Lionhead Restorations
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 พ.ย. 2012
Just a regular guy who enjoys saving old tools from being forgotten. I try my hardest to restore them to better than factory condition. I hope sharing my experience helps someone take the leap and try it for themselves. I learn something new almost every day and hope that we can grow the restoration community together.

That’s a work of art! I’m an axe guy and you’ve definitely inspired me to step up my axe builds!
I truly appreciate the compliment. Honestly, I'm just a guy learning every day and trying to make each hang better than the last.
Nice video, and good result! Making several parallell sawcuts to remove material is a good technique. But be careful and don’t cut too close to the line, if the grain runs into the shape. You can just use a hammer to knock the bits out, and come in with the drawknife again after that. Another thing you would find useful is a shavehorse. It makes working with the drawknife a lot easier.
Excellent outcome.. functional beauty..
@charlesq6148 it is an absolute beautiful axe that I look forward to talking into the woods. I appreciate you checking out the video
Hey brother, I love the collection and your content. I've done my best to promote your channel on a couple bigger groups on Facebook. I sure hope we can get you up over a thousand subscribers. Good luck and good day.
@@justinwoodhouse7511 I truly appreciate you and everything you have done to help promote my channel. Thank you.
Great hang man, watching you is the next best thing than working on my own tools. Keep up the great content.
@justinwoodhouse7511 that's a heck of a compliment, I truly appreciate it. Hopefully my videos help encourage others to get out and try tool restorations for themselves. Have a great day.
Cool stuff Ryan, what a collection! I'm not really an "axe guy", but I can see where you get your passion for collecting and restoring, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for checking out the first video in my axe collection series. I love all tools, but there is something special about axes for me. I truly think it's because of all the time I spent using them in the outdoors when I was younger.
Awesome!!!!! can't wait to see the rest! down sizing for work?!
@djstoolrestorations yes, I will be traveling again and, unfortunately, downsizing.
Very cool man! You have some sweet axes! I'm jealous lol.
@@TheCandBExperience i have been fortunate to trade and find a few cool things. I have some really cool heads from England coming up in a few videos.
@ I’ll be watching.
Sweet collection Brother
I appreciate that. You've only seen half of the hung axes
That jer-necticut is still one of my favorite mods!
@@RedBeard_KNT it is definitely a cool axe. Thank you.
I'm in. Nice collection.
Awesome. I will put out a video after I get the mask made talking about the giveaway that everyone can comment on. That video will be the one I do the random drawing from. Thanks for checking out my video
Sweet, got an axe handle separating the same way…. Might have to try pining it the same way…
@AkPacerPilot just make sure your bit and wooden dowell are the same size. Lol. I've actually done this on a few axe handles, and it's worked really well
@ yup… on that note, pretty awesome to see someone own a mistake and how to fix that kind of mistake. Because we all make mistakes doing this kind of work…
Yesssss thank you!! I think I asked that question? LOL. Also, I have this thing where I need to hang all my axes LOL. I have that same HB cruiser on an octagon handle, so don’t think the one I got is original LOL
I don't think I have ever seen an HB on an original handle that was octagon. Most likely a new handle
Amazing axes and great vid bro Can’t believe 25$ for that flint edge lol
I know right. If only all my axe heads were that cheap.
thats awsome would love to buy a cruiser from you , also i need a sheath for my axe do you sale them
I'm currently in a moving transition. I would not be able to make a mask for a while. If you hit me up @ lionheadrestorations I will be more than glad to work something out with you.
Excellent video man!!!! Gotta love that cruiser lineup! Looking forward to the upcoming parts!
Yah I love cruisers. Probably 3 more parts.
The original woodslasher cruser is the perfect axe for the giveaway!
Right on. I originally wanted to hang one, but then found this all original Woodslasher. I just cleaned it up and put a nice edge on the bits.
You have an absolutely beautiful collection man. I'm so excited to see the axe heads next. I love your crusers. I found one at the flea market Sunday evening I really liked but he won't take anything lower than 90. If I get it I'll message you some pics of it.
I appreciate that. My collection isn't as big as some but it's mine. I think cruiser are one of my favorite patterns. I lost a bidding war on eBay last week but I wasn't going over a certain amount. The TT Black Prince cruiser went for over $100. I didn't need it that bad lol
@_BigLife_ I don't think I've ever paid that for a vintage axe. Well ok other than a tassie. But this is a true temper flint edge kelly works all original cruiser with the paint still on the head and handle in like new condition. I'm conflicted. It's so nice. He may not even have it anymore, idk. I think i seen the one your talking about. Alot of those made their way to Canada.
