Review from a fan: Now now, not having your vlog would be like never having road works. They might be painful at the time but they give us hope for a better future. By the time they are finished we are all better off.
I’m not sure if that analogy is right. I just made it up and didn’t really know where it was going. Keep vlogging.

Hey mate. Just wondering if you’ve done any all out efforts on a treadmill, and if so, how they compare to your outdoor times? Context: I’ve got a treadmill that was calibrated 3 months ago, and I set it to a 1% incline for all my runs. I recently did a 5 km in 19:37 and a 1 k at I think 3:17. However, my outside running is absolute rubbish. If I try to keep my 5 k pace on a (cambered) bitumen road, it’s a struggle just to hold it for 1 km! Doable, but certainly not easy. I’ve only spoke to 1 or 2 other people about it, and experiences seem mixed. So I guess I was just wondering what your experience was since you seem to find outdoor running a lot easier than I do.
It's been brilliant watching you again over the year. You worked hard to get where you have
47 weeks seems like a pretty long time to be training for a 10k.
Haha what can I say? I’m a slow learner?
An average man can only dream of those splits 😮
Thanks mate. I appreciate it. I’ve been pretty lucky with the consistency lately
Love this
Thanks 🙌🏼
Aj I enjoy your weekly videos! Love your analysis on your running/fitness and constantly trying to improve! Trying to adopt this in my own running and fitness
Oh wow. Thank you so much for your kind words. I find that I’m getting so much out of the weekly videos too. I think it has been one of the secrets to my success this year. The constant reflection is really helping me make good decisions.
Congrats. That ending of the marathon is definitely 🔥.
Thank you! It still gives me pins and needles thinking about it. So good!
I'm an 18 year old biological female and the past two years there were 3 trans runners who happened to win every track meet can you advise.
I think that the trans debate and how we move forward to an equitable system is a more nuanced debate than I can understand and comment on. My worry is that no matter how we navigate it, there will be a lot of heartache until we get it right. Other than that, I’m unsure of your question. What advice are you seeking?
I was hoping that this event would get back up and running next year after the lack of support from QLD parks. It is a cool idea chasing a train 😃
I know it’s extremely disappointing to lose this race. I hope we get it back. Even if it is to just film another epic documentary.
Have you ever used a waist lamp for night running? I was watching a recent 100mile ultra and they were using both head lamps and waist. The waist one seems to spread the ground a lot more compared to a head spreading further ahead. You need to get the IT department to buy you a sit/stand tower for you desk. Do you think it is still a little sore from using muscles you don't usually use doing also moving the soil
No I haven’t. I have always wanted to try one but haven’t done enough trail running at night to justify it. The dual lamp on my head torch does a good job of spreading light and high beam but you can carry so much more weight on your waist that i can imagine you’d get some good brightness. Definitely need the sit stand desk. Unfortunately our it department is one guy who works 3 days a week. I can’t see it happening soon. I think I’ve narrowed it down to lifting too heavy at the gym. I’m a real light weight and I have to remember that!
Great video AJ
Thank you!
Fantastic video! I experienced exactly the same when training for a 70.3 Ironman, I couldn’t do speed work because my shins would blow up, so I just worked on bumping up my weekly mileage and would sprinkle in some harder runs with hills or sub threshold runs and it directly increased my 10k/half marathon times and it was all “easy long runs”
Thanks mate! It’s amazing how simple it can be once we diagnose what we need to focus on. That’s the key to a good coach in my book. Being able to get to the bottom of what the athlete really needs to improve their performance.
That’s awesome mate !
Thanks mate! Congratulations on your PB too! Well earned.
This is a great video! Maybe a shorter intro and it’s a TH-cam running classic.
Thanks so much!
that was great
Thank you!
Great Video
Thanks!
What if you started this video at 1:48
What are you thinking? Cut the intro altogether and just give the meat or use that phrasing as a bit of a hook?
@@runningwithaj Save the philosophy for those that have already committed to the majority of the video . Starting off with the visual is way more engaging. Also the bad mic setup hurts viewer retention. -Some guy on the internet

@fallen9535 thank you. I can see the point though. I normally run it through a noise reduction filter before publishing but forgot this time. It just takes that hiss away.

