Fatal Strategies, Ep. 2: Svein Egil Hatlevik (Fleurety, Zweizz, et al.)
My guest on this episode is Svein Egil Hatlevik-founding member of Fleurety (“the Steely Dan of post-Norwegian black metal”), ex-member of Dødheimsgard, current member of Stagnant Waters, and sole member of Zweizz.
Here, we talk about everything from coming of age (and forming Fleurety) in the early ‘90s and prank calling Helvete (the infamous black metal record store in Oslo) to collaborating via the internet and making music at his computer (as Zweizz). We also talk about AI-generated music, his contributions to DHG’s classic 666 International album, and his take on the meaning of “true black metal.”

I was in SF 90-96 + visited regulary for another 10 years so this was a great memory jogging listen. I was introduced to Peter by Brian Hall who was a mutual music friend. We were going to see a showing of The Residents - The Eye Screams at the Mill Valley Film Festival & Peter drove us. I was going to The Heinz regularly and saw that 1st Monopause show + tons of other incredible bands like Thinking Fellers, Caroliner, Little My, Big Butter, Sun City Girls, Fibulator, Molecules, Vacuum Tree Head, Three Day Stubble, Ubzub, Helios Creed, MX-80, Dos (Mike Watt & Kira), Ruins, C.C.C.C., Splatter Trio, etc. Also went to some of those warehouse gigs in Oakland + plenty warehouse & bar show in SF at spots like The Chameleon, Hotel Utah, Covered Wagon, Olive Oils, Thirsty Swede, Kilowatt, etc It was a fantastic time to see fun & genre expanding local music + being able to see bigger more known touring bands too. Jesus I even got to see Sun Ra & his Arkestra play on Halloween at Slims. While I haven't kept in regular touch with Peter I do see him occasionally when he has played Seattle with Negativland & when Monopause/Neung Phak & Avikko came through. His talent & the work he has done in archiving/remastering & releasing mostly Bay Area underground music should really be applauded. And to anyone read this far please look him up on discogs for another way to find how much he has been involved with.
