1979: Florida - Alabama
1979 Charley Pell Show, Florida vs. Alabama.
I was at this game at Florida Field. Charley Pell was trying to find something, anything to use to build a Foundation for his team. The Alabama Wishbone was at the height of its success. This show is fun to watch, considering especially what is to follow.

Historic Game. Lou Holtz has left Minnesota and the John Gutekunst Era arrives. Larry Beckish, one of the Fathers of the Trap Option, is the Offensive Coordinator. Danny Ford is running the Show at Clemson. Plays only, as Historical Value for Study of the Trap Option Offense especially. I derive no income or value from this Video. This is for the good of Football.

1994 Rice-Houston. Houston played Rice's Wishbone/Spread Option with a 4/4i Technique. This gives some teams problems but here the Play-Side Guard "Scoops" with the Tackle to deny the DT his Slant and allows a good angle for the OT to pick off the LB.

Nonetheless, the "Three Way Option" later known more commonly as the "Houston Veer" is on display. No Tight End, Split Back Triple Option with a well coordinated Pocket Pass Package. Great Stuff!!! We scored on last play of game to make the betting line. 41-0...this was a great defensive team but needed a little more offensive firepower. Lost two games by 3 (a fumble on their three yd line) and 7 points (fumble on OUR one yard line). Would have loved to have seen this team play Georgia that year. I think we could have won.

    I was at that game. Some dude snatched my best friend’s Alabama hat off of his head. We chased him until he dropped it. It was chaos getting out of the parking lot. We saw two cars that neither one would give way to merge, so they ran into each other and were trying to push the other car out of the way. Once out on the interstate, it must have been 16 lanes, the traffic would take off at 90 mph, then come to a complete stop, then take off again. It was a crazy experience. Roll Tide!

    The Bear reportedly liked CP personally and took his foot off the petal after going up 40-0 in the first half. It's the only time I remember Bryant completely calling off the dogs so early in a game. I always supposed that he didn't want to damage CP's chances of succeeding at UF or just didn't want to embarrass him unnecessarily. Maybe both. It's hard to imagine that happening in today's SEC.

    I'll never forget this game. I used to sell 'Growl Towels'(for $5) outside of the Stadium. I remember an East Carolina fan buying one from me and he showed me an East Carolina Towel and we 'compared' towels and his towel was way better. 'Growl Towels' were very thin compared to ECU's 'Towel'. East Carolina wasn't intimidated at all by playing at 'Florida Field'. ECU had a great season in '83. They went 8-3 and the 3 losses were against Florida,FSU and Miami. Their 'Center',Terry Long was the Strongest(supposedly)player in College Football that year. They could've won each game that they lost. Research this, you will be surprised 😉 ECU was 'No Joke' in '83.

    HELLO EVERYONE -- Deb Henson Posted twice below and I want to disagree slightly. Southern Miss has had some very good teams, they just had to scratch and claw their way up the ladder. Collier's career was a bit star-crossed but later there was that Favre guy and others. Bobby Collins found maybe a little too much success at SMU with McIlhenny and the Pony Express. "Anything for an edge" doesn't always work in the end. Alabama had the athletes for certain but the Alabama Wishbone and its Lead Blocker to both sides on the Triple Option was a terror in and of itself. The History of Alabama Football at this time shows this. The Double Tight End I of Southern Miss was supposed to be equivalent to the Double Split End Wishbone. It wasn't. You should, however, be proud of Southern Miss during this time. They were good.

    • @rogerwilliams5366
      @rogerwilliams5366 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, Southern Miss has had a lot of good teams. During the 70’s, 80’s & early 90’s Southern Miss held their own against many SEC teams and beat Alabama, Auburn, FSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Miss State. They beat Miss State consistently and, if I’m not mistaken, Ole Miss stopped playing them.
