Pineheath mansion
Pineheath house was once one of three homes for Indian shipping magnate Sir Dhunjibhoy Bomanji and Lady Frainy Bomanji. At one time Pineheath House was the height of luxury with 12-bedrooms, an observation tower and garages with heating - for the cars. But it has been left to decay forover 35 years.
Sir Dhunjibhoy was knighted in 1922 for his enormous donations to the British war effort during World War One. Ever the philanthropist, he donated huge amounts of his vast wealth to charities which helped veterans and widows of the Great War.
Sir Dhunjibhoy and Lady Bomanji would spend summer at their home in Windsor, before returning to Bombay (now Mumbai), India, for six months.
The couple would then spend autumn at Pineheath House, a tradition Lady Bomanji - known affectionately as Lady Harrogate - continued until her death in 1986, 49 years after her husband's death.
The house was sold in 2013 to Harrogate businessman Jason Shaw after the death of the Bomanjis' adopted daughter Mehroo Jehangir the year before. Mr Shaw had planned to convert the 40-room house into luxury apartments.
The house overall is in decay, but the odd room remains a neat time capsule.
Here's to Sir Dhunjibhoy and Lady Bomanji for a life well lived.

    If I win the lottery I am going to try and buy this place. Surely it will eat up plenty of my winnings but seeing it renovated will bring me much joy and provide employment to many people in order to get the job done.

    According to records, the previous owner, James Nielson died in 2021. His widow wrote to Dunedin City Commission asking that the home not be designated as historic. She felt it would prevent a pending sale or any future sales from happening. She sold the home to Christa Carpenter and her husband David Wenk who went on to demolish it in February 2022! They said the home was not livable due to asbestos, structural issues and mold. Shame on them for destroying such a beautiful historic home!! And shame on the Dunedin City Commission for not saving it when they had the chance. When will the greed and destruction end?

    It's a pity that the "giant economy size" version of this mansion (Rose Terrace in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI) was torn down. Mrs. Dodge had Miramar's architect, Horace Trumbauer, build her a copy - only bigger!

    • @Napp28
      @Napp28 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The architect literally made a carbon copy eh? Just making one mansion slightly larger. Everything is identical, right down to the main staircase. Interesting side note; Today I own a guest bedroom set and a liquor cabinet from Rose Terrace II. In 1972 my great grandparents (Windsor, ON) went over to an auction of the estates contents and walked away with a GORGEOUS French bed set (Walnut wood) and a large cabinet which had wood carvings to match woodwork in the rooms paneling. Today I can only fit one bed in my guestroom but have the second one in storage.

    • @lj5801
      @lj5801 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Napp28 I've only read about Anna Dodge wanting the exterior to be the same but larger (see: Dodge Dynasty by Latham and Agresta); not sure about the interior being the same. Quite a bit of the interior design was removed and is in a home in Arizona. It was on one of those "open house" tv shows several years ago.

    • @Napp28
      @Napp28 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lj5801 thanks for the information, I'll look for that TV show of the mansion in Arizona. The interior design and layout is very similar .. just Rose Terrace is *stretched* at the corners. There is a space at the Detroit Institute of Art which is basically made of the furniture and wall paneling of the French Drawing room; this exhibit also has a jewel case that was owned by Queen Marie Antoinette which was later purchased by Mrs Dodge. The majority of the interior contents were sold at auction. Today literally the terrace balustrade and the mansion iron gates are all that remain of the house on site. Having 12 uninspirong 1970s homes built on the property. The yacht which was docked at Rose Terrace II is STILL sailing and was recently restored to its 1920s grandeur. Also, there is a tour of Rose Terrace II which was filmed before it was demolished and thus program is on youtube.

      In 1932, William H. Elkins, grandson of William L. Elkins, sold the Elstowe manor property to the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine de' Ricci. Chelten House was owned by Philadelphia cigarette manufacturer Stephen X. Stephano. After the death of his wife, Penelope, he sold Chelten House to the Dominican Sisters in 1948. The Dominican Sisters operated both buildings (known as the Dominican Retreat House) as a women's religious retreat and preserved the grounds and historical integrity of the buildings. Thousands of women and men attended retreats, days of prayer, and other spiritual programs for 75 years. Women would come to pray, meditate and find a place of refuge and reflection. At its peak, as many as 14,000 women and men came to the Dominican Retreat House in one year. The dedication of the sisters to preservation of the historic mansions on the estate was extraordinary and today, in 2013, the original features and architectural details remain intact. It was described as the most significant example of Gilded Age architecture in the region by John Gallery of the Philadelphia Preservation Alliance. Over time, the needs of people coming on retreat changed, and the economic challenges of operating the buildings became unsustainable for the Dominican Sisters. The Dominican Retreat House was at the time of its closing in 2006 the oldest retreat house for women in the United States. In February 2009, the Dominican Sisters sold the 42-acre property to the Land Conservancy of Elkins Park, PA, who intended to use the facility for group spiritual, health and wellness education retreats, and also as a venue for elegant special events. The property was reopened in September 2009 as Elkins Estate and has hosted a number of wedding receptions and events. But the conservancy could not keep up payments to the sisters who held the mortgage. In November 2010, because of numerous missed payments, including a $250,000 payment on the principal, the Dominican congregation foreclosed on the property, and the conservancy filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The property was in bankruptcy reorganization until October 2012, when the case was dismissed.[1] The congregation filed a motion to evict the conservancy in March 2012 after it defaulted on a revised settlement agreement. The agreement held that if the conservancy defaulted on its first payment of $300,000 it would vacate the premises, but the conservancy refused to leave and continued to hold events there until November 2012. The legal battle continued.[2] The Philadelphia Inquirer ran an extensive story describing the legal dispute on October 31, 2012. On January 24, 2013, the Dominican Sisters and the conservancy reached an agreement in which the conservancy would vacate the premises and relinquish control to the sisters by January 30, 2013.[3][4] The sisters regained possession of the property and sold the property to Landmark Developers in August 2019.[citation needed] From:Wiki
