I like hearing people’s take on what this song means. From the religious to the raunchy. It’s like listening to a song in another language. You don’t know really what is being said but you recognize the beautiful word Hallelujah. For me Leonard Cohen is using the word Hallelujah in place for other words, emotions & exclamations and for the true meaning. ❤

This is so achingly, beautifully done! It’s biblical history as analogy for someone’s great, deep love-the kind when God is in the union, too. In the more complete lyrics, verses also infer a couple’s most beautifully holy feeling during sex, so strong, one feels God present in the union. & it then talks of how love can be broken over time, warped, twisted, it hints of the difficulties…. ….but the memory of that love always stays, & is what we need to hold onto for dear life, even when circumstances tear us apart.
