Its crazy how some of the most physically healthy dogs you can find are mutts from the shelter. Unfortunately they often come with trauma and behavioral issues, but someone with patience and training experience can give them a good long life.
You want to see a shocking transformation, look up the exotic bully. My boy is going to be 14 in march(amazing age for these guys). Since he was born they have completely changed these dogs for the worst with a typical life span of three years!!!!!!!!!! I absolutely love these dogs but I wouldn’t buy what has been bred for today.
My little mutt dog is 16 going on 17. Still smart, still runs, and no chronic health problems!
pure breeding is sick , just look at pugs , and those GSD Are a huge issue too th-cam.com/play/PLjgcFv2e36W89zPG9m6UpBoe0spoR7A2C.html&si=SbtH3r-d-PqvyqCf
Here in Canada I have 2 german shepherd with strait backs they are 7 and 8 years old working line stay away from the show line they unfortunately don't last long
I have heard that Saluki breed hasn’t changed much in centuries of breeding, and still are very athletic and have less genetically predisposed issues, could you please specify, what health issues do they have now?
It sickens me that people actively breed handicaps for their own amusement.
I have a German shepherd mix I rescued from Romania with a nice straight back. Doing some research on the net i found that Shephards from East Germany all have straight backs, its the western shephards that were bred for the curved backs and shorter hindlegs.
To me it just seems like dog shows are cruel and they should just be stopped. Purposely breeding dogs for looks and not function just baffles me. If it is not healthy for the dog, then why do it at all? Just another reason why humans suck.
In countries were dachsounds are still used for hunting they have a bit longer legs th-cam.com/video/TNbtX2MV3LQ/w-d-xo.html
I love pure-bred dogs, but what they've done with GSDs is appalling. They can't stand four square or gait without their rear-end wobbling and most wouldn't have the stamina to be a true working/herding dog. I blame the judges for putting up dogs with such abnormal structures. Then breeders flock to breed to those champions and perpetuate and exacerbate the problem. I also agree with the increasing extremes with other breeds especially those (including cats) with pushed-in faces.
Damn, those dogs look so better before
I love how Boston terriers look with a longer snout.
You cannot change this without first changing the breed standard. All of this stems from that. Function over form based on the original use of the breed should be the gold standard.
I can’t stand how monstrous the English bulldog has become. Those dogs can’t walk, breathe, digest, mate, hear, or groom, normally. It’s a Frankensteined breed and should be illegal.
Thank you
The same can be said about so many humans.
You didn't even talk about collies. They were a bright breed, but with what was done with their skull shape, collies' foreheads don't provide enough space for the frontal lobs. Personally I like mutts.
Thank you for sounding the alarm. I think breeding for looks is the worst decision ever. We have Great Danes and have only gotten them from breeder that breed for health, as a result they have lived far beyond their "expected" life span. I grew up with working Laboradors and what the AKC standard for the show ring is disgusting, a fat, inactive slob. Nothing like the dogs I grew up with.
We all know who to blame for giving the German shepherds the most hip problems-AKC. If it wasn’t for their stupid rule of the slanted back, they wouldn’t have all the issues they do.
It's all about money and greed with breeders!
No, I think we should crap on the breeders and not buy these dogs. How come they now are banning dogs races but not dogs being ruined by these idiotic practices?
You don't want to offend anyone, but the people buying and breeding deformed dogs for their appearance rather than health and function are the problem. Complaining politely will not bring changes. Those people deserve to be offended. Their practices are offensive to the dogs. If a breeders priority is making money by catering to a market that demands unhealthy dogs rather than the wellbeing and reputation of the breed, that breeder is unworthy of respect or courtesy.
Relatable
People who understand about the problems with line breeding used in the US plus hope to avoid trend breeding buy dogs from Europe or European lines
Breeders follow trends to make humans happy. I HATE the weak hind end of GSDs
I am so glad that my German Shepherd Katie has a flat back, not the sloped back.
Excellent video in bringing more awareness to dog breeding practices of the current time. It is a shame of what show breeders have done to ruin the dog breeds through over exaggeration of dog's features. I placed the blame on the dog show judges for placing these flawed dogs up as winners instead of looking for better sound structured dogs so this cycle keep continuing.
I’ve said the same with Border Collies since the mid 80’s when AKC was picking them up. I’ve had at least one ever since but would only buy from working parents. Their herding instinct will only last a generation or two if not used and the AKC ones now look like black and white only slightly lighter show Golden Retrievers.
I just had to put down my Great Dane/American Bulldog mix Jester because of cancer. He was 10 years old. I wish breeders would breed for longer, healthier lives instead of looks.
Very sorry to hear that. It never gets easier no matter how many you’ve had but while it hurts horribly to lose them I’m sure he was very thankful for the life you gave him while he was here.
