Good to see you lot back on the water. Great start with the Merlin & R300 vying for the lead while the Earl of Edgbaston was sent scurrying back for a false start. Very gentlemanly of you two to move over & let him win on the last leg.
I enjoy the racing coverages so thank you for posting them. I try to keep up with the rights but at 5:25 why did the boat on the left have to do a 360 when it was the leeward boat? Was it to do with the imaginary circle?
The blue boat wasn't allowed to go above head to wind, and so couldn't get around without hitting the mark, so the 360 was due to that.
@@MSCracing-gg3yj Gotchya. Thanks for that.
When is the first Merlin Race the Double D will be racing in come next year?
Not looked at the fixtures for next year yet tbh. We have a few winter events on the agenda so hopefully will have some footage of them soon!
The white boat clearly fouled the blue boat. The blue boat was entitled to mark room, which white did not give. Blue wouldn't have hit the mark if white had not fouled blue. Blue did not need to do a 360 see RRS 43.1, and white should be DSQ.
I was in the blue boat, and suspect you have missed the fact that we couldn't get round without going above head to wind. If we had gone above head to wind we would have fouled white, so we took the option to go as high as we could and try and make it round. In doing this we hit the mark, so a 360 was required.
@@MSCracing-gg3yj But you didn't go above head to wind. You can pinch as high as you like as leeward boat and windward must keep clear. This includes room for you to maneuver. You also had mark room. White failed to keep clear and there was contact. The contact forced your bow down, into the mark. Even if you couldn't make the mark, you still have rights, until you go head to wind. You were definitely fouled.
Briliant, and what a crew you have.
Hmm 8:07 : was that a bit of boom end action on the mark…? 😉
Ha ha oops yes looks like it. Wish I had spotted that so I could edit it out, I didn't realise we had done that!
The good ship _Double D_ left all & sundry in their wake in this one.
Phantom of the Lake feasted on three lame hares.
love the cheeky outro
Was that last Saturday?
Yes, Saturday just gone (18th October)
@@MSCracing-gg3yj ah I took a picture of the race towards the end if you want it
Sensazione frantastica. Bello il fruscio del vento, ero in barca con voi. Buon vento e bona onda❤
Cracking stuff that.
You still haven't relocated your anchor😆
Why was the blue boat lucky at end of race?
They were a long way behind, and got a gust the the lead boat didn't get. That let them close the gap and the lead boat couldn't do anything about it
Nice race; you made great ground up on that run when the squall came on.
What's the registered number on your wooden Solo?
It's 3410 I think, but this is a mate sailing so I'm not certain!
Another notch on the Earl of Edgbaston's gunwale.
I thought you were wearing jeans😂
So they had to do a 360?
It's actually me sailing the blue boat. We got a big backer as we got close to the mark, so tried to get round without going above head to wind, but hit the mark in the process
Bit of midland banger racing? 😂
What camera are you using ?
It's an Insta360 One X2

a lot of pumping going on

The Earl of Edgbaston is back in the saddle & leaving the Hare in his wake.
Wow, that's crazy. I have to try this, but I'm very scared … Maybe on easy mode with just hanked on but pulled above the waterline rudder … Thanks a lot for posting this!
Give it a go! As long as you aren't too close to other boats the worse that can happen is that you spin around!
@@MSCracing-gg3yj tried it today since I also tested a new paddle (alternate propulsion when no wind). But the wind was too shifty and I didn't get anything going. Will try another day, thought. This is sooo cool!
well done on this video. very informative. love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Consider having the jib eased slightly first before the main in the little puffs, it can allow you to feather up without losing power, and therefore boat speed, out of the main. Overall good first upwind leg just should have made lay on that, it kept lifting you on the port tack so you could have gone further expecting the knock on starboard so you wouldnt have to tack twice! Hope this helps but fun video to watch!
Thanks for the tips, certainly something to think about, although the Merlin jib is relatively small so may not have enough of an effect. Yes definitely a few errors on the layline, we wouldn't have had to carry on long to lay, and we could also have identified we weren't laying sooner!
About here would be a good spot to dub in some canned applause as if coming from the clubhouse @5:30
Best video yet. Enjoyable racing. You guys were 'on song'. Until your namesake kicked in.
ORSONNNNNNNNNNNNNN
Europe
As you two passed each other at "that mark" did I see them chortling about your team's name? Never mind, nothing wrong with 2nd.
Ha ha, they may have been. It's actually the boat name, so we need to get a sticker made up, as its not on there at the moment!
Tacks and gibes looking pretty clean. Got some decent speed, too. That rs300 looks like a big version of my mx ray.
😂
A real kneezy dinghy those Phantoms. Well done to the Phantom & solo for relegating the hare to third.
Noob here: what kind of boat are you sailing?
Hi, it's called a Merlin Rocket, a UK 2 person dinghy.
Swanning around the start doesn't get the excitement up like coming round the last marks with other boats still in front & you've got to fly like the wind to win. Are pursuit races ancient history at the MSC?
I think at the moment we only do one a year on boxing day. There are some other pursuit races on during the winter, so I'll see if I can get to one or 2 for you!
Wow! I had no idea you could do this on YT. Why aren't you famous? Nice start, BTW.
Ha ha thanks, it's just a shame that TH-cam ruins the quality - the 360 videos look as good as the others before they are uploaded!
What type of action camera do you use? Sail fast!
It's an Insta360 X2
Youngy’s Ent was going pretty well though 😉
Midland SC?
Yep
Great roll tack technique
Wish they had club races where faster boats start after the siren e.g RS 300 crosses the start line two mins. behind the pack & so on.
I agree. It’s not much fun being in a much Slower Class and sitting in dirty air the entire first beat.
That would be called a pursuit race where the different boats start at a time after the gun depending on how fast they are. This race is a personal handicap menagerie race :)
@@BananaPajama We usually have a pursuit race on Sundays at our club. Based on handicap I start about 15 minutes before our Commodore and he still laps me before the 75 minutes are up!
We did used to do pursuit races at the club, but handicap racing (we do average lap racing) gives much better starting practice, so we switched. It's good to have some starting practice if you plan to do events like Salcombe! Agree that it isn't great for slower classes, but equally pursuit races favour slower classes, as the faster boats have to do a lot of overtaking! Class racing is the only fair racing of course!
@@MSCracing-gg3yj For a spectator cramped starts do look good. And the battle around the last couple of drums to the line is exiting to watch when it's tight. Howzabout one or two pursuits a week?
Love the boat looks like a very sound design. How did you capture the video it looks too steady to have been tired to the rudder and yet you filmed to from back that direction?
It's captured on an Insta360 X2 attached to the rudder. The stabilisation of the camera makes it look steady compared to the movement of the rudder.
Any more Merlin competition races coming up before the summer is gone?
The national championships are on now, but we couldn't make it this year. There are a few open meetings we plan to get too, but no major events really. I'll try and get some footage from any opens we do
As previously stated I have just done the RYA 1 and 2 also just about got to grips with a Pico. Do you think a 300 is to be avoided at all costs 😳
Probably worth gaining more experience in something like a Laser first. Once you are confident in the Laser then no reason you can't try a 300, but it will be a steep learning curve.
