Great video. Arabic is also an exception: it's stressed on the first syllable /ˈær.ə.bɪk/ 😉
Wow thank you so much ❤

Oh wow! I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson. Thanks a lot sweetheart🥰😊😊😊😊
You're very welcome--thanks for watching! 🙂
Hi! Is there a rule to know the difference for pronouncing the word ending ally?
Yes, I discussed that partially in this video. The "cally" ending is pronounced as one syllable, "klee", by native speakers (omitting the vowel between the 'c' and the first 'l')--except for "vocally", "focally", and "locally." If there is any other consonant before the "ally", these word endings are pronounced with two syllables, so it will sound like /u-lee/ ("uh-lee").
@@pronunciationsnippets Thank you! This is helpful!
You bet--glad it helped!
Many thanks!

Hello and thank you for the lesson! I always pronounce strong T sound and I don't pronounce R imn the end of the word. Their or there I will pronounce without R at the end .
Hi! Yes, these are both very common for anyone who initially learned British English, as the Brits don't use a tapped T and they drop the /r/ sound when it occurs after a vowel. If you don't tap the T and you drop the /r/ at the end of contractions like this, they're going to sound kind of odd (such as "whatuh" instead of "what're" and "howuh" instead of "how're"). If this is a pattern that you don't think you can (or don't want to) correct, I would refrain from using those contractions. But if you want to sound more American, it's definitely doable--you just need to establish the correct mouth movement for those sounds and then get a lot of repetitions of the new way of moving your mouth until it becomes your new habit! 🙂
@pronunciationsnippets but I am used to British accent
@@olgayaresko4925 There's nothing wrong with that! A British accent is perfectly acceptable. My channel teaches the American accent for those who prefer it, but there are definitely different "flavors" of English out there. It all depends on what you prefer! 🙂
Hi, Lori. I think you did a fabulous job in showing us how to properly articulate "Will" contractions. Let me say that although this site is intended mostly for E. S. L. students, even native speakers should profit from this lesson. Now, I understand that English is a language that not only has word stress but also has sentence stress. Therefore I hear many native speakers pronouncing the phrase "He'll do it" as "Hill do it" and She'll be with you in a minute" as "Shill be with you in a minute", This maybe the result of "Lazy Tongue" or it may be caused by the speaker's desire to speak very fast, after all the "e" sound is considered to be a long sound. Now I don't think this practice is necessarily substandard, however I do think your students and native speakers speaking at more formal occasions, would be well advised to follow your recommendations.
Thanks for that, Ralph, and I agree with you. I think it's a combination of "lazy tongue" and speaking too fast, but I hear the same thing (and am probably guilty of doing it myself with other native speakers in fast-moving conversation). But you're right--it's not something that should be emulated! 😉
Hi Lori, Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I’ve requested this so many times, and I’m really grateful that you made a video on this topic. I truly appreciate it.❤❤ Also, if possible, could you please make a video on passive voice? I’m particularly curious about the kind of casual phrases native speakers use with it. Additionally, I’d love it if you could include examples of double past actions, like sentences using ‘should have,’ ‘would have,’ and ‘could have.’ With their pronunciation……Thank you so much in advance!
Thanks for letting me know that this one helped you! Yes, I'll put your suggestion for a new video on my list. It may take a little while, as I have some I need to make before that, but I will get to it! 🙂
I love this lesson and your lovely intonation thanks for sharing and for your time
And thank YOU for taking the time to leave a comment. I sure appreciate your support of my channel! 🙂
Wow that was a really advanced pronunciation lesson. Some of these combinations sound like tongue twisters to me. My facial mucles really hurt after this lesson. I might take some time to get the pronunciation of these combinations right. It'll take me a lot of practice, persistence and patience for sure LOL. Anyway, thank you so much for the lesson. You are amazing. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much. I enjoyed making this one because I know many of my students avoid these types of contractions and just use the long form. I want to make it doable for them (and you)! 🙂
I'd like to know if you offer one-on-one classes.
Hi! Yes I do provide 1:1 instruction. My email is lorifriend@communiclinic.com if you would like to discuss that further. I'd love to hear from you! 🙂
The V2 form of teach and think are difficult for me to differently pronounce them.
Yes, the only difference in "taught" and "thought" is the beginning sound. The word "taught" is pronounced /tot/ and the word "thought" is pronounced /thot/ (your tongue needs to start between your teeth on this one, and you must be blowing air on this /th/ sound--you can't block the airflow with any part of your tongue, or you will get /tot/).
@@pronunciationsnippets Thank you for your swift reply! You are a very dedicated teacher who truly cares about your students. Please recommend me more of your videos especially important ones for newcomers to Canada where mostly Americal English is used.
@@yalewtefera6836 Thank you so much! I really appreciate those kind words. I think any of my videos would be very appropriate for a newcomer to Canada, but since you mentioned that you struggle with "taught" vs. "thought", probably the one from about a year ago, "Help for the TH sound", would be a good next step. If you can tell me what your native language is, I would probably have more specific suggestions for you. 🙂
I enjoyed it.
Thanks for letting me know that! I hope you find my other videos helpful as well. 🙂
Oh my goodness, my five year-old has been struggling so hard with this sound and this made so much more sense to him than anything made for kids. He's pronouncing it right for the first time in his life. Thank you!!
Wow, you just made my day, Megan. Thanks for letting me know that! 🙂
Thank you so much elegant lady! It's very useful for me.
I'm very happy to hear that! Thanks for watching my video. 🙂
😂 I once experienced this awkward situation indeed.
should the tip of the toungue be touching the roof of the mouth
No, the American R is made with no part of the tongue touching the roof of the mouth.
...and mistletoe ('tis the season! - whistling "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas")
Yes! It's surprising how often those silent consonants show up!
Wow an amazing video on you tube ever !!!!!! And best teacher I’ve got ever!!!!!!❤❤
Thank you so much--and I'm very happy that you found it valuable! 🙂
Awesome Lauren. What I can affirm you american native speakers hate The Letter 'T' , but in fact it becomes easier to pronnouce. Thank very much. This helps me catchup my English? Was I correct about The word catchup that I meant to be updated. I Love English! Always surprising me.
I'm glad you found it helpful! Yes, we're all about making things easier to pronounce as Americans!😉
Could you please bring out a series of videos on '"Assimilation" in English? That's gonna be truly helpful for your students, ma'am❤.
I will put that on my list. Any particular situations of assimilation that would be most helpful?