@MountainMenAxes Tassies are a different story. Sounds like your guy as a nice cruiser. Tough call.
Interesting video! Thanks Mate 🥃 👍 😊
I truly appreciate you checking it out. One more hung axe installment next week and then axe heads I haven't hung yet. Some really cool ones from England coming up.
Wow awesome video all around man! That was quite the tree and you definitely put those axes through their paces. I can’t imagine how men used to do that day in and day out day after day for years.
@@ToolsandTime it was definitely a workout. I'm sure the men who fell trees for a living were in better shape than I am. I truly appreciate you watching the video
Every time that you said it looked tacky I thought you were talking about aesthetically not sticky sticky. Lol
@brianthomason5022 makes me think of my grandmother. She always said "that's tacky"
You have skill, I am rewatching trying to learn how to make a handle myself, had to call Shelly in to see Remi, when he was on!
I will be doing more handles in the future. One thing I forgot to show in this video is drawing a control line down the center of the handle so you have a reference point
@@_BigLife_ I am looking for wood to use, going to try some cheap stuff first to see how I do, hate to screw up a high dollar piece of wood!!!!!
I like how you fixed it, something I would do! Shelly loves REMI! Days off so catching up on your videos!
I'm really trying to figure out how to fit him in the videos more often
@@_BigLife_ Well Shelly is his biggest FAN!
From British Columbia, great job buddy.
I appreciate that
Heck yeah man! Great job and it's holding up just fine.
I'm honestly surprised I was working it hard. I'm trying to make it break
Looks and works great! Curious what type of wood dowels are made of? I would of been scratch n my head? Hmm porous and soft or hard and ridged?
honestly, I don't know what kind of wood the dowels were made out of. I just bought them from my local hardware store. If I had to guess, I would say that they were relatively soft
I was going to text you. But to help with the Al Gore's rhythm... At 8:00 Harley saw Remy, got excited and started barking 🤣
Lol shelley watches camping videos, and everytime dogs come up, Remi, gets excited
I think the wedge jumped out on you because it was to thick or not enough gap in the kurd .also I think the blo lubes it up touch . Let soak in for a few and not so much . This just my experience.
The wedge was hung proud on purpose. It did move at all. Very solid hang. I have actually cut a large live Oak down with it and the head never moved
@_BigLife_ I mean the first wedge.
@townieoutdoors8121 i actually forgot about that. First time that has ever happened. I think you are right. It was a little think.
You obviously did a pretty good job for it to hold up to all of that! That's very impressive! Great job.
I have had luck pinning cracked handles before so I hope this continues to hold up.
I just picked one up at the Hamilton woodworking show. Getting tired of corrections to my handplane blades, using hone with very narrow wheel for a year now, blades never true. Can't wait to try it. Thanks for the video
It's very handy. I'm glad I went with this one instead of one with a narrow wheel. Let me know how you like it.
No free lunch on that one. Nice work
@hotboxpizzatruck i'm in tight with the foreman, at least I got breaks. Thanks for checking out the video.
The best way to honor our ancestors is following God's will. The second best way is by raising descendants who you teach appropriately. God bless you man! Never overestimate the goodness planned for you. It will come, and it will be better than you could have planned for yourself.
@Hadronion0 I feel blessed to have been raised buy parents who taught me of the love our creator has for us.
where did you source your bloodwood Brother?
Rockler
Bravo brother, I love seeing wood chips fly.
@@justinwoodhouse7511 it was definitely a fun workout
Stunning work brother Boz… that blood wood really looks good, I know your father would be proud of the work you did on that beautiful axe. Keep on living life to its fullest!!
Thanks brother. I know he would love it and enjoy using it in the woods if he was still here. Take care of that family and stay safe.
@ as always… just trying to keep the family warm, we already have a foot and a half of that white stuff on the ground…
@AkPacerPilot bet it's beautiful
@ it’s beautiful all year up here, summer, winter, the few weeks of summer- fall that we get. Winter is a lot of work though, snow removal…
@AkPacerPilot have not been able to talk my wife into moving yet
Great job on that axe. Turned out beautifully. Thanks for sharing and have a good one.
