Cast iron is a total waste of money. Steel faced wrought iron anvils are fine, but history and condition is everything. These have had generations of use [and abuse] and are very often in a pretty poor state. Modern cast steel anvils really are the way to go, but are harder to find at a reasonable price. My main anvil had at least 40 years of daily use in a heavy engineering workshop and is still as flat as a billiard table with no significant chips or dings. Not sure what it weighs as it maxed out my scales at 200kg [450 pounds] It is cast steel but with no makers name and cost me 220 quid and a long journey. My little 1 1/4 cwt cast steel Brooks is a delight to work on and was a bargain at 180 quid. I would strongly recommend newbies in the UK to save up for a good secondhand Brooks. They still make them and cost new about £950 inc vat for the 63kg, 1 1/4cwt, but a really good secondhand one can be had for less than half that. If you are buying secondhand try and take someone with you, who knows his stuff.

On cast iron anvil put just put a mild or hard steel plate on the work face is what I did to a cast iron twist cause that's what I could a ford and it does work.

I use the g50 and it’s bang on, I like it because when you finish welding just flicking the lid up you check you work out without breathing all the crap that’s still around

I've just got this setup and love the mask. It's unreal!!! I find though that the Air PAPR unit hose stops the mask being flicked down by a nod and has to be manually pulled down with my hand?! Is this just me or is it a bit of a poor design?

Pittsburgh steel has anvils that are guaranteed to last for a thousand years. If they ever break or dent more then 3 mm in depth, regardless of how the dent or cut is made, they will replace it for free for 1,000 years. The reason the Pittsburgh steel anvils are so durable it's because they are steel anvil. Number two, some animals have a steel plate welded on top of a cast anvil. In other words they pour an anvil and then take a rectangle block of steel and weld it onto the cast anvil. On the top. The rectangle block of steel will never break and rarely dent, but the cast underneath it will crack. A Pittsburgh steel anvil is heated to almost liquefication and then it's forged by 100 ton forge. It's dropped forged, so the metal isn't just pressed while under intense heat, it is actually beaten with 100 tons in every hit. Think of it like this, take a piece of steel that's cherry red hot and have a hammer that weighs 100 tons and beat that piece of steel with a 100-ton hammer and then they just keep adding steel until they get the thickness and then it is heated multiple times again and cooled off rapidly to strengthen the steel as it's given its shape. If you have an old cheap Chinese knife that you can't keep sharp or won't hardly even sharpen, take it and heat it until it's cherry red hot and then dip it in room temperature water. Take a steel wire brush on a grinder and polish it up really good and put a clear coat on it and then sharpen the knife. It will then be like a buck knife, case knife or old timer. It won't hardly ever dull and when it does, it's very easy to get it back to a Sharp as a razor.

This video is extremely well made as it clearly points out the important factors in choosing a good anvil. The photo of the cracked cast iron anvil is an example of someone that made a poor choice.

You scared me into getting a good anvil! I now insist on purchasing an anvil which will not fracture and spray metal particles into my face!... After watching this video, I can just imagine how bizarre that would look!

Thanks for info BUT your talk about farriers anvils was a bit off mark.. The US Cavalry horseshoers anvil was basically a 124 pound blacksmith anvil I know because I served my apprenticeship on one with the last US Cavalry shoeing instructor at fort Riley Kansas..The light weight thin waisted shoers anvils started to show up in the late 60's. The popular light weight shoeing anvil out of Texas was made at around 75#s because that was the current weight limit UPS would accept and they did a landslide business selling them all over the U.S.. If you watch horse shoeing forging contests you will see only nice thick waisted blackmsith anvils being used..When I was young many shoers were cranky old farts who did not want to share knowledge..Local and national farriers organizations have helped bring good shoeing back by sharing with workshops. excellent periodicals,etc..I laud them even though I'm OLD and retired..

I do shear stud welding would this mask be beneficial for me as its a whole different type of welding is it hard to see out of the mask without the flash of the weld? Nice vid btw

Hi Josh, nice review I agree the guard should be easier to move round that’s the only thing that would put me off otherwise it’s a nice grinder. I really like dewalt grinders Bosch are good as well. I like to just go into a tool shop where you can actually pick the thing up and get a feel for it.

I know for a fact that between cast and forged anvils your audio quality sucks the most.

Hi, is there any chance you could do a video explaining the controls/settings for mig? i have the 252i that has the same controls but really struggling to work out how to manually setup the thing. i have it welding but know i dont understand it enough to really get the most/control out of it i want. there are no video that explains the the Parweld xtm controls that I can find
