I think you mean "shorten a T shirt without cutting/keep the original double cover stitching"......why are you using a straight stitch on a knit?...the threads will snap/break if the fabric stretches....

Thanks, this may be the way to go for me. My dress is too short to re-use the bottom for the gusset. Luckily my very full skirt is the same fabric as the top.
