direction I would like life to go ). The ceilings had mirrors making the tiny space look larger. This gave me the idea to use high gloss, special order, FORMICA white to cover the ceilings of my bathrooms. Never paint again, and just wipe the ceiling off once in a blue moon. 5 x 10 were the sheets I would order. Long story for what could of been said in one sentence. "Every put FORMICA on a bathroom ceiling?"
@@Dancing_Alone_wRentals I am building a workbench for my garage with all of the storage underneath. Honestly, I haven’t thought about Formica in a bathroom or ceiling, but that could be really handy if you’re remodeling a trailer or something and going to use it for rent. I’m not sure if I’d like the smooth surface on a ceiling. Having said all that, I have been thinking about all of the ways that FORMICA could be used, but I think I’m the only one that thinks it might good viable in certain scenarios.
That clears up any lingering doubts..........the block plane..... always the block plane. 😉
Exactly!
nice wood - I have 30 Walnut logs that I have to figure out what to do with them?
Find a local sawyer and make a deal although 30 is probably enough to get a commercial company interested.
Love a man that has such high hopes about things. My guess is that those logs were worth the most as firewood. Problem is that you can't even put the ash in the garden!! Walnut is a toxin to other plants.
So your saying $15 a board foot for Walnut that has a lot a figure in it is high hopes? Most of that sold a long time ago but I did keep the best ones for myself so we might never know.
Best trestle table video. Technique, dimensions, etc. Same type table that I want. Question about the upright/horizontal support members glueup. Is the upright piece allowed to expand and contract across the grain? An assembly similar to breadboard ends might be better. Elongated holes through the tenon for the two outside dowels. Glue only the center few inches. Also a shopmade breadboard end jig to route the tenon.
Looking back at the video the tenons were somewhat loose fitting but I did not take that into account. I think I probably got lucky and since I made this during the summer the fit would only get looser as the humidity drops. I also don't think I oversized the hole on the tenons to allow for expansion. Live and learn.. The table is holding up well but I do wish I had painted the upright red oak pieces black. I'm not really liking the pinkish hue that the red oak has.

They are from the manufacturer of the sawmill and I've been happy with them. cookssaw.com/cant-hook/