hi
Hi! Thanks for watching my video. :-)
One of the best channels of teaching American accents!
Wow, I really appreciate that. Thank you for watching my videos! 🙂
It's difficult for me the word "only" as both are together
I agree--that's a tough combination! On the /n/ sound keep your tongue a little further back on that bony ridge, and then slide it toward your teeth for the /l/.
Super helpful
Thanks for letting me know it helped you! 🙂
@pronunciationsnippets our native languages don't allow us to roll or twist tongue in a manner native English speakers do. So it's a challenge for us. We have to unlearn to learn again . It's hard, fun all at the same time
Yes, I understand that! I have the same problem when I try to "trill" the /r/, as is heard in many other languages. We don't do that in American English, so it's very hard for me, but I can learn to move my tongue in a different way--it just takes time and consistent practice. Don't give up! 🙂
❤❤❤❤❤ Linda voz
😂 I subscribe on TH-cam after this video. Thanks a million.
Lori, when i try to pronounce the dark l , i end up making the dental lateral approximant i just cant help it
I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with this sound. If I was able to work with you in a live Zoom lesson, I think I could help you with that, but otherwise all I can do is give you the examples that I have provided in the video. This is the limitation of TH-cam videos--they can't replace live instruction. However, I will tell you that your listener will still understand you if you use a light L instead of a dark L. You may not sound like a native speaker, but you will be clearly understood.
So when pronouncing dark L, do you lightly touch back of your lower front teeth or do you touch more firmly?
Just lightly. It's simply an anchor point, to keep the tip of the tongue low in the mouth.
@@pronunciationsnippets thanks 😊
How come I never stumbled upon this video until just now.. awesome teacher 💓
Thank you so much for that! Be sure to check out my other videos on contractions--there's a playlist for that topic on my channel. 🙂

Woooaoowww it helps me a lot🎉
I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you for letting me know! 🙂
I thought you supposed to put tip of your tongue on gum ridge above front teeth?
That's also a possible placement for the light L (not the dark L, though).
Thanks a lot! I finally learned the differences between them! Love!
It makes me happy to hear that--thanks for telling me (and thanks for watching my video)! 🙂
