Forging a Tomahawk or Trade Axe With A Forge Welded Bit: A Busy Weekend of Blacksmithing
In this video, I forge a traditional tomahawk or trade axe. This tomahawk was made using a traditional wrapped eye method, very typical for axes carried by fur trappers in the 1800's. A really neat historical project that was a lot of fun to make. Comment down below if you have any questions. Thanks for watching!

That hawk turned out nice. Now you gotta get a block to throw at and practice your throwing skills. Personally I don’t like putting too much time into my handles because I know I’m just going to break them when I practice throwing. Thanks for making the vid.

I just attended an early colony larp. Learned that steel had to be maximized at trading posts. Apparently, the native Americans loved European steel and so the pioneers traded their camp hatchets and skining knives for pelts (in addition to smallpox and measles). Eventually, it became standard practice to stock trading posts with thin knives and small axes. It would be cool to see you do some trading post knives. They were often hot rolled to get an even thickness and "stretch" the steel. Makes a lot of sense of you think about it. Steel is heavy and you can only Cary so much on a ship.

Loved watching this, brother, thanks for filming and editing. You have a tool you can pass down the ages to your progeny. Awesome and looks like a lot of hard work (and fun!). God bless.

How does your propane forge get hot enough to forge weld? Mine gets close but it’s just barely not enough.

I manage with the cheapest single burner from devil-forge. Maybe set pressure higher and add more air?

Looks good! I noticed you have two propane tanks going to your forge. What did you use to connect them together into one regulator?

I've attempted a few of these now using different methods with varying degrees of success. Thank you for your detailed explanation. Will try this and suspect it will be superior to my attempts. Wife is not happy about me clearing off her sewing table though. You should probably omit that from your tutorial. Will be checking out your other vids. Cheers

Knocking stuff off your wife's table is part of the forge welding process. She will have to understand ;) Good luck! Message me on IG if you would like help

Yes definitely, oven tempering is a rough process anyways so if you keep an eye on it and watch the color you will be good