My previous dog was a pure Heinz 57 breed from the shelter, winning many prices for the most unrecognizable breed. 38 lbs and lived 16 years until sadly in August he left us. He’s terribly missed by me and my other street rescued Heinz 52, 52 not 57 because you see some pit bull in her but who knows what else and because of this she hasn’t won any prices as the judges can recognize a hint of a breed. I will be looking to rescue another Heinz57 soon knowing these are healthier, living much longer lives with hardly any health issues. You guys should go to your local shelter and look for a Heinz 57 breed, they’re kind of abundant there, they’re known to have a big heart full of love that you can enjoy for many years.
SOOOO TRUE!
Pug owners are disgusting for creating a market for a dog with a deformed face.
very important video
First question, are you a breeder? Then you will understand that genetics sometimes plays cruel jokes despite all the health testing, pedigree knowledge, and genetic diversity. Before you bash breeders go get some experience breeding and then tell me how easy it is...... Being a breeder of GSD and having had worked in veterinary medicine, I can say this phenotype is not the same as genotype. You can have a dog that has a level topline which is square and it can be dysplastic as hell. Sloping toplines don't have a direct relationship to hips. There are no studies that have proved that theory. What matters the most is that the dogs which are bred are from a line of certified hips and elbows and that still doesn't not mean you can't get an occasional borderline. If screening for genetic faults could solve all the problems humans wouldn't have the health problems they have. Mammals with complex genomes are make it hard to control for the expression of every gene. There are multiple genes that contribute to a number of health problems.
Super interesting! I am 100% into mutts these days. Far healthier and it’s fun to see the mix of traits and behaviors. Abolish pure bred/inbred.
What needs to happen is people that care about it that are educating themselves to restore the breeds back to the original standard.
Awwww they looked like huskies so cute ❤❤❤❤
We SHOULD blame the breeders. Who else is there to blame? And we need to stop buying problematic breeds. Send a message with your dollars! It’s the only thing that works.
Blame the judges they are breeding what they want to pin in the ring. Like that with horses too!
Also, shorter life spans for the dogs as well.
The worst part about Chow Chow is that people on my country loves them, and what is the problem? Here we have four seasons, hot summer, less hot summer, leaf summer and flower summer But the good part, is that all the breeds that she showed are usually more natural here, i remember that my godmother used to have a cross breed dachshund and her paws were longer than 4:02 , she lived like 13 or 15 years I was even surprised about that German Sheperd, because the most deformed ones looks like this 7:17
The breeder makes decisions regarding a breeding pair based on the breed standard. The people that are making the points for breed standard for which the breeder uses are the primary culpret as are those involved in breeding for looks asthetics over function. The individuals and groups responsible for "redesign" robbing the animals that were bred for health, longevity and purpose for centuries for a FASHION that esentially compromises the animals ability to function.as a dog. Sickening
This comment will get a lot of backlash.. But in regards to GSD people need to educate themselves more. I grew up with them and had them my entire life, so did my father who is now 74. There are 2 types of GDS, the worker line and the kynologic line. The latter is often used as a show dog due to color and the flow/grace of the body. That 'lower' back is a show stand. They deliberately keep their one hind leg further back to lower their stance. It is a show position. When they walk and run normally, they don't show a back so low. Yes they do have a slighly lower back compared to the worker line, but not to the point that it should cause health issues (read further). If you do get a dog that purposely got a back so it is low it is unhealthy, reach out to your kennel. It is (within the EU) frowned upon and perhaps even forbidden to breed with it. Kennels that inforce this and don't follow the rules are not accepted. Another thing with kynologic is character, it is less active and more friendly so easier to keep as a family dog. When it comes to breeding certification, the GSD has to be ED and HD free to ensure the most healthy nest. Therefore, you don't see breeding focussed on lower backs for a long time. At least within the EU. And when it comes to longer coats, they were the anomalies in a nest that nobody used to want. Now they are more popular and about 15-20 years ago people went through all the proper channels to let them become a fully accepted GDS breed, the long coated GDS. Which is a good thing opposite from being disregarded as proper GSD. Nonetheless, you should ALWAYS check the quality and certification of several kennels before getting any dog. No matter the breed, do your research. Always want the best for your future best friend.
Ruined GSH w awful sloping backs & weak hocks!
I have 2 black working line GSDs. One is a long coat, and the other is a medium coat. I agree that many of these exaggerations have not been good for the breeds.
It is abuse especially Frenchies. At 2 years old they need a 6,000$ surgery so they can breath !!
I still don't get it. How can you breed pure bred dogs in order to change their body structures. Like how did they breed to have a slopey back.
I hate the sloping back on German Shepherd’s. They look so much better with the straight back. Why did breeders think that breeding them with a sloping back look better? It’s stupid looking.
