In this episode of the Awake in Sober podcast, Shane Laswell and his mother discuss their experiences with recovery and their faith in Christ. They also talk about the importance of finding a supportive community and the power of surrendering to God. The conversation touches on topics such as addiction, codependency, fear, and unconditional love. Through their stories, they highlight the transformative power of recovery and the importance of trusting in a higher power. In this conversation, Val shares her experience as a family member of individuals struggling with addiction and how Al-Anon has helped her in her own recovery journey. She discusses the importance of setting boundaries, not taking things personally, and focusing on her own well-being. Val emphasizes the role of faith and spirituality in her recovery and the importance of sharing her experience, strength, and hope with others. The conversation highlights the impact of addiction on families and the need for family members to work on their own individual programs.
A mainstay of our recovery stories is being completely honest with our support teams but, most importantly, honest with ourselves. How do we do that?
The answer is simple: we journal about our experiences, ideas, and goals. If you are anything like us, that means you journal A LOT and take a bunch of notes, so don't you deserve a great writing instrument?
We think you do, and so does the sponsor of the Awake and Sober Podcast Tactile Turn. If you have yet to use a Tactile Turn pen, let's be honest: are you even writing?!?

Nothing more than our mental health. I just had a conversation with a friend that moved over to a place that is mental health primary. This is what she said "I truly believe if we really start addressing mental health, we could reduce the need of residential and recidivism rates".
GREAT episode!

Knowing what to do is one thing, Doing it is another. It is really hard to let the Holy Spirit fight our battles and not try to do it all ourselves. God love ya Shane. His grace is enough for all of us. Praysing for you, thank you for praying for Cindy and me.

Love you guys
Been along this journey of Derek’s off and on since we were 14. Watching and listening to this brought back some memories. Very inspiring and I honestly couldn’t think of a better person to be a substance abuse counselor than someone with firsthand experience.
I get to do this!
Appreciate what you men are doing
