Hoggy is early this evening!
Hedgehog visiting my garden.
I put dry kitten food out for any hedgehogs who visit, grain free as they can't digest that, a very high meat content kitten food plus fresh water for them to drink

    It DOES take awhile to get used to the abrupt shifts in style, but to my mind, it reminds me of a musical - where characters burst into song, or -perhaps more relevant- of an evening salon where one person might sing, another recite verses, another play an instrument, and someone tells a joke - where the content and temp shift. Perhaps organically I’ve heightened that by adding music. It’s all connected in her world, and I think it speaks to the depth of innocence even in her gothic sensibility. Thank you again for this marvelous addendum & the referral. I think a listener could indeed skip over to this at any time, spoilers and all. (I certainly read books over and over, so spoilers lack their punch.... what matters is the WAY it is told and unfolds.)

    • @ellie698

      When I read through the Introduction, I thought, oh I'm sure that people who are listening to the book would find this introduction interesting. It really helps to put it in context I think. And to acknowledge Radcliffe's reputation and how popular her books were throughout the 1800's and beyond!

  • @dahlrussell
    @dahlrussell ปีที่แล้ว

    😂 I wouldn’t expect Henry James to think much of her work. The works he compares it to are 1) written by males, 2) aimed at a different audience. For all of its shock value, Udolpho remains relatively innocent. I am SO enjoying this! Thank you so much!

    Ah interesting! I've just started reading "Stepford Wives" and how should it start but with a woman being paid a visit by a "Welcome Wagon", showering her with little household and toiletries gifts and vouchers. I wouldn't have fully grasped the significance of that had I not recently read this. The part of Future Shock that mooted the idea of "modular family units - wife and children" that stayed put while the up and coming young execs moved on to a new city is straight out of Stepford Wives isn't it. Whose idea came first i wonder. It was clearly in the futurist thinkers' air in the early 70's. Future Shock written in 1970, Stepford Wives in 1972....

  • @ellie698
    @ellie698 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This last section actually was longer than I thought so I've had to split "Beyond Bureaucracy" into two parts so the next video is the last section of chapter 7. I'm looking forward to get to future chapters that talks about the toll this increased rate of transience and change on people's wellbeing. As I was reading too, i was thinking how things have changed in the workplace and the rise of zero hours contracts and the lack of basic things like sick pay, pension plans and employee rights. People aren't even classed as employees any more with today's work practices, the needs of the company is paramount, individuals are fully interchangeable and disposable.

  • @ellie698
    @ellie698 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is recommended that you listen to one small section at a time rather than binge on it. It was written in 1970 remember when people had a longer attention span and the pace of life, whilst already speeding up, was slower than now. Listen to a bit, make notes even. Then just sit and reflect on what he said, what you've heard, before rushing headlong into the next part. There's a lot of stuff to digest here, this is not a fast food read. Let each section percolate in your brain a while before moving on to the next. Take a single bite each day. 😎 Please like and share it, it's a thought provoking book, he predicted the pace of change and the difficulties that we have in coping with it all. And it's interesting to see what he got right and wrong 😎

    Cannot help to relate this to current events in Ukraine. I am fascinated with the westernized worlds reaction to the current situation. Based on people reactions, and in sweeping terms, peopel seems not even to know the past 60 years of the history of this region, even less the past 1000 years. Being cut of from history is prolly what make the world react as it does... With this I am not taking any side, I just think it is interesting that people take such, imo, cluless and passionated stance as they do.

You, know if you take sufficient enough monkeys randomly hit on a type writer, some monkeys are prone to come up with something. • @ellie698
      @ellie698 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jomen112 Well, not all of his actual predictions have hit the mark but the psychological impact of vastly increasing change is the key thing for me. So many mental health issues, so many lonely, broken people, so many fractured relationships. It's a crisis. Too much change, inadequate coping mechanisms and the loss of long-standing social support structures all contribute to an increasing breakdown in individuals' ability to function. We're not evolved to cope with it 🙄 As a species, we think we're soooo advanced, but the more control we try to exert over the external environment, the more problems we try to solve... we just produce more internal and external chaos and create more problems for ourselves and the other living creatures we share the planet with. 🙄

Mainly, it's fiction, so the problem of voice/character, and the edition has tiny print . It was tiresome! If i tried it again, probably I would record it in quite short blocks. Depending on the storage you have, you can record quite a few before uploading, as well.

      @@HumanimalChannel I have virtually no storage lol, so for that reason, the upload speed (sl-o-o-o-o-w.... 😴) my other time commitments and several other reasons, the tiny chunk at a time is the only realistic way for me of getting this done. If there was already an audio version of this on here I wouldn't be doing it, no way (!), but since there wasn't, I thought I'd better remedy the situation 🤓

      @@HumanimalChannel The more I'm reading of this book the more I'm enjoying just "taking little bites" at it. I know what you mean about wanting to binge on things, but i honestly think this book is so rich in ideas and so thought provoking it lends itself to digesting it in little bit sized chunks and reflecting on them before moving on the next section. Looking forward to the upcoming chapter contents in really looking forward to getting to them. But in their own good time (as tempting as it is to skip ahead 😆)