I truly appreciate you stopping buy to see what I have been up too. The boy scout hatchets preservation you just did turned out really nice. Hope you enjoy the rest of your week.
Awesome
@@colehecker8418 thank you
Can you do a video on your wood block in your vise
@@emd1823 I actually have a video on making that. Let me see if I can add the link here
th-cam.com/video/8tjmnZrvnkw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dsZXH2vswzRmDKpn
@@_BigLife_ Awesome thank you!
@emd1823 hope that helps. I will add that I do like the way the leather lining helps hold multiple different tools.
Ryan, that is beautiful! Your love of the process really comes across in your videos, especially on this one knowing it was a dedication to your Dad.
@westhighlandsshop thank you David. I do love restoring and using axes. This one is extremely special to me.
Nice work my man, a quick chamfer on anything being struck will save you time and frustration. I also noticed the grain of the wedge is horizontal rather than vertical. The little things make a big difference.
I truly appreciate you watching the video. I did not notice the grain orientation until I was editing the video, and I think that's why it shattered on me the way it did.
The in loving memory hit me buddy. I just lost my mother so seeing that hit home. It looks fantastic! I'm sorry to hear about your father passing. The pain that I feel is only cured by the love Jesus gives me. Mom is at peace and so is your father buddy. We are still in the flesh they have been made perfect. No sin, sickness, illness, or hatred exist in Heaven. Only Ĝods perfect Holy Love.
I'm truly sorry for your loss, I know it can be tough. I'm just thankful for that ultimate gift of salvation. Because of that, I have peace about everything.
Dude what a wet dream of an axe! Waiting on your collection video! Make it a series like Nate did! LOL
I truly appreciate that. I think it's a pretty cool axe. I will see what I can do to share my collection. It's not as extensive as some.
When you cut your wedges. Make sure you’re grain goes top to bottom on the wedge. Not side to side on it.
I truly didn't think anyone was gonna catch that. I honestly didn't notice until I edited the video. I know it should go vertical. It's just something I missed when I was filming. I truly appreciate you watching and paying attention.
@@_BigLife_ I wasn’t trying to cause any issue with the comment. I’m just an axe junky trying to help. I love watching your content
No I truly appreciate you watching and helping with your input. I do know better, it was something I just overlooked and I'm sure that is why the wedge came apart like it did. Thanks again for watching and commenting. It helps everyone.
@ I had a thought come to mind. I haven’t done it forever. Laminating skateboards together. Makes really nice wedges. normally every guy got four or five old skateboards laying around.
@aprilnichols2806 i have seen people laminate, skateboards and make furniture, and I thought about doing the same thing for wedges, and possibly throwing hatchet handles
That’s an great looking handle bro
Thank you
Very nice man!!!! I'm impressed that it held up so well with that hard use!!!
I was looking forward to hanging it again, but I'm also interested to see how long it holds up.
The bloody knuckle means it’s ready. Or you’re not a fan of bitch stickers
You really went all out on this project! You are doing an excellent job. As someone who uses bondo and two part knife grade epoxies as a profession for granite countertops for the last 15 years. The hardener I usually go with a 2% rule. So 2% hardener of the amount of bondo or knife grade you are using. I usually go with a pea size amount but it also depends on the weather, temperature, moisture in the air, and temperature of what its going on.
Definitely a possibility that I used too much harder. I'm learning. I truly appreciate you checking out the video and sharing your knowledge on the subject.
When i first started doing auto body repair 35 years ago i was taught in school to think of the filler as a clock face and to put the harder in a single line from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock. Body filler hardens fast but yours appears to be hardening really fast. Sometimes when the weather is cooler i set my spray paint can in hot water to warm up the paint inside the can and it seems to help with the paint flow. I generally stick with Rustoleum, Krylon or the Ace hardware brand paints. Hope this helps. The vise looks awesome in white! It's a showpiece. Nicely done Ryan
Thanks for the tips. I truly appreciate it. I really appreciate the information and comments. I know you have been watching for some time now, and I appreciate that.
Beautiful dog. That is a cool vise. Thanks for sharing your expertise
@@michaellindsay8934 I truly appreciate you watching.
He is my boy. Stubborn some times but great dog.
The welt is just in there to make up for the blade thickness on the top of the blade
@terrysheets6173 that's what I figured but it doesn't make sense. The rivets damaged the edge because of repeated contact.