A blood test can see if you are lacking anything, low iron levels can cause low energy.
I’ve never had a blood test for low energy. I think it’s definitely worth checking out.
We have Whooping cough going through all of our schools down here. Hopefully he doesn't have that there is a lot of kids coughing down here. Have you done a sweat test to see what water and sodium replacements you need? I have been researching what I can do to help me maintain myself to achieve an ultra next year nutrition wise. I am trying to approach my runs and fitness with both pre run nutrition aswell as recovery. I definitely think it will help you feel better ❤ Your body always seems to pet you know when you are missing something or it needs assistance.
Oh man that was Term 3 for us. Between whooping cough and influenza a we had the worst attendance right across town. That’s why I took Monday off. I needed him tested. It was killing me! He’s on the mend now though. I haven’t done a sweat test yet. I still wonder about the efficacy of a sweat test considering how many different conditions we run in. You’re spot on about the body. Mine needs sleep. It’s not getting it until the end of term though so I just have to be kind. Super excited to see what you’re able to put down on the trails. Will you do the series down there?
Your videos are very good and your editing skills are excellent, but your videos are not reaching many people. The main reason for this is that your videos are not SEO optimized. I am a TH-cam video SEO expert and would like to optimize your videos. "And I would like to help move forward with monetizing your TH-cam channel." ar you interested in this?
Thanks for the kind words!

I'm also really here for the classic Simpsons drop-ins 🤣
That’s my favourite part of any video I make.
Looks like a smart bit of kit!
It’s brilliant! Best singlet I’ve run in

Oh…no…probably not
wish we had showers at my office. I live in Florida, I used to fast walk at lunch during the winter months, but I don't want to stink everyone out of my office.. LOL
Yeah I'm pretty gross when I get to work. I don't understand anyone who can run, then stay at work without showering. Having showers at work is a game changer!
Ohhhh so that’s how you do it. Interesting.
Thanks for ruining it for everybody
Really good week mate. Mindset matters. Keep going...and be kind to yourself. You're doing so well 😊
Too right! I often think of your reminder to be deliberately mindful of the positives
So interesting! I was a first timer and much slower then you, but I had the same feeling at the 32km mark as soon as we started back towards the city- I knew I’d be finishing, was like a mental reset.
Totally agree about the finish area, and I’m very very familiar with the gardens. Really weirdly spaced layout, I accidentally found the activations after I’d crossed the road to get back to circular quay.
Superbly put together and so many positives to work on and shape. Loved watching this one. Keep checking that medal to remind you what you are capable of. Awesome 🤝
Thanks mate. How did your marathon go?
Seems like the content you have published is not SEO-friendly, which is why you’re not getting enough organic visitors- I can help you grow your channel for free, interested? Talk to you soon
This probably is the most honest and most useful recap of the Sydney marathon. So helpful. I will be aiming to do my first one next year. This video deserves more views.
You're too kind. Thank you. I'm glad you found it useful. Sydney is an awesome event and if you're going to do your first, I'd recommend Sydney. Good luck!

Congrats on finishing. Same experience at the end. Got to the end of botanic gardens, didn’t see anything, went home. I’m sure they will fix/change next year. Provide your feedback to even organisers via their survey.
Thanks mate, it's good to know it wasn't just me. I didn't want to provide too much negative feedback half cocked. They did a great job of acting on feedback from 2023.
Yeah my husband finished earlier and said he was waiting for me at the Yopro stall. I couldn’t find any stalls and asked 2 groups of volunteers at information desks. None of them knew and they both asked me to ask the other desk😂 . So after the early morning long wait, running 43km then walking randomly in the wind inside the botanic garden directionless, I eventually ended up leaving botanic garden somehow without seeing any stalls, had to cross the last km road and walked long way back to Circular Quay station. My husband went home with a lot of goodie bags and the only place inside the garden I saw was the recovery zone, as if we finished the marathon in the parallel worlds.
Absolutely loved this! I ran Sydney as my first marathon (finished with a 4.03), and the breakdown of key areas in the race as well as those milestones of getting over the 35K and 40K hills were so damn relatable. Well done on your result, AJ. I’ll be signing up for Gold Coast Marathon in 2025, so hope to see you there!
Congratulations! 4:03 is a great result and a fantastic reward for your hard work. I think I really would like to run Gold Coast. I wonder if I can do both Ballarat and Gold Coast... 10 weeks between...
I had a very similar experience! I got there early and it was freezing so I decided to jog around for a bit but there was nowhere to run. I went out of the park to run on a side street but a marshal was telling people to leave and get back in the park. Pretty weird, we were all in the park with nowhere to go and nothing to do. That was strange! Then getting in the starting corral and standing for 1 hour with no toilets and no room to move was unnecessary. I really needed to pee again before I even crossed the start line (had had only 600ml of electrolyte and 500ml of water and Maurten 320). I reckon they need to fix those things next year. Also had a similar experience around 34K where my tummy felt funny and I decided to delay the intake of more gels. Definitely the right call!
Yeah I think it's a fairly minor change, just don't put people in the pens until a few minutes before start and I would definitely get there later. I think the early load up on gels is a strategy that has worked for me. Hopefully it continues to work in the future. Thanks for watching
great recap mate! I enjoyed reliving it through your commentary.
Oh fantastic. Glad you enjoyed it.
An excellent recap. You are right to be proud of your race. Well done

Oh cool! I don't think I've seen anyone else from the Caribbean watch this channel. Glad you enjoyed it.
to be honest, this is my favorite video on your channel, i loved every minute. You have all the reason to be super proud, what you accomplished. Looking back a few years your mindset has changed so much, it is just amazing, and i am truely happy for you. I remember how much you hated your first time trial marathon, and you did not want to do another one, and now look at you, you really love running and put your mind in the right place, just joy to watch your growth as a runner and as a person. Congratulations
Wow. Thank you. As someone who has been watching this stuff for years I really value your thoughts. I have worked hard on improving my mindset. I have found it easier to change outside of running, then apply that learning to my running. I still have a way to go as I would prefer to be more appreciative than critical, but I am getting better. Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for sharing your experience! :) Not only Sydney Marathon planned uphill on last km of run, Cracow Marathon (Poland 🇵🇱) did same this year 😂
Ugh hills at the end of marathons are terrible. I hope you found the video valuable.
I'd been looking forward to this one for so long. I'm absolutely buzzing for you. You really kept your head at 20k and didn't panic. You controlled things so well. The best bit for me was when you said, ' I'm feeling strong, I've got this....yes!' This vlog will inspire me to try and break 4hr 30 in my Marathon in 4 weeks time. You absolutely deserved your brilliant PB. Awesome mate.
Thanks mate! I think the constant self talk through this race was really beneficial for me. There were two moments that I was working towards: the 32k mark and the hill just before the 35k mark. Getting through those points had me holding my head high. I exorcised a lot of demons with this one. Which marathon are you doing? When does the taper start?
@@runningwithajI'm doing the Yorkshire Marathon here in the UK on 20th October.
goodonya, it was fun watching this. I ran last year but couldn't get the training in this year, I was so insanely jealous seeing the weather this year's runners got. Last year's heat was bruuutal, especially coming off a chilly winter training season. so many medical emergencies around mrs. macquarie's chair. I've got unfinished business with this race, will have to check back in the next year or two. Did you find the course improved this year?
Thanks mate! That's how I felt going into it. I was so happy to get passed the hill outside the SCG. That was where I broke last year. The course was definitely better this year. I loved it. It would still get very hot out ANZAC Pde if it's hot again. Centennial Park was much better. Just one loop around was lovely. Will you be able to have a crack in 25?
@@runningwithaj not sure, got a little one coming very soon so we'll see how the training goes in the next 12 months haha. 2026 at a minimum :)
